Service Learning Plan In the school environment, teachers may often experience different type of students that come from poor to wealthy families. As a teacher, it is important to learn and be open-minded about students’ backgrounds. In COE 202, my plan is to volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club and learn from my experience. It is important for me to volunteer because I need to experience what my future career will be like. Service learning can help one learn new things about what one’s interested in. The Boys and Girls Club is a good opportunity for me to see what it is like working with kids from low income families.
Some social problem and issues that I may encounter in this service learning is lower income children are not getting enough funding for their school; therefore, there are not enough teachers or staff to teach the kids. Classroom may be overcrowded which can lead to the lack of affection teachers have for their students. For example, teachers are too busy taking care of a big group of student that they don’t have time to pay attention to each student individually. As an elementary education major, I’m planning to volunteer at the Boys and Girls club because this club is a nonprofit club. They are

In regards to my future professional career, I can be more aware of what it is like to be a teacher. This service learning opportunity will prepared me in the future by letting me know what I need to do to in a classroom. For example, learning how to be organized, setting up goals for myself, and learning different methods of teaching is what makes a great teacher. From experiences, my teachers usually have all their lesson plans ready. In order to do this, they spend most of their summer making their lesson plans ready for the fall semester. This method can help teachers feel ready to teach and less stressed in
Serving others is a down deep way of learning more about yourself and helping others to see past themselves. Our Business and Professional Communication class participated in several service projects, which were interesting and exciting to be involved with helping others. As I am studying the major courses of Early Childhood/Special Education, our group project with the “Big Brothers Big Sister” program was very memorable to me. It was wonderful to have fun and participate in various activities with the kids. The environment was caring due to everyone helping each other accomplish different tasks. It was a great feeling to be able to share our time, talents, and hearts with the kids.
In the assigned article entitled “Why Service Learning” by Bruce W. Speck, it provides great insight as to why we need to engage in service learning. This article focused on the questions that were like the reasoning behind service learning and how does it benefit the student. One definition in the article that stood out to me was service learning being defined as a pedagogy that fosters the development of skills and knowledge needed for participation in public life. This was prevalent because it allows the student to network with others outside of the community while giving back. Service learning was created to get away from the traditional way of learning while implementing a new learning system.
Kenneth had the opportunity to serve as chair of a service-learning project and plan the project for the last several weeks. Service-learning projects provide college students with a new method of learning. Kenneth is very active in the community, but planning a project was new so his expectations were low. His expectations changed once his service-learning team put all effort and dedication into the planning process. Kenneth found that serving as the chair of a service-learning project takes analytical and communication skills, dedication, flexibility, firmness, understanding, and hard work. The group discovered that service-learning projects take a great deal of effort and team work. The project strengthened, increased, and developed the
The purpose of service learning is to teach new skills and information. It is also meant to teach responsibility and strengthen the communities. (Office of Civic Engagement & Service Learning, 2015) Service learning is a form of community service and is meant to enrich people’s lives. It helps them to have a better understanding about things going on in this world.
The service learning work I decided to do was volunteer at Cane Creek Elementary school to help with their after school programs. I ended up volunteering at this program for thirty plus hours during my fall semester. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the school and the students. In this program, I assisted other teachers with snack time, students’ homework, and recess. When I first started volunteering, I was put into the third to fourth grade class. In the beginning, I was hesitant on how to deal with the students and how everything worked during this after school program. However, after a few times of volunteering at this school, I was able to learn exactly where to go and what to do.
Service learning is like community service integrated with academic study in which students are actively learning about their society. There are more pros than cons in service learning. Service learning give students the opportunity to learn about the real world. So, these students can learn how to be a part of their community. This allows participants to develop connections with peers and adults outside their family. It helps students apply what they learn in class to real-life situations. Student service learning can help students with career and cognitive development. In addition, participants can feel that their work is meaningful to others and themselves. Moreover, service learning offer students the freedom to choose their own
I was very intrigued when I found out I was going to partake in a service learning project. I feel that when someone participates in service learning, it is a great opportunity for them to become active school. It also allows one to grow and apply what is learned. I truly feel that service learning is an exceptional opportunity for someone who is ready to take advantage of everything learned and apply it to help out in school.
Service in many ways brings us to a beautiful mind of our own, and knowledge, because service itself is a form of teaching. In other words, service teaches us valuable lessons. Lessons
Your time is important, and your time is key. Which is why I believe Rowan College At Burlington County (RCBC) should not make service learning a requirement to graduate because students won't have enough time, to volunteer. First, students could lose their jobs for calling out of work too many times to go volunteer. Also, students could start failing their other classes because they're spending too much time volunteering for service learning. Last, students will like to spend time with their families after a long week of classes, and jobs. RCBC should not consider making service learning a requirement to graduate because students will not have time to focus on it.
According to Felten and Clayton in the article Service Learning, they discuss with us how beneficial service learning is for students, staff, and community members. The effectiveness in Service learning includes the general community coming together to help serve a greater purpose. In regards to college, service learning serves as and experience to gain partnership and collaboration throughout the experience and community. For my service learning narrative, i chose to volunteer again with Ignite Church at James Monroe Elementary. From 2-4 we worked with a group of 4th graders on different activities that consisted of critical thinking, imagination, and problem-solving. The purpose of this afternoon was to connect with at least one of the students
Service learning is a way of combining learning objectives with community service to enhance their skills throughout an organization or community. However, I admired myself as I took on the position in the registration office as a student worker. Many would say filing papers, running errands, and assisting others is a basic job for a young man, but honestly, it was the one of the best experiences I have ever had. As the days traveled along, I never knew what to expect next or what I might learn. Perhaps having an adventurous mind and harmonious heart, growing out of the comfort zone was manifest. Working in the registration office was a way to accomplish great opportunities, seek learning experiences, and improve academic skills.
The service-learning project that I had the pleasure to partake in was Junior Achievement (JA). Junior Achievement is a learning/ teaching young students to prepared themselves for the real world. I had the opportunity to educate a 7th-grade class. Each Thursday morning for about 5 weeks, my partner and I went down to the school to teach different lessons. The first day we introduced ourselves and went around the room to have the students introduced themselves and tell us what they wanted to be. Each lesson had a life lesson that came along with it.
Students are often close minded when it comes to learning, but when they are forced to volunteer they learn new things that are beneficial to their future. When helping others, students learn how to think outside the box and to be innovative. Volunteering can give students the chance to explore and be creative when helping those in need. Being innovative and creative can give students the chance to excel in their academics and school events. They take problem solving to a whole new level that they would have never thought of . Community service is a useful tool to give students a chance on a second outlook on
The site that I chose for my service learning project was New Emergency Resource Agency located at 112 N 1st St, Ponca City, OK 74601. New Emergency Resource Agency (NERA) is a non-profit that receives a majority of their funding through grants. They can only afford to employ 3 full time individuals and rely heavily on volunteer participation. Their mission is “Giving people and hand up instead of a hand out” and they do this by providing a friendly serviced food bank (once every three months), financial assistance for utilities and rent, clothing, medication (antiseptic or antibiotic) and bus tickets. While there I did stocking and back stocking, I also aided patrons with their shopping by guiding them through the aisles and helping them discern
A well organized and thoughtful volunteer opportunity has proven time and time again to be a positive experience for youth. There are many studies that discuss the character building benefits of service learning. Students who participate have higher academic achievements, develop critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, planning
