Immunotherapeutic Strategies
Sexually transmitted diseases are caused by a wide range of viruses. The most common viruses are: HIV-1, HSV-1/2, and HPV. Often the contraction of these viruses goes undiagnosed until the patient has acquired severe symptoms, by this time they have also transferred the disease to another individual. For this reason, the importance of developing and understanding immunotherapeutic strategies has become essential for immunologists (5). There are many factors that contribute to viral infection, therefore, targeting these virus specific factors is a key to preventing viral spread to neighboring cells. Factors like viral attachment, entry, un-coating, synthesis, assembly, and

Cytokine therapy has been a crucial advance in the treatment of HIV because this disease is highly affiliated with cytokine production. Cytokines are inserted in tumor cells as immune stimulatory genes (5). Following insertion, the patient is injected with a cytokine based vaccine which is used as a therapeutic measure for cancer prevention in patients that have HPV. Activation of cytokines (IL-2, IL-12, GM-CSF) have been theorized to inhibit the growth on tumors. HIV is linked to a decline of the host’s immune system response and decrease of CD4 T cells, therefore cytokine therapy enables the production of these cells by treating patients with IL-2 (5). HPV has been associated with cancer and there is no cure for HPV, however, there are preventative and therapeutic medications (2,6). In the case of HPV vaccination, natural killer cells are activated which induce an immune response. Immune modulators have suppressive and stimulatory effects on macrophages. Stimulation allows for the secretion of cytokines which allows the immune system to produce antibodies due to the high antigen presentation in dendritic cells.
Although these viruses often remain undetected, HSV typically causes a more visible and painful reaction in the infected tissues. Shedding of the HSV virus is prominent when the symptoms occur (1). HSV-2 in responsible for genital herpes and may be one of the most
Herpes is one of the common of more than 30 different sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) in America today. Herpes is an infection that is caused by one of two closely related viruses, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both of which are very easily caught, have similar symptoms, and can occur on different parts of the body. Even though it is most common to see the virus HSV-1 appear as oral herpes and to see the virus HSV-2 appear as genital herpes.
b. HIV is an incurable disease that relies on coreceptors to initiate host cell interaction and proliferates by utilizing the host cell’s own machinery to reproduce new virus. We will more deeply explore the mechanism in which HIV virions infiltrate and deceive our host cell. In addition, we will discuss current treatment and research that are in the process of finding a highly coveted cure.
It is reported that the herpes virus is more easily transmitted from male to female than from female to male. It is reported that approximately one out of every five women between the ages of 14 to 49 years of age have the herpes virus and one out of nine men between the ages of 14 and 49 years of age have the herpes virus. The majority of individuals infected with NSV-1 or HSV-2 experience few if any symptoms or their symptoms are so mild that they do not even notice them or mistakenly believe that they can be attributed to another skin problem. When symptoms are noted it is in the form of blisters that are painful around the individual's "genitals, rectum or mouth." (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012, p.1) The blisters break and leave painful sores that may take two to four weeks to heal.
Human herpes virus 8 (HHV8) was recently discovered in the tumours called Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS). These tumours are found in people with AIDS and are otherwise very rare. KS forms purplish tumours in the skin and other tissues of some people with AIDS. It is very difficult to treat with medication. HHV8 may also cause other cancers, including certain lymphomas (lymph node cancers) associated with AIDS. The fact that these cancers are caused by a virus may explain why they tend to occur in people with AIDS when their immune systems begin to fail. The discovery also provides new hope that specific treatments for these tumours will be developed that target the
HSV type 2 is usually the cause of genital herpes, but it also can infect the mouth. Genital herpes affects the genitals, buttocks or anal area. The virus can be unsafe in newborn babies or in individuals with weak immune systems.
Genital herpes is ne of the most a sexually transmitted infection that can cause lesions or sores around the genital area. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the most common infectious diseases in the United States today. (STDs), was also known as Venereal Diseases (VD) named after “Venus, the Roman goodness of love” (Sutton, p. 15). (STDs) are infections that can be spread from one person to another through sexual contact. It is essential to note that sexual contact involves more than vaginal or anal intercourse. Sexual contact also includes kissing, oral-genital, or oral-anal contact. In the past, people recognized only two major STDs, syphilis and gonorrhea, but today there are many known diseases that can be transmitted sexually. Among all, genital herpes pose serious threats to public health in the United States. It affects young people, and increased vulnerability to other diseases, and even threatening their lives (Sutton, p. 15). The purpose of this paper is to explore about genital herpes and find out if there are some control measures to reduce the risk of STDs, and related complications.
There are two serotypes of the virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-2 is what commonly causes genital herpes and recurring infections (McCance et al., 2014). HSV-1 more commonly causes cold sores but there is increased incidence of genital herpes caused by HSV-1 due to transmission during oral sex (however, this could be due to increased screening and testing rather than a rise in oral sex rates) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2015). HSV is transmitted by mucosal contact with an individual who has a lesion that is shedding the herpes virus; however, the virus can also be transmitted when an individual who is infected with HSV is shedding the virus asymptomatically and this is presumed to be when most transmission occurs (McCance et al., 2014, p. 933).
Human Papilloma Virus, known to most people as HPV, is an infectious disease that has become one of top causes of cervical cancer in women. With shocking surge in HPV prevalence, researchers are encouraged to discover more about this virus and how it leads to cervical cancer. Until recently, not many knew what HPV was; there hasn’t been enough research conducted on the virus. In fact, HPV was not significant enough to be taught in the Sexual Education classrooms as an Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). Years of research yielded information about how one contracts the virus, the symptoms or lack of symptoms, treatment and prevention for HPV.
A virus called herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes genital herpes. Sexual activity is the primary way that the virus spreads. After the first initial infection, it lies dormant in your body. That means it can reactivate many times in a year. There is no cure for genital herpes. They're medications for this infection that can reduce some of the pain and ease the symptoms. These medications can also reduce the ricks of spreading the infection to others, condoms can also help in preventing transmittion of the virus. Most of the people who have been infected with HSV dont know that they have been because there symptoms are so mild. When presented, the symptoms of genital herpes are pain and itching. This normally begins 2 to 10 day after exposure
Genital Herpes is more commonly caused by HSV-2 but is known to be caused by HSV-1. Oral Herpes is known to be caused by both variations of the virus but most commonly by HSV-1. Symptoms are similar to Genital Herpes and cases of Facial Herpes. For example, lesions on the cheeks or other area of the face have been recorded, though are a
HPV, human papillomavirus is a communal infection that is common among adults. It is one of the main sources of sexual transmitted infection. Over 75% of women that are sexually active are most likely to be infected at least once in their life. This virus is known to be a worldwide disease. According to the World Health Organization, the risk of acquiring HPV infection is highest soon after a sexual encounter. Most of these infections are self-limiting and harmless. The virus is harmless because a number of people don’t realize they are infected, because the virus is often subclinical. Persistent infections with oncongenic HPV types can cause cervical cancer in women. Even though, both male and female can be affected by the
Are there any symptoms associated with HPV? Yes and no, most with HPV never develop any symptoms or health problems. Genital warts, pain, itching, and bleeding are some symptoms of HPV. The only visible symptom of this virus is genital warts in which this is how most women figure out they have HPV. Women also find out they have HPV when they have
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States (CDC, 2013). People are having unprotected sex and passing these viruses from one parent to another every day and they don 't even know it’s happening. There is a vaccination called Gardasil that can prevent HPV for teenage girl, woman and teenage males now. Gardasil should be mandated for parents for vaccinating their children for these viruses. “For all ages between 9-26 years, this vaccination is the best method to prevent HPV infection and the risk of HPV related diseases” (CDC 2014). Gardasil should be a required immunization for getting into middle school or high school requirements. This vaccine is saving people from different kinds of
HPV is a common infection that many individuals are unaware that the infection is present because it goes away on its own after about two years. Many individuals will contract the infection and show no signs and symptoms. There are several different strains of this virus with each strain causing a different diagnosis. High-risk HPV strains will
What is an STD? I asked myself this two days ago. An STD is a Sexually Transmitted Disease. I chose this topic because I was unsure of what it was and you hear about it a lot. You mainly hear things about STDs on a Medical Website or TV show. They put stuff like STDs on their websites and shows to show kids how harmful it can be and what it is so they do not get freaked out.
