US Armed Forces is historically an organization lead by men, for men. It is comprised of about 14.5 % female and 85.5% male according to a 2011poll (CNN U.S, Jan 2014). In an organization with a rich history and legacy of obedience and restraint, it is hard to imagine the secret society of “The good ol boys”. It has been acceptable for men to “work hard, play hard”. We have all seen the movies where the men come back from overseas, invade the bars, have a good time, take a girl home, and it is acceptable behavior. What happens after they leave the bar? What happens when she says no? In November of 2013, there were 3,553 reported sexual assault cases (ABC News, 2013). The Military is very diverse. Gender, race, and sexual …show more content…
Paula Coughlin is an attractive female Naval Aviator and in 1992 there were only a hand full of female aviators, remember the first female aviators to join the navy were in 1974 and to date female aviators consist of 13%. This was, and still is, a male dominant work force. The problem has surfaced repeatedly as an organizational issue. More recently in 2012, news broke out about Sexual Assault scandal at Lackland Air Force Base basic training center. Just last year the director of the Air Force’s sexual assault and prevention program was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault (Winerp, 2013). Sexual assault is a counterproductive work behavior, it takes members out of the work centers so that they can attend PowerPoint-based training on how to avoid sexual assault or how to be a Wingman. This is what the Air Force considers buddy-up or collaborating mechanism to increase personal accountability and vigilance. The Wingman concept is used to ensure that you watch your friends closely when you go out to bars or parties. More importantly however, it is counterproductive for the victim for both professional and personal reasons. Uniform Code of Military Justice (USMJ) is what the military uses to prosecute and court-martial its members. Yet in the UCMJ, Commanders have the authority to overturn a guilty verdict in the case
For years women have been trying to gain gender equality throughout the working world, along with in the military. Since the beginning of a uniformed military, women could not serve in military occupational specialty (MOS) positions that put them in direct combat roles. Although many women have contributed in significant ways, they have not been authorized to serve in MOS such as infantry, artillery, or armor. As the war on terrorism has developed since 9/11, women have slowly worked their way farther into the military and its many roles. This resulted in women being placed into direct combat roles. Though women have been allowed into many different roles, there is still one battle that they have yet to win and this time the majority is not backing them. Women are trying to gain access to United States Special Operations units in every branch of the military and the majority of these operators are not happy about it. While some people believe women deserve equality and the chance to do what men can do in the military, that is why women should not be
In more than just the examples given in the documentary, reporting a sexual assault seems almost baffling in terms of procedure, both in military life and in civilian. It is a difficult enough prosses for a man or women to endure in civilian life. Just noting what I have witnessed in my time here at Georgia Southern University, it is a long, horrifying, and complex means to achieve justice, and even then, it is certainly not guaranteed. Even at the conclusion of this class, it is still difficult to grasp the blatant disregard for an entire section of the armed forces. The ones who are willing to make the huge personal sacrifices to serve their own country, when that same courtesy would never be reciprocated. As stated multiple times in The
Assault in all forms is dangerous to both men and women. Sexual assault on college campuses is fairly common today, and occurs in a number of ways. Young women are most often the main victims of assault on college campuses. This is becoming a serious issue in American society today because either some of these cases go unreported or these young women are too scared to report them or are too embarrassed to report it because the men causing these might be their friends or someone they know. Many young women face this kind of problem, especially when in college. It is mostly at college parties where girls are at risk of having drinks that have been “roofied.” Roofied drinks are drinks that have been spiked with drugs and are most often used by men against women to make them sleepy or cause them to black out. These men are able to take advantage of these vulnerable women. It is difficult to tell if a drink is roofied as the color, taste and odor of the drink remains the same. These actions also put out a bad image of the “good” men and the men that actually care about a women’s safety and wellbeing. As a result, women will naturally form opinions based on experiences they have and will tend to be more cautious.
Sexual assault is an ongoing problem in the U.S military. But there is a large number of soldiers who will admit that during their time in the service they have been sexually assaulted but did not report. Any unwanted sexual contact should be reported; these soldiers should receive justice without being afraid of what might happen to them and their career. Not reporting sexual assaults is putting others in danger of being a victim, and is encouraging these assailants that their actions is acceptable and it’s not.
Even though women have made tremendous advances throughout the years in the military the demeaning terminology still remains. In the early decades of women being allowed into the United States
Sexual Assault described in technical terms is defined as any sort of sexual activity between two or more people in which one of the people involved is involved against his or her will. (3) The description of "against his or her will" extends to varying degrees of aggression, ranging from indirect pressure to a direct physical attack. While sexual assaults are associated with the crime of rape, it may cover assaults which would not be considered rape. What constitutes a sexual assault is determined by the laws of the jurisdiction where the assault takes place, which vary considerably, and are influenced by local social and cultural attitudes. Every year, an estimated 300,000 women are raped and 3.7 million are confronted with unwanted
According to the National Defense Research Institute, policies and programs should be improved to increase reporting of the full range of sexual assaults, including those not perceived as sexual acts. They should expand sexual harassment and gender discrimination monitoring, prevention, and accountability practices and equip commanders with data and guidance to take effective actions. Prevention and enforcement efforts should target bullying, hazing, and other demeaning behaviors. The factors contributing to risk and prevention of sexual assault and sexual harassment should be identified. Lastly, current sexual assault training that service members receive should be assessed (Morral, Gore & Schell, 2014). There needs
One of the most complex issue is the assessment of sexual assault in the military and how to provide proper medical, psychological treatment, proper reporting procedures and fair justice. Lisa Schneck (2014) a law student at George Washington University Law School, she discover survey conducted on more than 1,100 women severing in Afghanistan and Iraq. She reported that shockingly 92 percent of reported assaults never come before a military court because first responders frequently fail to collect forensic evidence of an assault within the 72-hour deadline stipulated by current guidelines, and more often than not, the victim’s superior decides against proceeding to court-martial anyway (p. 581). The Army treats all victims of
According to The United States Department of Justice, Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities such as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape. (Department of Justice) 90 percent of the victims of sexual assault are women and 10 percent are men, and nearly 99 percent of offenders in single-victim assaults are men (Bureau of Justice Statistics 2010). Sexual Assault can happen to anyone, not just women. Sexual Assault these days are a big trouble and it is not being addressed in good order, and it is especially a big problem at the University of Kentucky campus. Although, many people think sexual assault on campus is not a huge issue, it really is and it is not properly spoken of. Even though people have different opinions on sexual assault, sexual assault is a big issue on campus and alcohol is largely to blame.
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the issue of rape and sexual assault in the military. The number of attacks for rape and sexual assault in the military are at an all-time high. Women have recently been allowed to fight on the front line. While this may be a huge achievement for women-kind, for this woman, it is a very scary thought. I am a junior at Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences; a school geared towards students wishing to enter the medical field. I may be forced to join the military one day if a war breaks out and women are needed to protect the country. I would be happy to serve my country if I did not have to be scared of my fellow soldiers. Rape and sexual assault are major issues in the military and
A reporter named Bob Unruh for the WorldNetDaily had wrote about Elaine Donnelly report of the Sexual Assault in the Military. Elaine Donnelly had noted that sexual misbehaviors in the military are rising, large number of rape towards men mostly and other sexual assaults. President Clinton started the DADT (Dont Ask, Dont Tell) in December 2010. In Donnelly’s view the Military is falling, she wants to get rid of the gender-integrated basic training because she in her conclusion she drawn a increase disciplinary issue. She had a organization that is meant to help solve the problem. Endangering Military Strength, there is at least three sexual assaults everyday, having basic training also need to be separated for genders. On the homosecuality
In 2013, nearly 28,700 military members that were sexually assaulted (Cernak). Sexual assault is one of the largest issues in the United States military and it is being handled very poorly. All of the military’s time and money that is being put towards sexual assault is being used for repetitive training that is obviously not working due to the fact the numbers of sexual assaults going the wrong direction every year. Due to this training, victims know the options available to them but, they are not reporting them. Training to educate a predator that sexual assault is not going to reach the issue at its core. Everyone knows that sexual assault is horrible and repetitive scolding is not going to fix the issue. The military needs to understand the significant amount of sexual assaults and also stop putting all their effort in training about sexual assault by taking actions to prevent it such as reestablishing the role of leadership positions. People are often unsure of what sexual assault actually is. Sexual assault occurs anytime that there is not consent given for a sexual action. Dickerson gives the Deportment of Defense’s definition of sexual assault as:
The United States military continues to be one of the most powerful forces in the world. Although the characteristics of the United States military has changed throughout the course of time. Traditionally the military was dominated by men until women were given the opportunity to serve their country. However, there is an ongoing problem with sexual assault against women in the United States military. Sexual assault in the military has skyrocketed throughout the years and many of these cases are never reported.
Sexual assault in the military has been an ongoing problem for centuries. In the United States Armed Forces sexual assault is a crime that has just recently drawn a great deal of public attention and has placed pressure on the government to put a stop to the abuse. The department of defense under pressure and supervision from the government is going to great measures to address this ongoing problem. Although measures are in place to educate, protect the victims, and punish the offenders, the problem still exists and there has been little improvement to show the measures are working. It could be argued that repealing the don’t ask don’t tell policy has contributed significantly the sexual assault problem in the military.
It usually focuses about the woman who are enlisted but the majority of assaults are men. In this case there is more men on men attacks but women are more likely to be assaulted. But in conclusion reports say many attacks on men go unreported. This behavior has risen because this violence usually goes tolerated within the system. Veterans later come out about such things because the fear of being punished, hazed, and penalized for reports against higher officials. It is hard for civilians to make statements about how to prevent sexual abuse in a strict and strong national organization but we can still stand to be heard and make movement to help those sacrificing their lives helping
