When you hear about human trafficking, most people do not think about it going on their own backyard. At the same time, there is the occasional news story about prostitution, in one way or another. Although the deeper problems underlying the two topics are rarely spoken about in a public forum, the relationship between the two are incredibly important in the protection of trafficking victims and the preservation of rights of legitimate sex workers. The sex workers’ rights movement is important in understanding the position sex workers have as workers and members of a community tainted by illegal trafficking. Human sex trafficking is the movement of people, by force, into the sex trade, or other forced labor. Yes, sex workers should have their profession considered as a legitimate sector. Yes, human sex trafficking should be stopped. While both of those things are true it is important to consider all aspects of both to form a movement directed at the two, rather than focus on strictly one or the other. A movement that is geared towards creating an even ground between the rights of individuals to use their sexuality to make an honest living, and the protection of individuals from the exploitation of that very same sexuality, is pivotal in the continuation of protecting human rights across the globe. By examining how several, very different, countries deal with sex work and human trafficking, we can attempt to understand how we can move forward with a new more complex
