On September 11, 2001, 19 members of a terrorist group called al-Qaeda who were lead by Osama bin Laden were responsible for the attacks and organised by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and Mohammed Atef. The terrorist group hijacked four U.S. airplanes and used them to strike various targets on the East Coast. The carefully planned attacks killed 2,996 people, including 19 terrorists, and more than 6,000 others were wounded, making it the worst attack on the United States in history. The September Eleven attacks effected the United States and the world through the strengthened the outlook of the United States citizens had to patriotism but also the damage done to America’s economic system as well as the change of view in specific ethnicities and religions. The immediate impacts of the September 11 were the greater focus on home life and time spent with family, higher church attendance, and especially the increased expressions of patriotism such as the flying of American flags. The poster created by Karen Simon, titled Rise Above created in November 2001 is an example of the upsurge of patriotism and the objective of bring people together after the tragedy. The poster has the composition of the American flag with solid lines of white as the Twin Towers above a red outline of New York City.
