Shakespeare Behind Bars is a documentary that portrays the prisoners casting themselves in roles from Shakespeare reflecting their personal history and fate. The prisoner's individual stories and the crime they committed are perfectly connect with the plot of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. As the inmates deepdive into their characters, they have to come face to face with their personal demons. With the creative process and the power to heal, the result is an phenomenal story about the act of participation in theatre. This documentary was released on January 1st, 2005. The Correctional Complex was originally built to house 485 inmates and now has 11,000 inmates. This Correctional Complex has 60 different educational programs within the complex. …show more content…
With the intended audience, it’s a range from people who support these types of programs to people who want to know what this program is about and what they do. The supporters are a big deal to these programs, they help with the ones who want to better themselves. With the intended audience, it’s a range from people who support these types of programs to people who want to know what this program is about and what they do. The supporters are a big deal to these programs, they help with the ones who want to better themselves. I want the audience to think about how far the inmates have came and how they are trying to change for the good. I want them to support the programs, if we could have programs across the whole Unites States, the prisoners would become better people and not just get out of jail then go right back in. The primary goal for all of this is for the inmates to stand up to their fears. For example, one of the inmates in the play was talking about what he did to be in prison and it was hard for him to say it. He started to cry and choke a little bit but he finally said it and I understand why it was hard to say what he did. He sexually abused seven girls. Another one is, he was selling drugs at a young age and had a shootout with a police officer. Each day they
Shakespeare Inc., a private publishing company issued its F/S on March 20, 2012. There were several accruals and events that the management of Shakespeare is considering to determine if they should be recognized or disclosed in Dec 31, 2011 F/S. In my opinion, the important things to focus on subsequent events are the period they effect and if their influence is material or not, so that in conclusion, the F/S are fairly presented.
In Evans D. Hopkins’ “Lockdown,” Evan shares his experience of rehabilitation throughout his incarceration in the Nottaway Correctional Center in Virginia. Through persuasive writing Evans convinces the reader that rehabilitation is a necessity for prisoners in order to better themselves, and better the world as a whole. The prison system should provide low-level criminals with the tools for a better life after prison, should they want it. Hopkins uses emotional appeal to pull on the reader’s heartstrings.
State of Michigan implement program of Shakespeare Behind Bars by Curt L. Tofteland on July 14. It called Journeyman program and it changed of format. The Journeyman program specially designed for the inmates who are age between 18 to25. Also to serve the need, people can participants and get idea to create the Shakespeare in the Housing Unit program. The inmates who participates in the Shakespeare in the Housing Unit program would explore that the meaning of human being through art, theatre, and the works of William Shakespeare. The Michigan Department of Corrections embraces the mission, vision, and values of Shakespeare Behind Bars. Even the program of Michigan is not same as original program, but I believe they undergone a startling transformation.
This prison is 18,000 acres and has 6 complexes or as they refer to them in the film camps for different levels of security within the prison. There are 1800 employees working in the facility ranging from; janitors, nurses, doctors, block officers, deputies, work supervisors, yard officers, etc. Everyone has their own responsibilities, but they have the same goals to keep themselves and the inmates safe. The facility is first generation it has a linear design that makes supervision hard, since the officers aren't directly inside the blocks. Something that makes this prison interesting is that they actually built a town not very far from it to house employees.
Programs like Scared Straight consist of organized visits to prison facilities by juvenile delinquents or juveniles at risk of becoming delinquent or showing such behavior. During contact with the juveniles the adult inmates describe their experiences of cruel, harsh, and unpleasant conditions connected with jail or prison incarceration. The expected outcome
I think Shakespeare Behind Bars is a great program to help inmates feel more involved. This program gives them a chance to do something other than the regular daily routines of their prison. Helps them to create new friendships and express themselves in a way they haven’t been able to while stuck in a cell all day. While watching the video about a few of the inmates it told their story of how they ended up in prison. Some of them did really bad things but some did those things out of protection.
Attention Catcher: During the past year I’ve been dealing with inmates. And to just hear some of their stories touch my heart. Many of the inmates that I’ve talked to, half of them could not read or write. Some
There was a group of inmates in a Kentucky prison who created a program within the prison called Shakespeare Behind Bars. It helped the inmates put aside their past and connect with their present selves. One inmate who was changed by this program was Jerry Guenther. He is currently serving 45 years in prison for murder. Jerry said,”We live a lie. But in here, our acting is not acting: it’s telling the truth.” Another inmate who was changed by this program was Matt Wallace. He has directed the plays for the program for three years now. One thing that Matt said was,”The themes that are in these plays resonate so deeply in these guys. Through these plays they’re digging up some of the most painful and horrific parts of their lives.” These plays have helped inmates, who trust few people, open up to each other more. The Shakespeare Behind Bars program has helped inmates dig deeper into their own lives through the characters that they
This journal is based on a radio podcast called “Act V” which was originally aired through National Public Radio in Chicago in 2002. Through this podcast, I was able to learn new insights of the characters in Hamlet and the impact of literature among prisoners.
“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them” (Shakespeare). William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright who is considered one of the greatest writers to ever use the English language (“William Shakespeare his life, works and influence,” 2017). Known for many of his great works containing poems, plays, and sonnets dating back to 1592. “He was a man of his times, writing for his contemporaries on topics that were the hot-button issues of his day” (Tumiel, 2017). In the times during Shakespeare’s birth there were events taking place such as the age of protestant reformation and the renaissance, contributing to his works. The protestant age
Who was Shakespeare? Was he a man from Stratford-Upon-Avon who started with little and became the greatest English author to ever live; or was he a privileged Earl who was a favorite at Queen Elizabeth’s court? That is the great mystery. This particular mystery is difficult to solve because of the lack of documentary evidence. The Elizabethans did not believe in getting everything in writing as people do today. Therefore, the truth may never be known with certainty. However, evidence does exist to support at least two theories about the Shakespearean authorship: one that the man from Stratford wrote the works, the other that Edward de Vere the Earl of Oxford was the author. The question then becomes, which
Many people believe that Shakespeare wrote his own plays and many people do not. The author of article Read claims, "Some of Shakespeare's plays took place outside of London but Shakespeare never traveled outside of London. Shakespeare only had a few legal documents with his handwriting and his plays were written by a different hand. Also people say that the plays was wrote by a scholar and there is no proof that Shakespeare ever attended school" (Fraser). People who do not believe it was Shakespeare who wrote the plays think it was Sir Francis Bacon, Christopher Marlowe, or Edward de Vere. So the real question is: did Shakespeare really write his own plays or did someone else? It is Edward de Vere that wrote Shakespeare.
William Shakespeare is a loved play writer and author by many people around the world. William Shakespeare born on April 26, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom, was one of the world's best known and most loved play writers, and poem writers. Shakespeare's parents were John Shakespeare (his father) and Mary Shakespeare (his mother). John Shakespeare was a leather and wool worker and money lender, and Mary Shakespeare was a stay at home mom. William Shakespeare was baptized at the Holy Trinity Church which was located in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
The movie that is being compared to a story here is one of the all-time best. The main theme portrayed in "Shakespeare in Love" is a love that is never meant to be. "Shakespeare in Love" parallels the play Shakespeare is currently working on, Romeo and Juliet, in which love is not meant to be due to the many obstacles in the way. Shakespeare's life in the film is very comparable to Romeo's life in Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare's life in the film and the play he is writing has several similarities and differences. In my opinion, this is one of the best movies and books to compare.
William Shakespeare was a very talented man known for his various works of literature. His works include poems, plays, and sonnets. His works are then broken down into tragedies, comedies, and histories. Shakespeare left this world centuries ago, but his writings continue to live throughout the world today. He has greatly impacted the world of literature and his existence will forever be remembered.
