Reading and writing have both been high upon my totem when it comes down to which subjects entertained me throughout public school. I've participated in the UIL Feature Writing Contest/Competition on one occasion, I did not manage to place in the event, however I received an honorable mention due to certain unexpected twists. With regard to high school projects and research papers that I've been forced to complete in my twelve years of servitude in the public schooling system I have only done less than exemplary once, this was mostly due to my tendency to be stubborn and opinionated, rather than an incapacity to turn out a pleasantly worded discourse on the topic of abortion.
To address my strengths and weaknesses, the latter of which there
William Gunnell, Jr. travelled with his parents from their home in Great Britain to Virginia sometime before his tenth birthday in 1715. In Virginia, they became indentured servants for a man named Richard Lee. Following his master’s death, William’s indenture was inherited by Richard’s son. William worked for the Lee family for six years as a clerk, running errands and keeping the books. At the age of sixteen, William’s contract ended, and he became a free man (“Indentured Servants,” n.d., para. 4). This is one of the better examples of indentured servitude in the colonies, since most servants did not live to see the end of their contracts. In the colonies, indentured servitude acted as a kind of contract-based slavery in which free people were turned into property for a term of four to seven years, on average. Their owners paid for their food, clothing, and shelter on arrival in the colonies until the servants had completed their contract, upon which they were paid “freedom dues” which could be anything from tools, land, or even guns (“Indentured Servants,” n.d., para. 1).
If exceptional grades and numerous excellence awards are to indicate anything, I have succeeded academically thus far. However, such achievements are only possible because of my work ethic and determination. I pride myself on submitting my best work, pitting myself against my past performances. I remember my tenth grade English class; I was writing essays every week. I took every critique from my teacher and considered it for the next piece. Experience I gained from that class carried over into eleventh grade, where I achieved the highest English grade I have ever made. Even now, I look back at my older essays to help me write, so I know what works and what to avoid. Perseverance through school and desire to improve have carried me well, even through activities outside of my education.
I liked how you separately related indentured servitude and surrogate motherhood under the different concepts focused on in the lecture/PowerPoint. I agree that depending on the situation and/or perspective, surrogacy could and could not be considered a form of indentured servitude. When I wrote my discussion, I focused on egoism as a hole, but I liked how you focused more on the subcategories. When I was listening to the lecture, I was a little confused about the difference between the two. I felt like the only distinction I could draw was that the wording of the definitions were slightly altered, but I didn’t really know how to apply those differences in the definitions to real life topics, such as surrogacy. I thought how
After slavery came to an end in the 1800s, the rise of a new source of labor that became known as indentured servitude began. Indentured servitude is a system of labor where people serve under a contract, to work for a certain number of years, with pay along with food and housing. As the Industrial Revolution continued to grow, the demand for cheap labor increased, and due to the abolishment of slavery, the request for a cheaper sources of labor also increased. Indentured servitude replaced slavery, behind the scenes it was technically slavery. Although it was not referred to as slavery, indentured service was a resolution to the abolishment of slavery, where employers could get workers to sign a contract and have them agree to all their conditions. Is the end of slavery caused laborers to engage in various extreme conditions, the
When one is reading a fictional story about heroic deeds done in far off places, one cannot help but compare this fantasy world to the society in which we live. This is often the case as one reads Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury in which it is amazing how accurately Bradbury described the future’s technology. Within his novel, Bradbury tells the story of a world where books are forbidden because they are not seen as desirable by their society. The remarkable similarities do not come from the plot about banned books; rather, they stem from the societal misdemeanors that occur throughout the book. Beatty’s external reaction toward his internal conflict between literature and his job is similar to the drug influenced man who began cannibalizing on the Miami Causeway. The Casey Anthony trial mirrors the child neglect displayed within the novel, and the Trayvon Martin murder case
The decline of indentured servitude and the rise of chattel slavery were caused by economic factors of the English settlers in the late 17th century. Colonists continually tried to allure laborers to the colony. The head right system was to give the indentured servant a method of becoming independent after a number of years of service. Colonists chiefly relied on Indentured Servitude, in order to facilitate their need for labor. The decreasing population combined with a need for a labor force, led colonists to believe that African slaves were the most efficient way to acquire a labor force that would satisfy their needs.
With current tuition rates at an all time high, and only continue to increase yearly, more and more students find themselves in overwhelming amounts of debt. The combination of the sky high interest rates and the inability to find a decent job make these loans near impossible to pay off. In addition, the bankruptcy laws changed so one no longer can escape from these burdensome debts. But, that’s because the banks hope these loans never get paid back. They want students’ loans to go into forbearance, as they earn more off students’ debt than the interest alone. Consequently, these students, who owe tens of thousands to even hundred of thousands of dollars, are forced into an indentured servitude in a futile attempt to pay off their debt.
My high school years were not spectacular, nor were they terribly productive.I left high school without learning how to proficiently write an essay. However, CUNY's Borough of Manhattan Community College afforded me a desperately needed second chance. It was at BMCC that I sharpened many of the skills I should have mastered in high school. I was able to greatly improve my writing ability. I began college as a student who found writing a 2 page paper to be a terrifyingly daunting task, but due to practice and numerous resources offered by CUNY, I soon was able to compose papers consisting of 10-14 pages with confidence and efficiency.
Reconstruction is a standout amongst the most turbulent and disputable periods in American history, started amid the Civil War and finished in 1877. It saw America's initially explore in interracial vote based system. Similarly as the destiny of servitude was key to the importance of the Civil War, so the disruptive legislative issues of Reconstruction turned on the status the previous slaves would accept in the rejoined country. Vital to Reconstruction was the exertion of previous slaves to inhale full significance into their recently obtained opportunity, and to guarantee their rights as natives. As opposed to latent casualties of the activities of others, African Americans were dynamic operators in molding Reconstruction.
The french revolution and mexican revolution both happen in different time eras but were both worth the cost for similar economic, political, or social reasons. The poorest of people, dealing with these charges including soaring bread payments announced it was sufficient and began to force a resolution upon the dictator. The Mexicans would become fighters while the French laborers would arrange an organization to progress upon the dictator's expenses. These laborers remained battling not just for themselves but towards everyone that was terrified to use their voice because they were traumatized by the consequences that could result. These laborers didn't comprehend what was going to occur as an outcome of the revolution, but they understood
Nathaniel Hawthorne's work is unique. His writings are full of subtle imagination, analysis, and poetic wording. His short stories are known for their originality and for their ability to provoke the reader's thoughts. Although a large portion of his stories are allegories, Hawthorne's preference is to draw more heavily on symbolism (Pennell 13). His use of symbols adds depth to his stories and helps to reveal different aspects of his characters. In Rappaccini's Daughter, Hawthorne uses symbolism to create a modern day tale of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
In college, my writing was focused on history and biology. In history, we analyzed books and connected them with today’s issues while in another essay we would describe the effect of an important event. In biology, we wrote a lab report with each group member being focused in writing a different part of said lab report. My parts included analyzing the data and researching the experiment while making connections to the rest of the paper as well as to some issues that were being discussed on the campus. Albeit, high school is nothing compared to college, the amount of writing that was put in may have killed off a thousand trees or so. I had to write an extensive research paper about a globe issue, a few biology lab reports, and a rather amusing amount of analysis and comparison papers in English. I cannot make the connection with 1308 due to the fact I obtained hours from outside college and this would be my first English
Living in the academy, I never have to plan anything ahead, the schedule always neatly filled with classes, sports, gym, parade-practices, arms and flight. Keeping up with the schedule already exhausted my physical condition, I found myself crack up with homework. Writing was found in every class, so I became a Hershey fan; eating chocolate to keep myself awake to write papers. English, History, Government, Science had different types of requirements and critical thinking; those papers usually came along presentation assignments. While the papers were hard, nuts assignments, it tended to come out smoothly with presentations. As I engaged in deep research for my papers, I was greatly improved in knowledge which proved from the demonstration of my presentations. In fact, I still remembered the faces of my classmates such as wide-eye and jack-jawed in surprises or roguish or straight-faced as they found some wrong; there also embarrassed moments from of those who just literally laughed right to my statements. Because primary source was recommended but it was not required, students like me usually come across with some awkward moments from consulting debates which swallowed up presentation time. To that end, writing in high school greatly involved and improved my academic which resolved also in my social interacting with friends and teachers.
I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book reports, and any other required assignment. I am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that people tend to misunderstand my point if it is written.
During my English courses throughout high school, I learned many things from writing simple journals, research papers, and a single term paper. During high school, I was laid back and procrastinated for much of my work. During the latter part of high school when I wrote my term paper my senior year, I found out that working a little every night writing a few paragraphs helped me out greatly. I was not just throwing something together just to get the grade and the paper finished. I spent time on the paper and
