Shared Leadership Leadership has been studied a countless amount of times, but there is not one leadership style that is proven to be the best for an organization. The complexity of today’s business environment makes leadership increasingly more challenging. There have been continuous arguments about how it is becoming more difficult for any single individual to possess all of the skills and abilities required to competently lead an organization today (Kocolowski, 2010). Therefore, I believe having a leadership team of varying personality types or leadership styles, to such extent, is an effective way to manage the diversity in the workplace and the continuous changes in the world of work. Shared leadership can be defined as a dynamic interactive …show more content…
Shared leadership is a team environment that consists of three dimensions: shared purpose, social support, and voice. Shared purpose exists when team members have similar understandings of their team’s main objectives and takes steps to ensure a focus on collective goals (Carson, 2007). Shared purpose is the whole reason why the team exists and what they are working towards. This is the fundamental factor that leaders are trying to motivate the individuals around them to achieve. Social support is the extent to which team members actively provide emotional and psychological strength to one another (Carson, 2007). Social support consists of feeling recognized and supported within the team in which they belong. Social support is a crucial shared leadership factor that can determine the level of commitment from the team members. Voice is the degree to which a team’s members have to input into how to team carries out its purpose (Carson, 2007). The voice dimension provides a common sense of direction and the support demanded within a team environment. Carson concludes that the three dimensions work together to create an internal team environment that is characterized by a shared understanding about purpose and goals, a sense of recognition and importance, and high levels of involvement, challenge, and cooperation (Carson, …show more content…
I have had numerous jobs in my past, and have been exposed to very efficient management or leadership teams, and ones that have been significantly weaker and were evident in the work environment and employee attitudes. My reflection piece is outside of the typical work environment and is going to be based on my experiences attending University on a hockey scholarship; and my positive experiences with shared leadership. Although a hockey team may seem like an informal example of a successful shared leadership experience, the strategies executed by the leadership roles on the hockey team could be very easily transported into my future careers. The hierarchy of this specific example was the Head Coach of the hockey team, a Captain and three Assistant Captains; one being myself. To paint a picture, a typical workweek as a student athlete consisted of early morning one hour on ice skate, a full day of classes, an hour off-ice workout session, and an evening two-hour on ice skate. It was a very big commitment to balance the schedule of full time school and a full time job being an athlete as well. We were held to a different expectation than some of our surrounding students. The coaching staff, through weekly grade reports, closely monitored our GPA, and we were expected to maintain a higher minimum average than what the school specifies in order to compete
There is a great importance put on business leadership, this is directly due to how a business not only functions but in how fruitful the company can become. A great leader essentially can take a business plan that is weak yet turn it into a success, whereas a poor leader stands a higher chance of ruining the best of business plans. That is why it is essential to develop effective leadership throughout a companies entire management program at all levels. How does one develop or retain strong leadership? Companies must be focused on hiring strategies that encompass very specific parameters, building from within whilst creating a strong foundation for employee development and succession planning. Leadership is essential in any organization. The style and theory embraced determines whether the company will or will not achieve their goals. in all cases theory must be embraced, as a companies theory, style, and strategy is greatly dependent on the industry the company is in (Sadler, 2014). “The behavioral theory is one of the widely used theories of management. It suggests that leaders are made and not born. It gives room for training to install leadership traits in leaders at the expense of denying them a chance. There are various leadership styles embraced by companies (Cyert, & March, 2005).” This paper takes a look at the management styles of two specific
Factors that can influence an individual’s choice of leadership in any given situation are many and varied. An individual is likely to have a primary leadership style which they are most comfortable with using. Often the primary leadership style is that which most suits their innate personality traits. For example,
The authors also found that from their study, improved communication processes increased; being respected and understood increased and supporting/sharing leadership increased; which in turn created a more collaborative and successful
A1. Leadership Style Upon conducting research, it is clear that the definition of “leadership” is not agreed upon. It is fluid, based upon many perceptions, situations, and surroundings. According to Robinson (2010), adopting a specific style of leadership is rather futile as it is, “contingent on the personal traits of the leader, the people being led, and the nature of the activity.” Tools are available to help guide potential leaders in determining a preferred style of leadership. For example, utilizing the “Leadership Self-Assessment
This approach emphasize that having a leader with a certain set of traits is crucial to having effective leadership. It’s the leader and the leader’s personality that are central to the leadership process.
At Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC), there are a variety of teams that make up the organization which includes the hospital and outpatient affiliated clinics. Due to the diversity of healthcare services that are provided at GRMC, a team leadership approach is essential to the success of the organization. According to Northouse (2016), leadership is “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (p. 6). Through this process, leaders help to create vision and direction for the team while engaging others on the team through motivation and inspiration, to reach a common goal (Northouse, 2016). In this paper, we will discuss the steps necessary to create more successful teams at various levels
Leadership, team diversity and managing conflict resolution is just some of the high points for having a successful team or group. In this paper we will explain what leadership is and the different behavioral styles it represents. It will also touch base on setting higher expectations, creating a vision for the group, as well as stimulating the group to come up with challenging ways of doing things to help avoid burnout.
Since the beginning of recorded history, leadership has been one of, if not the most important elements in the success or failure of an endeavor. This is whether it involved a prehistoric hunting party or ruling the Roman Empire. Today, leadership is recognized as a vital factor in an organization’s quest to be productive and profitable. For an organization to be competitive and achieve optimum success in the 21st century, it is vital that they employ effective leaders that will be able to communicate their vision and goals, motivate their employees and develop trusting and loyal relationships with its stakeholders. There is no one or best way to accomplish this mission. There have been numerous leadership theories and styles which have been developed over time which can enable leaders to choose which method would be most effective for them in establishing collaborative working relationships and a respectful team environment in a group setting (Landis, Eric A; Hill, Deborah; Harvey, Maurice R, 2014).
Leadership can be defined as the process of identifying a goal, motivating others, and make them to achieve the mutually goals (Giltinane, 2013). According to Humphreys (2002), successful leaders do this by applying their leadership knowledge and skills. A good leadership is not only good at management, but also use different leadership styles in different situations. A successful corporation must has a good leader who have the flexible ability which can provide a suitable leadership to make the company successful. Furthermore, there have no perfect leadership styles in the world. Different leader have different leadership styles which also have the different strengths and weaknesses (Ali & Waqar, 2013). Leaders need to consider
The styles today are less authoritative and more on trying to get feedback from co-workers. This change is driven by today’s individuals that want to be treated with respect and empowered to be self-driven. Today’s business environment requires managers to constantly evaluate his or her leadership style to maintain the so called competitive edge. Leadership moves through many power roles and how power vs. soft power that relates to managers as they manage people. The types of leaders are described with characteristics, as it relates to each individual. The characteristics styles that leaders show
Leadership styles and behaviors very depending on the organization needs, cultural diversity, and human behavior (Northouse, 2013), however, no one leadership style is more effective than the next. Working in the healthcare industry, I’m exposed to an extensive array of different characteristics ranging from patient to professional to external third-party contractors, including the diversity within my department. However, given the situation in question position the position I’m placed in can only mean one thing; following the set forth policies will be the direction that is taking for the situation, this will allow me to remove myself personal perceptions and beliefs. As a
Humans have been forming groups since the beginning of humanity. We are constantly categorized as a group at the basic level as a species, as an ethnicity, and as a society. It is speculated that our success and evolution as a species is based on our ability to work with each other in collaboration on many levels to ensure our survival. Groups have enabled us to get things done efficiently, whether by combined physical effort, mental effort of generating ideas, or support of others. At its most effective, a group is considered a team. Teams are formed when
Despite the advantages associated with a shared leadership approach, some disadvantages also exist. One disadvantage originates from individual interpretations of teamwork (Baghai & Quigley, 2012). In other words, not all people in a work environment view working together the same, posing a leadership challenge to clearly delineate the organization’s concept of team. Other disadvantages arise when workers chose to bypass or overlook some team members, or when an individual lacks the confidence to exhibit leadership skills resulting in organizational loss of leadership potential (Pearce, Wassenaar, & Manz, 2014).
Research on management and leadership in organizations over the past century shows there are still no clear definitions or answers about what counts as effective and successful leadership; the field remains varied and argued. Actual studies of leadership began in the early twentieth century. The research and studies on leadership have resulted in defining what characters, traits and attitudes are considered to be significant for leaders to possess. The early studies of leadership theories focused on the person and their behaviors, currently known as leadership trait theories and behavioral theories. It is important for organizational leaders and managers to understand what characteristics, traits and actions of an individual mark a great leader when forming a strong diverse workforce.
The group assessment in this unit put together four motivated members that wanted to create quality work. Interestingly, it also included for the first time, in my many team assessments, an additional strong-minded member that wished to lead the group. Sousa & van Dierendonck (2015, p. 15) propose, that sharing leadership duties requires humility from the group leaders to allow others to take responsibility for the task whilst remaining willing to step in and lead when needed. DuBrin (2016, p.27) further states that good team members have the courage to challenge the direction the task is taking and therefore showing leadership within the group. This was an important learning activity for myself as I moved from initial apprehension of joint leadership, to increasingly appreciating the strengths of other team members and the value this added.
