Popular for their distinctively simple and well crafted goods, architecture and apparel, the Shakers and the utopian villages they created continue to be a strong draw with visitors. With such a clear connection evident between their philosophy and the tangible mementoes of that philosophy, they are an important case study for anyone interested in modern, functional, high-quality design. The most frequented of the Shaker sites are those that were fortunate to have a long and uninterrupted occupancy. As the population declined the most in-tact villages were frozen in time and preserved for all to come and learn about this curious american religious phenomenon. Other communities that declined well before a popular interest was to develop faired less well and these places were broken up, some parts sold off and others modified for other uses or disappeared entirely. One such place is the Shaker site and Enfield in New Hampshire. When this community finally died out in the 1920s the property was sold to the La Salettes Order, for use as a catholic seminary. And this initiated one of the oddest religious architectural juxtapositions in America. Buildings from two religious communities each with a strong tradition of expressing their philosophies in architecture built within a few feet of each other. Next to the Shakers Great Stone Dwelling which was …show more content…
But the changes made by the La Salettes Order has presented an opportunity for those of us Shaker devotes. At other Shaker sites you would be immediately scolded if you step off the tour path or touch anything in one of the historic buildings. Uniquely at Enfield, you can spend the night, sleeping in the very rooms where Shaker families practiced their unique beliefs and toiled to create some of the America’s most distinctive and beautiful mass produced
LeAnne Howe’s novel Shell Shaker describes the family history and drama of a Choctaw family. In chapter 6, Auda Billy is being questioned about the murder of chief Redford McAlester. During Auda’s confession, she exposes the corruption of Native American gambling, she states “As you know, because we’re a sovereign nation, there’s no external oversight of the casino operations. Only three people- Red, Vico D’Amato and Carl Tonica- were privy to the real set of books, not the phony ones they submit to the BIA”(Howe 90). Here Auda explains how she knew that her tribe was laundering of money but did not take steps to intervene the situation. As Auda states that there were only three people, one of which was not a Native American, who ever sought

Bethan Gray is an award winning Welsh designer that has an unusual but impressive family origin. Her ancestors originate from an ancient Rajasthani clan that spent many hundreds of years journeying across Arabia and Persia before choosing to remain in the Celtic region of Wales. This very heritage wove its way into being some of Bethan Grays’s main influences and inspirations, which pull ideas shown within craft traditions of both the East and West. These influences are reflected in Gray’s style, showing a clear passion of detail, tactile textures, and extravagant materials such as rare stones, wood, marble and hand-tooled leather. Complex but complementary patterns of dark and light, texture and clear attention shown to the detail that defines her highly unique style. Even while using blacks and whites, Gray is also not afraid
Foner fails to provide any actual numbers regarding how many slaves were set free, or any indication how long this natural disintegration process would have taken. These few very small steps seem redundant in this grand marathon.
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. It started April 12, 1861, and ended May 9, 1865, in spite of the fact that many believed it would end up shorter. Because of the war, many workers left their homes and jobs to become soldiers. One enlisted soldier from Norwich, Vermont was named Daniel Currier; a farmer that left his home to the treachery of war. Daniel Currier was a soldier who trained to enter battle, nonetheless, it was not the exciting adventure he most likely expected, he probably expected to battle with the South. Even when he did get onto the battlefield, it was more horrific than he would have ever thought After this horrifying encounter with war he decided to and headed back home to his loving family and work as a farmer. As the following describes, war is not pleasant, and coming home can be comforting.
Our intrepid duo delves into their delightfully diverse cultural background and their travels around the world for the inspired custom made pieces that enhance the aesthetics of homes and public buildings.
Madera High is an ordinary high school in a fairly small town of about 60,000 people. Although the usual picture of bullying portrayed in the media does not occur here, there are still other forms of bullying and harassment that happen often. Cyberbullying has become the new form of harassment that teens use to bully other students. Social media is now the platform bullies prefer to use rather than the physical confrontation that bullying used to be. Through recent years, it has become an epidemic that has taken over the internet and social networks. It has made it even harder for students to get away from the bully or the person harassing them. At Madera High the amount of bullying seen at school by other students and staff is fairly low,

The largest mound discovered in North America is Monks Mound in Cahokia, located outside of present day St. Louis and covers more than eighteen acres and is over one hundred feet tall (3). Made with locally quarried soils and built in stages over the course of a century or more, these mounds served as platforms for building, stages for religious and social activities and some were even used as cemeteries (1). It is believed that natives often occupied pre-existing settlements where the previous chiefdom had died out and the site had been abandoned; the reoccupying of these sites lead to the buildup of the earth mounds. Mounds were formed in the shape similar to a pyramid with the top cut off leaving a platform on the summit. Mounds were used to define the public space of the settlements plaza. The chief’s house was always on the largest mound in the settlement. If the mound was large enough a temple could be added or even a mortuary house so natives could prepare their dead. If the chief’s mound was not big enough then the temple mound would be adjacent to the chief’s mound in the plaza so that they would face each other (2).
The group concentrated on form and texture. The group translated scale and detail into organic, sometimes abstract design (Jacobs, 1995).
The commandment now reads "No animal must drink alcohol to excess". Consequently, the use of foreshadowing allows the readers to connect the dots and suspect Squealer's control and power allows him and the pigs to break and manipulate any ideas or rules. It also creates and uneasy mood as the readers predict further abuses from Squealer and the pigs.
“Yale is the place that endowed me with the confidence and the grand scope of the world that a young designer needed to excel and make a difference in the real world.” – Yansong Ma. Yale University (M.Arch ’02).
