I’ve never wanted anything as bad as I wanted this. I’ve never put this much effort into anything as I did this. I prepared myself for this one event that would be a big milestone for me. Seventh grade volleyball tryouts. Volleyball was a family sport and my first love. I wasn’t obsessed over the Jonas brothers or Hannah Montana; I was madly in love with the game of volleyball. How it had a physical strain as well as a mental strain. Volleyball isn’t thought of as a mental game, but there’s a lot of thought that goes into it. The footwork that, if not done properly, could throw off your whole performance in a set and cost the team valuable points. Constantly watching over your teammates and learning how they play as well as keeping up with what you're …show more content…
I also benefitted from the coach knowing me. She wouldn’t cut me from the team. There was no doubt in my mind that my seventh grade year was going to be the best and I was going to make the team. The school day had finally ended, and the loud siren indicating the end the class had gone off temporarily deafening everyone in the building. I was super anxious walking down the hall to the gym. I asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom and change so I wouldn’t waste time changing in the locker room. When I had finally reached the gym I sat in the bleachers and tossed my bag behind me. I closed my eyes and smelled the stench of the newly polished floor. I imagined being out on the floor and a crowd of people behind me chanting my name. I was abruptly pulled out of my daydream by my name being called by the coach. She asked me to help set up the net and get the equipment. I was an expert at setting up the net. I did it with ease as the others watched in awe. As I was setting up coach talked to the girls I guess she figured I had heard it before, so I didn’t really have to sit and listen to it
In high school, I was involved in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Throughout my whole venture, I had this one coach who followed me through every sport. Her name was Coach Lolly Arevalo. She was five feet tall, dark skinned, big green eyes, and a little muscular body, she had a masculine voice that terrified all the athletes every time she scolded us. “Do not stop till I blow this whistle,” those words motivated each and every one of us not to stop. The very first game I had my freshmen year in volleyball was a big, extraordinary moment in my life. When we walked into the gym that night to warm up before the other team arrived, butterflies began to flourish in my stomach as the excitement began to kick in. The bleachers were filled with people wearing red and white shirts, friends holding fan signs with your name, and family members who wanted to see you play the game you love. The excitement I was developing become even more known when the other team arrived. The girls looked as though they wanted to smash your face
One of my biggest fears as a Freshman in college is gaining the Freshman fifteen. So I decided to be proactive and join the volleyball team. Volleyball is a sport that I relish and I find myself to be rather superior at. Earlier last week, I set up an appointment with Coach Dawn to examine my volleyball skills, therefore I could get a spot on the team.
A timeless sport filled with -- rapid movements, sweat, anxiety, and team cheering -- volleyball is a sport that many underestimate. There are countless people that say “Volleyball is a girl sport” or “volleyball is not even that hard”. Also you may come across an egotistical varsity football team that refuse to attend any volleyball games, because they are mad that varsity volleyball made it to state championships and they did not. However, volleyball is a sport that requires intense drills, training, and a strong team bond. For instance if you do not dive right when hitting the floor you can seriously injure yourself. I have had torn a ligament in my shoulder diving for the ball, because as a volleyball player you are taught to always chase after a ball even if it means running into a wall. But the best and the greatest experience of all time is when it is a game day, or even better yet the last game that can determine your title in Norcal Championships. Norcal Championship finals is the game that all 14 teams strive for during the
When first learning the different technical aspects of volleyball, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. During my first practice, I had no idea what it meant to be athletic until I realized the necessity of hustling and focusing
I started the first few weeks wanting to impress the head coach to prove to him I deserved a spot within the starting nine on the varsity level. I practiced hard, never goofed off, and went to the cages with my dad on the weekends. I wanted to make the varsity level to show my family and myself that I could do it and that I was good enough to compete at the varsity high school softball level. When I was younger, I made the team I wanted, I never considered failing to be part of me. The big week came, the teams were posted all seven freshmen had made a team but yet to find which side of the paper their name
As I started my senior year of highschool, I was approached by my head basketball coach. He approached me to tell me that he wanted me to help coach middle school basketball. At first I was a little skeptical because I already was incredibly busy. Because I did not want to disappoint my coach, I decided that I was going to go ahead and do it. I missed the first four days of practice because I had cross country practice after school. On a Friday, I was able to go to a practice. We went over our plays and scrimmaged each other. I was a little flustered because I had no idea the name of most of the kids. Practice ended and the head coach told me that I was coaching the B team on my own the next day. I was surprised to hear him say that. I couldn’t believe that I was going to be coaching a whole team on my
I was doing everything I could to make Rock Ridge’s volleyball team. I was working out almost every day, I went to every volleyball open gym, and I went to many clinics and camps. Making this team was very important to me, and I didn’t know what I would do if I didn’t. I’ve been working very hard to get a spot on the team. However, nothing could mentally prepare me for the three-day long try-out process.
The Gobles J.V. Volleyball Team played strong against Fennville @home on Tuesday, September 26. Christiana Hunt lead the team with 4 assists. Karlee Henderson got an outstanding 5 hits along with Libbee Nason who got 4. The team had a total of four amazing blocks. The team pushed their hardest till the very end and left with another
I had such a passion for the sport and had never stopped loving it. Even though it took a lot of work to get back into shape and a lot of work to get back the techniques, I was happy to push myself. I decided to try out for the team at my community college sophomore year. I was genuinely terrified but I reminded myself that this type of opportunity was one that I could not take for granted. I made the team, but that was only half the battle. I wanted to be better than I was before. I wanted to prove that I could make a comeback and I needed to do it for myself. There were so many practices I felt like giving up and tried to justify it by the fact I had missed so many years and it was hopeless. The season had its ups and downs, but I had never been so proud of myself. I played great and I gave it my all. I learned a lot about myself as I played the game and also off the court with my teammates. I played college volleyball after three years of not being able to be on the court. I learned that I was resilient and there was nothing that I could not do as long as I worked for
The Lady Eagle volleyball team took a road trip to Holcomb last Thursday in order to compete against the Lady Longhorns and the Hugoton Eagles. Colby was victorious against Holcomb, but fell to Hugoton after a tough three set battle.
I have been playing volleyball for as long as I can remember. From playing in club volleyball tournaments in the spring to bumping the volleyball around in my living room, I spend most of time playing or practicing for a sport. Most people believe that the only reason kids play sports is because they have athletic skill. I believe that playing a sport is more than just becoming the best player physically, but becoming the best player that your team needs you to be.
When I got to the gym, a hum of optimism was in the air, and even though half of us felt like collapsing in exhaustion, I could tell by the sparkle in our eyes that we were as ready as a firing rocket. I had realized that joining the GCA Volleyball team was so smart, a true genius couldn’t deny it. With juggling school, church, AND volleyball, I could be more responsible, and ready for college, as well as a job. I could learn to space and manage my time wisely which I know is something I would have to do very soon. And stress, luckily, wasn’t much of a problem with volleyball, so I didn’t feel like tearing out my hair at any point. There are no regrets in my heart for joining the team, making new friends, and becoming better at
“Seven” that is the amount of times the Penn State Women’s Volleyball team has won the Division One Championship. They are currently tied with Stanford Volleyball for the most National Championship titles as of this year. Penn State has strived hard in order to claim their title of the most wins, but there are three things that have helped them along the way: looking at how far they’ve come, the team’s coaching, and previous alumni that have pushed current players to keep a positive reputation.
I started to see improvement, and my coach must have noticed as well, because he invited me to come to the varsity tournament that weekend. I was excited for the opportunity to prove myself, but after sitting for the first two games, I worried that I wasn’t going to get my chance. When I saw that I wasn’t starting in the third and final game, I gave up nearly all hope that I would get to play. I was starting to wonder if all my hard work was even worth it, when, all of a sudden, my coach told me to get ready to go in. As I entered the game, I felt a little nervous, but I knew I was prepared. This was the opportunity I had been waiting
Six out of the last eight College Volleyball Championships have been won by Penn State volleyball. In those years they have lost a total of twenty-two games. In 2013-2014 there were just five losses (D1 Women’s Volleyball). Not only are they reigning champions, but they are a historically consistent team. Having Micha Hancock, an ESPY nominee for the Best Female Collegiate Athlete two years running, as their setter, was a big part of their success over the last couple years (The Daily Collegian). Coach Russ Rose also has high expectations for this coming season. Penn State Women currently have the most consistent, successful program in college volleyball.
