The Transformation of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth decide, in a great fit of ambition, to kill King Duncan. Later in the play we see the same two characters undergo a transformation in their personalities after murdering the King. Macbeth begins the play as a noble soldier and gradually changes into an ambitious and murdering tyrant. Lady Macbeth begins as a strong, ambitious woman who dominates her husband and gradually changes into a weak and guilt-ridden woman. This essay will explore the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth before and after the murder of King Duncan.

These prophecies severely change the lives of both soldiers. The three witches surprise Macbeth and Banquo but tell Macbeth the prophecy of him being given the position of Thane of Cawdor. Secondly speaking, ¡§All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!¡¨ (Act 1, scene iii p.12) They then tell Banquo that his sons will be kings but he will never rule a King. This news frightens Macbeth and both try to put it in the back of their minds, thinking of it as a prank. This is until Ross, one of the kings men, greets Macbeth and Banquo and gives great news to Macbeth in these words:

”He bade me (the king), from him, call thee Thane of Cawdor, in which addition, hail, most worthy thane! For it is thine¡¨ (Act1, scene iii p.16).

These words start Macbeth’s ambition rolling. Macbeth begins to think that the witches are speaking the truth and one day soon he will become King. He travels to the King who officially names him Thane of Cawdor and tells him that he will visit Macbeth¡¦s castle to celebrate. Macbeth sends a message to his beloved wife, telling her of the prophecies and his new title. This excites Lady Macbeth but it is not until she is told by Macbeth that King Duncan would be staying with them, that she begins to plot his murder.
