(Play 30 seconds of song) It’s Selena Quintanilla’s song, “Amor Prohibido.” Well, I kind of admire her even though she died 4 years exactly before I was born. I will talk about Selena Quintanilla’s childhood, early career life and her death. I feel I am the one to teach you about her because I admire her, and I grew up with her music and still listen to it today.

She was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas and died on March 31, 1995 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture states that, “she [Selena] was widely popular with Latino audiences, especially young women, who looked to her as a role model.” Although, Selena had a short life that did not prevent her from becoming a legend.

Imagine standing among a crowd of adoring fans cheering on a famous singer that is dancing and twirling on stage. This is what many of Selena Quintanilla fans experienced at her lively concerts. Selena Quintanilla was a Mexican - American singer that was on the verge of stardom before being tragically shot. She inspired many people and was a beloved idol. She grew up in a Christian family home with a mother, father and two brothers. She attended church every Sunday and started out singing in the church choir at a very young age. Fantasia and her family traveled from city to city to perform and record gospel music. Music played a huge part in Fantasia Barrino family life. Majority of the family members sang gospel music as well as soul music. She attended Andrews High School during her teenage years. She won the American Idol title in 2004 after showing the world that she has a voice.

Selena was a great warrior, she brought many people together with her music. Selena made music in both spanish and english which brought both communities together, “Throughout her career, Selena was not only inspired by Tejano music but created a fusion of musical genres that incorporated other Latin sounds and inevitably won over Latinos across the country,” (“Selena.”) Selena was able to lace both communities together due to her mixed cultural background. Her music was a great way to bring people together.

Evidently, Barraza was born in Kingsville, Texas. Santa Barraza is the second of six children; Joaquin Barraza (Santa Barraza’s Father) worked his whole life in order to provide money and opportunities for his wife and children. Barraza’s mother was a feminist throughout her life.
