The true essence of a servant leader is a leader that is not self-appointed, but is birth out of a servant’s heart. It is one who serves with humility and genuine concern for others. A servant leader is willing to invest into others and love them. This attitude will illuminate Christ’s love, and others will see and experience Christ’s love through you. Others around you will naturally respect and gravitate to you as their leader. Servant leaders are those who are selfless, and are willing to sacrifice their pride and self-gain when a person is in need. Jesus had once told the disciples that if they desired to be known and great, they have to be a servant, and if they desire to be first, they must first be a slave. Jesus is not saying …show more content…
One opportunity I had to exhibit servant leadership during my time as a LETU student is my involvement in the International Student Club. Before running for the Vice President the previous academic year, and President for the current academic year, I had never realized how much others had a respect for me. I am a timid and soft-spoken student; I am one who spoke only when needed, and words were few. The international students I knew were few, but they were people I had invested and helped them when they were in need. I believe that I did not possess the qualities that the leaders of the club of previous years had. They were outgoing, people-oriented, and were well-known among the international and national student population. These qualities were the opposite of what I had. I, however, do believe that through my kindness and gentleness for others, and my willingness to help my fellow friends, was shown. As a result, I was selected for the vice president and president positions at the respective years. Although I still think that I do not possess the typical extrovert qualities, I believe that others had seen Christ’s love in me through my actions and words. I was not the best candidate for the club, but through the grace of God, he had and has placed me in the positions. A person once said to me that God equips those He has called, but rarely call those who are
Defining the term “servant leader” or “servant leadership” is a difficult task. Many have attempted to define this concept but I think the Business Dictionary does the best in capturing the essence of servant leadership. It states, “Servant leadership stresses the importance of the role a leader plays as the steward of the resources of a business or other organization, and teaches leaders to serve others while still achieving the goals set forth by the business.” The Army’s stated mission is to fight and win our Nation’s wars, by providing prompt, sustained, land dominance, across the full range of military operations and the spectrum of
A servant leader is one who leads by example. I describe myself as a servant leader because I like to be in the work with the people I lead. Leading by example has helped me be a more successful leader with a loyal following because they believe I have their best interest at heart. This type of leadership helped me to successfully move the needle of success for my high school boarding house, where I was the house prefect. When used in the workplace in recent years, I learned that to prevent burnout I had to delegate and not necessarily do everything with the team.
In Chapter 14 of Ken Blanchard’s Leading at a Higher Level, we learn that servant leaders are a part of a different type of leadership. “Servant leaders want to make a difference in the lives of their people and, in the process, impact the organization” (pg.262). Ken Blanchard also offers several different scenarios of those that can be referred to as a servant leader for example, the DMV manager mentioned on pg.263, although the examples were helpful in understanding this concept I have found that the character of Norma Rae offered the best understanding. Norma Rae was a hardworking, determined, and independent woman. She was a servant leader who put herself aside to help change other people’s life for the better.
Originating in the seminal work of Greenleaf, servant leadership is a paradoxical approach to leadership that challengers our traditional beliefs about leadership and influence. Servant leadership emphasizes that leaders should be attentive to the needs of the followers, empower them, and help them develop their full human capacities. They build strong relationships, with others, are empathic, and ethical, and lead in ways that serve the greater good of followers, organizations, and the community.
Servant Leadership is not like any other leadership; it is unique in its sense that it does not focus on one being bossy and controlling everyone around but focuses on going down and being the servant of many and an example to the rest of the people. If a leader requires people to go out and offer First-Aid to people who get injured in calamities, then the leader needs to be seen the first in providing the First-Aid services to the wounded. Servant leadership is the best and acquires more respect than any other type of leadership. The kind of
Servant leadership is the combination of treating others as you would like to be treated, searching for the best in people and giving them the opportunity to use and develop their interests and gifts, doing the right thing at every turn, consistently modeling ethical behavior, being humble and honest and not asking someone to do something you would not do yourself.
A person who is a servant leader is someone who is committed to the people. I would consider myself a servant leader due to my strong commitment to people, whether it is to coworkers, customers, management, and even people outside of the work place. This can be shown through access, communication, and support.
Servant leadership is the act of leading a follower or followers in such a way that the foremost concern of the leader is the wellbeing and growth of their follower(s), and then the accomplishment of the task at hand. Their follower(s) should eventually become self-sufficient and be able to pass their knowledge and skills on to others .
Servant-leaders must reinforce these important skills by making a deep commitment to actively listening to others. Servant-leaders seek to identify and clarify the will of a group. They seek to listen receptively to what is being and said (and not said) among others. By listening with intent, followers feel understood and valued, even under pressure, the servant leader demonstrates a sense of empathy and compassion by taking the time to understand what one's body, spirit, and mind are communicating.
The servant leader seeks to identify the goal of a group and helps them achieve the goal. They will seek to listen receptively to what is being said and do what they
Servant leadership is a type of leadership whereby the leader serves the needs of the people, empathizes with them, and involves them in solving their needs. Servant leadership is all about involving the people you are leading in your decision making, being ethical and caring for the people to enhance their personal growth at the same time improve their life. A servant leader does not simply delegate roles; he starts the work and energizes the others to join him and get the work done. According to Spears (2004), the servant leader as defined by Greenleaf is one who gets the natural feeling of wanting to serve first and then a conscious choice brings him/her to lead. This leader makes sure that other people’s highest-priority needs are take
Being a servant leader is a concept I explored in a previous class while researching Zappos.com, where they require all their managers to be servant leaders. The idea that a manager’s top priority is to assist their follower in succeeding by supporting and removing obstacles they may encounter is a noble undertaking. The two major responsibilities of leaders are people and production.
Servanthood is to serve the needs of the people in the best way possible and bring forth the greatness these individuals have to offer their community. Being a servant leader also means being selfless. Leaders are placed in certain organizations and a position to bring forth the calling and vision God has for His people. Servant leadership in it entity is to motivate and encourage individuals to turn away from self-serving. Wilkes, author of the book, Jesus on Leadership, says it the best, “A servant leader serves the mission and leads by serving those on the mission with him”
Servant leadership is basically a set of leadership practices and the philosophies regarding leadership. Surely most of us know what leadership really is. Leadership is seen simply as the accusation and exercise of power for someone who is on top of the pyramid. This is the conventional and simple form of leadership that we all know and love. Where on one hand there is the conventional form of leadership, the servant leader model is the form where the needs and concerns of others are put first. In this model, the needs and concerns of others are placed
First, servant leader, according to Wheeler (2015), is a type of leadership where the leader serves the people he/she leads. It is informed that by studying the leadership style of Jesus can also influence one to change the way he or she leads others and if also the knowledge gained is applied properly in an organizational context, it can also change the
