There are many portrayals of Shakespeare’s novel Macbeth. I compared two movies’ differences during one scene; one was released in 2006 and directed by Geoffrey Wright and the other was released in 2010 directed by Rupert Goold. A scene that I felt intrigued by is when Macbeth returns to see the witches for the second time while they were conjuring up a potion. Each of the movies and this particular scene took place in very different settings. Not only were the settings portrayed differently, but also the supernatural presentation in the scenes and the characteristics of the three witches. Both movies have been converted to modern times. However, each portray Macbeth differently in their locations. The movie made in 2006 was set in a house, but more specifically the witches were brewing in the kitchen. This setting is more realistic than the other because the witches are able to concoct what they desire. However, the scene moved to a bedroom; this is where Macbeth was told the path of his fate. The setting of the movie made in 2010 was what seemed to be like a temporary hospital or morgue. There were three plastic covered dead bodies lying on separate medical …show more content…
In the 2006 movie, Macbeth drank a potion that the witches prepared. His visions were told by each of the three witches while they were fornicating. Their supernatural powers made them appear possessed because when they foretold his fate their voices were no longer feminine but masculine. In the 2010 movie, the witches “rapped” or put the recipe into a song making it seem more like a curse rather than a mixture for a potion. There was also nothing for Macbeth to drink like in the original story and the other movie. The fortunes were told by each of the witches and the dead bodies combined. The witches would either touch the deceased and speak for them or place their hand upon the body to make them rise and speak
William Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Macbeth, is a tragedy brilliantly brought to the 21st Century by Rupert Goold. Although Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a play set in 16th Century Scotland, Rupert Goold modernizes the play by changing the setting to a Soviet-styled country and implementing modern elements into the characters and theme. Although Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Rupert Goold’s film adaptation share many ideologies and a general storyline, a difference exists in the setting, the characters, and the overall ambience of the story.
As a play, Macbeth is intended to be interpreted differently by different directors, which allows each performance to be unique. Polanski used the play’s original setting, while Goold placed the story in the 20th century. The cast of the Goold film stayed closer to how the characters were written by Shakespeare, while Polanski’s cast portayed the main characters slightly differently, with more emphasis given to Macbeth than Lady Macbeth. Polanski’s witches were
Comparing 1971, 2006, 2010 versions of Macbeth there are multiple differences in the movies. The version of Macbeth in 1971 begins with three witches all three different ages. The three witches had also buried a person's hand in a sandy beach. When they placed the hand into the hole with a bloody dagger, they also were saying a spell. In 2006 another version of Macbeth was made. In this version the three witches had red hair and looked like they were sisters. The three witches were in a graveyard destroying tombstones. The version of Macbeth made in 2010 was more on the gory side. The three witches were younger late 20’s early 30’s. The witches were located in a hospital with them ending in killing an injured man. The three witches ripped the
There was a clear distinction between the book, Macbeth and the 2010 version of the movie, Macbeth, but there were also some similarities included, to prove that it was still Macbeth. In contrast with the book, the movie took place closer to the present, beginning with a civil war and men using weapons that corresponded with its time period, which was fair for an interpretation. Conversely, I felt as though it lost some of its charm, because I truly believed that I, along with every single person who had read Macbeth, would have envisioned the setting to take place in an older period of time.
Macbeth and Throne of Blood both have supernatural aspects in it. In the movie Throne of Blood there was a spirit in the forest that told Washizu about the future. In Macbeth there was three witches that also told Macbeth about the future. In Macbeth the witches tell Macbeth that he will become king of Scotland. Shakespeare Act 1 scene 3 line 50 “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter”! In the Throne of Blood Washizu son will become lord. In Macbeth the witches tell Macbeth that Banquo will be the father of many generations of kings. In the Throne of Blood the spirit says Miki will become the
The original Macbeth is most notably a tragedy but also has comedic aspects to it as well. The film Macbeth really accentuated that tragedy aspect but eliminated all of the comedic relief from the original. Scotland,PA did the opposite and even though there were still factors of a tragedy they really used those scenes to make the fact that it was a black comedy abundantly clear. Even in the darkest and grimmest moments there was still an obvious sense of humour which really differed from the original play. Scotland, PA barely resembles its model Macbeth because it has been modernized and only contains a similar plot and similar character names. However, in contrast, the film Macbeth attempts to be faithful while intensifying the tragedy aspect of the play, adding their own interpretation, and adding details to places where the play itself was
Director Rupert Goold created a very unconventional version of Macbeth. He gives the setting a Soviet Union feel a makes Macbeth’s character almost like Joseph Stalin in brutality and ruthlessness. The majority of the production takes place in these underground bunkers making you feel like they are in World War II. Goold put so much thought into this rendition of the Shakespearean play so you can assume he out as much though as who he casted as the main roles and how they should portray them. Some things about his character I liked, however, I did have many complaints. Goold chose Patrick Stewart as Macbeth,Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth, and Sophie Hunter, Polly Frame, and Niamh McGrady as the three witches.
Both Roman Polanski and Patrick Stewart have created their own twist to the original “Macbeth” movie and storyline. Roman Polanski added a modern twist. He uses more modern objects such as the chain with Jesus as his object that he sees in front of himself at the beginning of the murder scene. He also used a very different setting than Patrick, in that the scene was in a modern household. On the other hand, Patrick stewart stuck as close to the script as possible.
As a virgin to The Shakespeare Theatre, I was pleasantly surprised when my recent encounter with Macbeth was a stimulating and enjoyable excursion. The two and a half hours I had predicted to be less than enchanting were filled with symbolism, and an overall attitude towards the Shakespeare classic that I had never contemplated before.
Macbeth is a 17th-century tragedy play that was written by William Shakespeare. It follows the journey of a Scottish general named Macbeth, who receives a prophecy from three sisters that he will become the king of Scotland. The narrative presents issues regarding the depths of what humans will do to get what others have and ‘deceptive appearances’, which are shown through a number of techniques such as foreshadowing, imagery and characterization. Such ideas would be interpreted differently by an Elizabethan when compared to a modern day audience.
Shakespeare wrote macbeth for King James I to impress him. King James funded and supported all of his endeavors and decisions throughout the making of the play. It is rumored that Shakespeare put many different elements of black magic and witches into the play because that appealed to King James. LIttle did he know the black magic and witch scenes were filled with authentic spells. Since the spells are real, the three witches are awakened every time the play is performed. The three witches were not happy that their black magic was used, so they cursed all of the performances for the future. The real spells are found in the three witches scene in Act 1 Scene 1, Act 1 Scene 3, Act 3 Scene 5, and Act 4 Scene 1. Another rumor is that Shakespeare
There are many differences between these two version of MacBeth, and each of them, I believe, serves it's own purpose to enhance and better the
Macbeth, is a film that was made in 2015 and was directed by Justin Kurzel. The screenplay used for the movie was written by Todd Louiso, Jacob Koskoff, and Michael Lesslie. On the other hand, the screenplay was adapted by William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. William Shakespeare wrote this play back in 1606. The film and the play have some differences, some being small details that were just added by the writers of the screenplay. However, because this film is based on William Shakespeare’s play, there are also many similarities. A difference that stood out in the movie was the opening scene, where it shows a burial being held for what the audience can assume is Macbeth’s son. What I noticed throughout the film was that the storyline was based off of what was taking place in the movie (actions), rather than what
As he degenerates, he becomes more deluded about his invulnerability and more emboldened. What he gains in will and confidence is counterbalanced and eventually toppled by the iniquitous weight of the events he set
Lady Macbeth is a really critical role in the play Macbeth and Marion Cotillard played the role very well. Lady Macbeth in 2015 showed more dominance, protective, caring and a little bit more convincing compared the Lady Macbeth from 1971. The 1971 Lady Macbeth seemed really hungry for power and she seemed really emotionless as well, for example when she had Duncan's blood on her hand, she just washed it off compared to Macbeth who has seen a lot of blood in his life but still had
