Sexual Decency In The Ninetieth Century

Who you go to sleep next to is your sexual orientation and who you go to sleep as is your gender identity, which are both distinct today from your marital status; this however, was not always true, for much of history society conflated gender, sexuality and marriage. As society evolved the predominate ideas concerning a person's sexuality, their gender, and the social importance of marriage transformed. To illustrate the changes to the structure of marriage this paper will examine the changes of sexual decency in the late eighteenth century, the culture of respectability in the ninetieth century, post-war America in the mid-twentieth century, and the sexual revolution in the late twentieth century. The changes in sexual decency, for men and women, in the late eighteenth century most accurately explain marriage during this time period. For elites during this time, marriage was the defining factor of what made sexuality acceptable, because sexuality for reproductive purposes was "universally good"(Kushner, 9/4/15). However, sex activity outside this framework was frowned upon and regulated heavily by society (Kushner, 9/4/15). For common people, marriage was less concerned with sexuality and more with daily economic and social survival (Kushner, 9/4/15). Towards the end of the century the demographic shift, which responded to the increase in birth rates, highlighted that sexuality gained social acceptance outside of marriage (Kushner, 9/4/15).
