All through history society has shown many different heroic figures that are usually more in the fictional side, such as Odysseus from the Odyssey. In this time for society there is many different types of real live people who are seen as a hero. Before it was very rare to see a women as a hero. But things have changed. For this change the expectations for them are very haugh. Society's high expectations and the need for perfection from women who inspire younger children are irrational.
Athletes are one of the people who are seen as heroes in this society so they are expected to do many things. One female athlete who is looked highly on is tennis player Serena Williams, not only is she a female athlete she is also african american which makes people look at her differently too. So according to the high expectations society has she also isn't allowed to express how she feels and or keep her feelings to herself, which is why the expectations are irrational. When Serena had lost her chance in winning the grand slam she was obviously devastated but she showed any signs of being devastated the social media calls her

A Disney star turned bad they call her. Before she was how she is now many looked up to her for being a perfect good girl, a celebrity who was expected to do nothing bad in her life but that meant to her that she couldn't really show who she was as a person. Because of the high expectations she was being held up with on being the perfect good good she felt trapped. Miley had known that “she was famous but [she] didn't know what that meant” (“How Miley Cyrus Buried Hannah Montana” 1) meaning she wasn't sure what do with what all the people we wanting her to do or the power she could have. The unreasonable expectations for women were making her into someone who wasn't really
In today’s popular culture a big topic of discussion is pop singer, Miley Cyrus. She was a former star on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana and now we have all seen her transformation from a girl to a woman. To avoid fading away like many other celebrity teen stars as they aged, Miley decided to reinvent herself as an adult musician by pushing the limits. Many people only see Miley Cyrus for her unadulterated VMA Performances and her frowned upon behavior, which most individuals don’t care to get to know. There is another side of Miley that has made a huge impact on society and has reached new levels in giving back to the community. Miley has dedicated herself to feminism, improving society’s image of women, leading the fight against LGBTQ discrimination, charity work, and using social media to expose societal issues.
Typically they do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings or apologize for their greatness. Brandi Chastain’s picture represents a little girl who fell in love with a game that as an adult turned that love into a care she enjoyed doing and joyful at the outcome. Women and girls should be able to celebrate the good things that they do because if we can’t feel good about the good things we do, nobody else can. Society will continue to have views and comments on moments should really be, but as we develop sports more and more we see that women athletes are breaking barriers to show just how tough they are. In that moment Brandi Chastain became a hero, role model, and empowered women and girls around the world who were watching. She has shown that women are strong; that they are fighters, and that they too can be
Through Miley Cyrus’s years on her hit sitcom her brand identity and start text were made. Her original star text was known a young sweet innocent teenage girl that believed in love. As Miley and her audience matured she began to revolutionize her image by creating herself a new star text that was the polar opposite of her previous. Her new star text was completely self and media driven. Now her current start text identifies with heartbreak, drugs, activism and nonconformity. The extreme change of start text shocked and dismayed individuals. Many social media users and celebrity journalist wrote the transformation of, implying it as a lost girl in her twenties making mistakes she will eventually regret. Despite the negative comments she has embraced her star text using it for free publicity and media attention. Miley Cyrus purposefully modified her star text in order to make it in the music industry, she targeted a new market and generation using her controversial change, boosting her self-success, making her one of the greatest known evolved celebrities to a mass media level.
Serena Williams’ 10 second tirade in the 2009 U.S. Open tennis tournament may have cost her the semi-final match, but what is the lasting impression on her legacy (Ford 1)? Sometimes during a sporting event, athletes let their emotions get the best of them. Their attitude is like a ticking time bomb, waiting to be set off by a bad call from the line judge, a good shot by the opponent, or a simple mistake made by the player. Many people believe athletes should be able to control their emotions and always exhibit great sportsmanship. However, the media and most spectators have never been in the same high-pressure situations as these athletes, and they should not judge without personal experience.
Serena Williams is the number one best female tennis player in the world. Thousands of little girls and boys look up to her everyday. People want to be like her, look like her, and play like her.
Firstly, Pallas Athena and Diana Prince are known for their fierceness and bravery in battle. For instance, “they interpreted Athena as a kind of problem solver” (Deacy Web). Being an inspiration is what these women have been for many years and they will continue to inspire many hearts towards the rights of a female individual. “It is meaningful for women and young girls to see a woman capable of taking care of herself and saving others.” (Wittmer Web). Watching Diana pour her heart into learning what she needs to do to dominate any battle is inspiring. Female superheroes/goddesses usually are second-string to males, but now these two female attributes represent women in the way we would want to be recognized. These women were gifted with the ability of superhuman strength which is believed to be something that isn’t normal, commonly occurring in life-and-death situations. They have demonstrated that they are female warrior figures, not just men can do it, but women can too. Pallas Athena and Wonder Woman have shown what their abilities truly are. “It is a relief to watch a woman fight back” (Lepore Web). They can do anything to defend themselves and others. Even though they had this skill they wouldn’t take advantage of it, they took no pleasure from battling. “Athena also has a great set of associations with heroes and heroines than other deity” (Deacy Web). This conveys that she connects to heroes because she was the Greek Virgin Goddess of reason; she was prepared to help anyone in desperate times. Both were blessed with abilities that opened ignorant minds
I chose to write about Serena Williams, which is one of the greatest professional tennis players. Serena eats a cup of oats with strawberry, tangerines, and almond butter toppings for breakfast. Also, she takes metabolism boosting supplements. She has a late morning snack consisting of toasted Ezekiel bread sandwich with almond butter. At lunch time, Serena eats salad containing 1 cup lettuce, 1 cup spinach, mandarin oranges, cherry tomatoes, lime juice, onions, pita croutons, and sliced almonds. She has an afternoon snack, which is occasionally grilled chicken (4 ounces), and a fat burning drink such as lemon juice, matcha green tea, and cinnamon. She eats 6 ounces of grilled Cod with a chili lime glaze sauce, a cup of brown rice with
Tennis dates back many centuries ago, and is believed to be played by ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. It has evolved over the years, and today the tennis style is tremendously different from previous centuries. Many different tennis styles have been adapted over the years, and today tennis has become a more aggressive sport. It is very different from when the players use to ding the ball back and forth across the net. Today tennis is played with a lot more force and it has become a more engaging sport from the sport it used to be just a century ago. The William Sisters, Venus and Serena Williams, have had a huge impact on the game of tennis. When they peaked to fame it changed the way everyone saw the game of tennis.
Serena Williams is the number one women’s tennis player in the world. Her outstanding skills have earned her 50 million dollars through just prizes; that is more than any other athlete in the world (“Serena Williams Fast Facts”). Her fast reflexes, amazing skills, and outgoing personality have made her known as a powerful woman and an inspiration to many young girls. This African-American woman is almost six feet tall and is made of steel. With her long, muscular legs and her quick arms, no wonder she is number one!
Throughout centuries there have been stories, or myth, told among the people of this world. A lot of those stories include women. Women are usually viewed as weak, unintelligent, and insignificant back in the late ages. There are some men who wrote myths that even hate women all together, such as Hesiod. In all of the myths there seems to be a goddess of great paramount to the myth somewhere in the story. So, even those women were looked down upon and viewed unequal to man they played a great role in the importance to the hero. That being said, women or goddess are just as important as men in each of these stories and they play important roles in each of the myths.
The difference is that now Miley has the chance to express herself without direction from others. “My whole life it was never about having control. Shit would just come out with my face on it, and that was it. So now nothing can have my face on it, my name on it, that isn’t dope -- that isn’t a part of the movement.” In an interview featured in her documentary, Miley adds a comparison between the lifestyles of other pop icons in their youth to her own. “Most people don’t have their kid photos put up and then be like, ‘She’s changed.’ Well, yeah. If you put up a picture of Lady Gaga at eight, and then Lady Gaga now, yeah, she’s changed” (Schillaci). Therefore, Miley’s new dubious movement into adulthood is not so out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, the essence of her movement embodies the revolutionary truth of self discovery, and teenagers worldwide who struggle with the fear of persecution should take note of her effortless ability to express herself.
Rankine’s essay concentrates on the idea that racism affects the perception of Serena’s excellence as the world’s best female tennis player. Toward the beginning of the essay, Rankine states “…the legendary Chris Evert, who herself has called you a ‘phenomenon that once every one hundred years comes around.’ Imagine that you’re the player John McEnroe recently described as ‘the greatest player, I think, that ever lived.” Rankine goes on to say, “Imagine that you have to contend with critiques of your body that perpetuate racist notions that black women are hyper masculine and unattractive”. These quotes, rooted toward the beginning of the essay, easily suggest the idea that Serena’s excellence cannot be discussed without the addition of the racist notions she so often encounters. This statement clearly reflects the lesson in which Serena’s father, Richard Williams, attempted to teach
Appearing naked swinging on a wrecking ball, many claimed this was inappropriate for young girls to see as their role model; but Miley seems to be trying to normalize this for women, allow them to control their sexuality, not allow men to define it. It’s consistently pointed out if star women are sexual but when male stars have naked women in their music videos it is not questioned. This double standard is furthered with the use of drugs; shortly before the release of the video, Miley smoked weed at a MTV Europe music awards in Amsterdam, which outraged people although drug use by male stars is widely
Many times throughout history, and even into today, women are often viewed as less than men. But in reality this is not at all true. Women play many great and varying parts throughout all walks of life. From the high ranked place as queen, to the loving stay at home mother, to the woman out working nine to five. Women are important to every part of history. It is very easy to see that without them there would be no world left. A class in world literature will show that women played a huge part in literature, even into today. Some of the world's most famous stories come from women like Mary Shelley's. "Frankenstein," or the many poems left to us by Emily Dickinson. We only know of these women because of the stories they left behind. The most
The English dictionary defines a hero as “a person, typically a man, who is admired for his courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” In most forms of literature from ancient times to the modern day era, the heroic character in a story has often been portrayed as a male possessing qualities such as courage, strength, and determination. In most heroic stories the female victim is typically delicate, naive, and defenseless. What she lacks in strength she makes up for in kindness. Some people would look at an athlete or a performing artist and say “oh that's my hero” but they fail to meet my definition of a hero. My definition of a hero is someone ordinary who does something extraordinary not necessarily for themselves but to help
