William Shakespeare, an English poet and playwright, was born in the community of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. (“William Shakespeare” 2624). It was not until 1592 when Shakespeare would eventually make the move to London to further his career (2624). When there, he became an actor and was called the “greatest shake-scene” because he was able to amaze audiences without a college education (2624). However, theater during this time was frowned upon by puritanical officials because they considered theater to be “hotbeds of immortality” (2625). Because of this, the company that Shakespeare worked for built a secret theater called the Globe (2625). At the Globe, all social classes were able to watch play because the cost was only a penny (2625). When Shakespeare began to write plays, he had to evoke the scene through his words because the Globe rarely used props (2625). Shakespeare’s plays did not submit to the stricter forms of classical drama, but rather his plays included comic routines and tragic soliloquies (2625). Due to his excellent writing, Shakespeare was able to achieve great financial success (2625). Despite his success, Shakespeare only wanted his plays to be performed, not printed (2625). His plays would become published after his death in 1616 by his friends (2626). Hamlet, based on a medieval Scandinavian legend, is perhaps one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, and it “constitutes the most important body of dramatic work in the modern world…” (“William Shakespeare” 2626). The play starts with the recent death of King Hamlet, Prince Hamlet’s father. After the death, Claudius, King Hamlet’s brother, becomes the King of Denmark. In addition to become King of Denmark, King Claudius marries Prince Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude. Prince Hamlet is enraged by the actions of King Claudius and he seeks revenge. The ghost of King Hamlet appears and tells Prince Hamlet that King Claudius murdered him. To prove King Claudius killed his father, Prince Hamlet puts on a play that reenacts the way King Claudius killed his father. King Claudius’s reaction to the play proves that he is guilty of murder.
