Service Learning in College


Service learning provides college students with a whole new method of learning. This type of learning provides a student with an experience outside of the classroom in their area of concentration. Emily Knab, a college student at the University of Miami, has experienced service learning and found it very beneficial in her area of interest. Emily is studying education and wants to become a teacher in the future. She performed her service learning at an elementary school, focusing her attention on the third grade. Through the years, service programs became popular and by the late 1980’s about twenty states were in the beginning process for nationwide service programs for students. President Clinton passed the National and Community Service Trust Act in 1993. It stated that the Americorps program should offer openings for college students to serve the community as well as increase their education. Thousands of schools have now incorporated service learning in their program of study (Wade 25). Service learning has improved over the years and has a specific structure that highlights what is important about it. Service learning encompasses different components that are essential for quality education. The beginning process of a service learning project is the preparation that comes before the actual learning experience (Wade 21). This step involves careful planning and collaboration of everyone’s ideas that are to be involved in the project. The responsibilities and outcomes that the students, teachers, and community plan on getting out of the project are formulated also. Collaboration follows preparation in the progression of service learning (Wade 21). It involves the students, teachers, and community coming together and developing a program that is helpful for all (“Service Learning,” par. 1).
