The course objective for the class Service Learning in English is to increase one’s knowledge about language arts tutoring through readings, discussion, and experience working with teachers and a specific student struggling with academics as well as his/her work ethic. I was assigned to tutor Aaron Ring, a freshman at Christel House Academy South, a nationally acclaimed award-winning school. The school has a healthy and safe, welcoming environment that contains a diverse assortment of students and a 20:1 student-teacher ratio to allow teachers and students to build a close relationship. The different rooms of the school were well-ordered and well-maintained. Majority of the classrooms were clean with different lighting, colorful decorations, …show more content…
After meeting Aaron and asking him questions, he quickly answered all of my questions without hesitation. I learned that his interests are video games and working out. He is parented by a mother and a father, with high school diplomas, and a sister starting her first year at Purdue University. Aaron wants to be the second family member to go to college and major in Computer Applications. His favorite class is Algebra and his least favorite class is English. Then, I asked him to list three things he is most confident in as well as three things he struggles with. The three weaknesses he listed were creativity, not focusing for a long period of time, and reading/writing comprehension. After talking to him about his literacy skills, it came to my attention that he struggled with motivation and focus; however, Aaron informed me about different skills he needed to work on. Based on our conversation, for the three weeks of tutoring, Aaron needed to focus on English, specifically on prewriting/planning, analyzing texts, and word choice. He also said he wanted to focus on History because he had an essay to accomplish. However, we were not able to meet two of the three tutoring sessions in the last week due to Aaron’s finals. Luckily, we were able to review all of Aaron’s weaknesses with the sessions we did complete. During the last two sessions, I sat in …show more content…
I wanted to not only tutor him, but I wanted to be his mentor. Also, I wanted him to recognize the importance of school and understand the work ethic he needs to go to college to achieve his goals. After tutoring Aaron and connecting with him, I was able to get more personal with him and learn about his personal life. Luckily, we found commonalities and we built a strong relationship away from academics. Because of this interaction, I found that I had the potential to not only be an effective tutor, but I could be a potential mentor for him. Aaron needed a mentor that has been through some of the same issues he has been through. He needed a mentor that could lead him the correct way to achieve his goal of going to college. Without hesitation, I gave him my cell phone number as a source of communication during our tutoring period and after our tutoring period. Giving him my cell phone number has been very effective because he has asked questions via text messages about not only homework but college and life in general. A mentor for Aaron could be a great source for his personal life and could also drive his academics, and I saw this after each tutoring
With the tutor, well, it seems the tutor is more of a crutch.” (Tyler 191). The irony of a tutor supposedly having the most positive influence on a young adult becomes the complete opposite. Student’s comprehend the idea of learning adults can possess a negative influence which makes it important to learn not to rely or use adults
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. I enjoy working with my group to develop habits to be more successful. With each higher grade earned, test anxiety relieved, and confident smile of those that I help, I know that the work I am doing is
Last Autumn, I received a call from Amir asking me if he could develop a tutoring program for college students. Amir, having recently graduated for the University of Houston, had spent time reflecting on his college experienced and sought to aid others who were going through similar collegiate struggles. Amir quickly formed and established the Undergraduate
When asked for a student who was needing assistance, Mr. Trujillo recommended Peyton. Peyton is a third-grade student at Manzanola Elementary school. He had recently relocated to a different town, however, is continuing to attend this school. He was diagnosed with dyslexia last year in the second grade. He has an IEP put into place and works with the special education teacher to improve his learning in all areas. When I started working with Peyton he was reading at a 2.4 reading level. Mr. Trujillo was hopeful that having a tutor work with him one-on-one during class would help improve his confidence and his fluency. To improve his fluency, it was recommended that I should focus on sight words, extended time, and hands-on learning. Peyton’s greatest strength was his comprehension skills.
I have began noticing distinct mood changes in Branson Reeve. On his bad days, he results to isolating himself in his room and playing video games. On his happier days, he is social and engages with the family. Throughout this year, I have discovered that he is developed a conventional level of moral thinking. He has been extremely concerned on what is "fair" and "not fair" among specific people and incidents. During this time, I guide him in a positive direction by informing him of my morals and beliefs. At the end of the year, his final progress report arrived, which showed all "A's" and "B's". Branson Reeve's teachers recommended that he takes advanced math and science his eighth grade year. In addition, his art teacher also commented that he has a knack for creativity. He has shown to be effective at managing his time and worked well independently. He is on track and prepared to be an eighth grader. Branson Reeve and his friends had been compiling multiple plans and ideas for their summer. However, they quickly ran out of those plans and became bored. I offered several fun suggestions, but he rejected them
I would like to participate in the Immokalee Readers program to help young children reach their highest academic potential. It will help me to develop many college and career readiness skills. Being a tutor will help me to further my communication and collaboration skills; Communicating with the kids will help me to help them to meet their goals in school. The Immokalee Readers program will open up opportunities for me to start focusing on my pathway to success. I will be able to help a child develop basic study habits and homework strategies that he or she can use in higher education. By using a student’s strength to approach a strategy for their difficulties, it will help the student to feel less stressed about the subject. As a tutor I
Kyan has adjusted well to the expectations grade four and to a new teacher. He enjoys sharing the exciting things he does outside of school. Kyan is a hard worker and usually completes his work within the given time. Kyan is able to read at a beginning grade four level with good comprehension. Before reading to me he stated that he was going to read slowly so that he would be able to answer the questions accurately. He said that last year he read fast and couldn’t answer questions about what he has read. This shows that Kyan is thinking about his learning. Kyan does well on his mathematics and if he is unsure as to whether he is doing his work correctly he does a few and asks me to check. Kyan is conscientious to follow the expectations
Tutoring continues to proceed in a positive venue, and the Student A has enjoyed the sessions and is showing signs of improvement. Student A is eager to please and has been practicing at home with previously
It was important to me as a tutor that every driven individual understood the material taught in class. After several weeks of tutoring, I noticed many students struggled to complete their assignments simply because they did not have the assistance available at home. I came to a solution by connecting with them through
The experience I encountered during the service learning project was great. Throughout the weeks allocated for the service learning project, I tutored grade two and three pupils from three different schools under two agencies. The names of the agencies are Lion Catcher and MLK Community Center. This project gave me the opportunity to work with little kids for a long time. This provided me with the privilege to help and work with people who are enthusiastic about learning. Through my colleagues and me, we were able to achieve the goal of the service learning project. One of the goals is to work with minorities who needs help. This goal does not benefit our clients only but us also, it helped us organize and improve the way we think about supporting our client and managed good clinical judgment.
This year, Peer Tutoring introduced a new 1-on-1 program where a tutee is designated a specific tutor for every session to better suit the tutees’ personal needs. A student failing in areas of mathematics was assigned under my care due to the reliable attributes I possess.
I love teaching, and there will always be those who need extra help. Last year, when I accepted the task of tutoring one of my peers in Algebra II, I was excited to start, despite the looming challenges. The version of the course I took was different from the version that my classmate was taking, and so I needed to figure out her teacher’s methods and then immediately turn around and explain them to her. There was a period of trial and error, but within a few weeks, we had a system that worked smoothly. The satisfaction of watching her go into a test confident, and come back happy with her grade was well worth the many hurdles.
For my Community Service Learning placement, I am volunteering for PAAL, which is a program for children and youth with physical and intellectual impairments. Their vision is to offer individuals who otherwise may not get the chance, an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of physical activities.
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service-learning is defined as, “learning that occurs in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement” (Flecky & Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to the community members
At camp, our days started at 7 am and we were on duty until a three-hour break at 9 pm. I did not have much free time, and outside of showering and exercising, I only had an hour or two to myself. This meant that on the three nights a week I tutored him that I had no time to myself. It was not easy to give up my only opportunity to relax with my friends, but I appreciated the importance of our sessions. I understood that an hour of my free time could have a major impact on his future, and it would be selfish not to teach him. He did not grow up with the same privileges as me, and I had the opportunity to help him. I was proud to watch him accomplish his goals, and I knew that without the extra tutoring it might not have been possible. Overall, my compassionate side triumphed this summer, and when he became eligible, I knew that it was worth every
