Sex Communication In Marriages

After completing my reading research, I would like to understand why long term committed couples still seem to have difficulty communicating about sex and in what ways can a couple increase their sexual activities after there has been a decline in sexual activity.
Sex is an essential part in a relationship for happiness and relational satisfaction. In the beginning of a relationship, sex happens frequently but as the relationship progresses, sexual activity tends to decline (Call, Sprecher, &Schwartz, 1995). Work, family, and other daily activities get in the way and sex gets put off for another day. Expressing issues or concerns unrelated to sex are easier, but communicating the needs, wants, and desires related to sex can be a bit challenging. In a marriage, relational maintenance is needed in an effort to stay together. Without constant awareness of where the relationship stands, it could deteriorate resulting in the termination of a marriage. Sex in a marriage is very important and couples need to make the effort to preserve it for the to stay happy and content.
Sexual intimacy declines over time as the marriage continues. Sex frequency begins to decrease as early as the first year of marriage and continues to decline slowly over the years (Call, Sprecher, &Schwartz).
