Every 98 seconds an American is raped (Rainn, 2015). When my grandmother was 20 years old, she was that American. Those 98 seconds felt like an eternity. Let us go back 46 years ago to a time where the Me Too movement had not even been whispered between the confines of the human brain. My grandmother had come home from college during winter break to visit and spend time with friends and family. Her best friend’s brother had asked her to go on a date and of course she was happy to go because she knew him so well! This definition is very important to know because of the many different forms and scenarios that people think are sexual assault. So many people label actions as sexual assault when they are not or there are times when actions should be described as sexual assault when they are not. The amount of women that have experienced the basic definition of sexual assault are in the millions. The American woman has double the chance to get sexually assaulted than getting breast cancer. These are two of just a few statistics that are only just the surface because 54 percent of sexual assaults are not reported (Chemaly, 2012). So many people in the world think only some are sexually assaulted when in fact, that is not the case. Like women, men are usually silent about their cases. Most men do not want to be vulnerable and realize that they were out of control long enough to be assaulted. Stated earlier in my paper, 54 percent of cases are not reported and that includes men (Chemaly, 2012). There are many cases, that seem to occur more with men, where they are awoken by a friend who is trying to stop the whole situation. The stories that were captured on Mirror, were all from men who had been taken advantage of when they were drunk; this sounds a lot like the stories we hear about women.
