My heart began to beat at a rapid rate, “THUMP, THUMP, THUMP.” As the scuba diving boat came to a halt, all I could see was the dark, deep, blue ocean separating me and the island of Dhidhoofinolhu on the horizon. The day began so simple as my family and I were enjoying breakfast on the shoreline, admiring the Maldivian sunrise, talking about the plan for the day until my father said, “We are going whale shark diving!” At that moment I was delighted, I had always wanted to go swimming with whale sharks because they are beautiful, harmless creatures. My sister and I immediately ran to the watersports center of the hotel, scrambling to find the right pair of flippers and scuba masks so that we could leave promptly. The boat departed at thirteen hundred hours exactly. As I stepped onto the colorful, traditional Maldivian boat my thoughts began to run wild. As the boat began its thirty-minute course, I also began to think about all the things that could go wrong. For example, I began to think about how a great white shark would come up from the dark unknown and swallow me whole or bite my leg off. My thoughts were interrupted by the guide shouting, …show more content…
At this point, my heart was about to beat out of my chest. All I could think about was the manta rays and how they have poisonous tails that can kill instantly. What completely surprised me, was how fast everyone on the boat jumped into the water including my sister, mother, and father. I was left on the boat stressing about how one of my family members could get stung and die. My thoughts were yet again distracted by my mother shouting, “Evy, jump in it’s super cool! They are beautiful!” Of course, the captain had to join in on the conversation and try to convince me to jump, but I was not
So Fernanda jumped and “pencil dived” to grab Roene, and it worked! But when Fernanda was grabbing Roene, she dropped the rope and hatchet. When Nathan and I were landing in the water, we had to loosen the chest strap before we landed. Once we landed we had to take it off carefully and let the parachute sink. Roene and Fernanda wanted to save the parachute, for supplies. So before they hit the water, Fernanda dropped Roene into the water, Roene swam away a little. While Fernanda was still in the air she loosened the chest strap and when she landed she took it off. Meanwhile, Roene quickly grabbed the parachute and successfully saved it. We swam towards each other while Nathan inflated the dinghy. We were about a three-minute swim away from each other, but there were some pretty big waves. When we noticed that there were sharks! While the rest of us were panicking, Fernanda discovered that they were whale sharks! She told us that whale sharks don’t eat humans! We were so relieved. While we were paddling to shore, Roene hit Nathan in the head with her oar! Nathan got a concussion, but he was okay since he just lay on the bottom of the dinghy. We were a six-hour paddle
April 14th, 2016, 10:00 pm, on board the Norwegian Dawn. Jackson Shloo and his wife were at dinner, at the McDonald's on board. The rest of the restaurants were closed or too crowded at this hour to get a table. After their “meal,” they decided to have the night of their life, party in the club, then at Midnight go to the ship deck and watch the waves. Their kids were in their room on the ship, fast asleep, nothing could wake them up. Jackson didn’t know that he would never see them again, forever. 11:00 pm. Jackson and his wife were at the club, not drinking, but just dancing, nothing seemed different, out of the ordinary, deadly and life changing.
Personal Response: I read the book Surviving Sharks by Allan Zullo. It was not just about shark attacks. The book contained a different story every chapter with different characters and a different dangerous animal. The book was good and it held my attention throughout the entire book. There was no slow points in the book, which made the book easier to read.
In the study of the main character Beth in the short story “ The Truth about sharks” can determine that the she is a dynamic character because throughout the story Beth’s personality changes. This is shown throughout the story her character changes as the story progresses from a coward to someone who is willing to stand up for herself. In the story Truth about Sharks by Joan Bauer the main character Beth is a weak willed ,lazy person who is forced to wake up in the morning to do chores and get ready for a party later that day. Wanting to buy clothes for the party hastily puts on messy clothes and is pegged as a troublemaker by the security Guard in the store Mitchell Gails. She is seen walking around the store with unpaid clothes she wanted
When I came into the Corps I was and still am a scrawny kid; five feet seven and one hundred twenty pounds soaking wet. I came to the Corps to be challenged physically and mentally, however, I was not prepared for what I was getting myself into; I joined the Fighting Texas Aggie Fish Drill Team.
One sunny day an eighteen year old girl was enjoying the view from the docks at Oxnard, CA when she slipped and fell into the ocean. Thankfully no one had noticed what happened and she slowly made her way to the beach underneath the docks. When Oceania finally made it to the shore she was so tired that she passed out from exhaustion. When she woke up an hour later Oceania started to get up only to discover that instead of legs she had a fishtail. As she was trying to get clear of the water, she was discovered by the owner of Seaworld. As soon as he spotted her, he quickly called his crew up and they caught and transported her to Seaworld. Once there they placed her in with the dolphins and told her what to do for a performance with the dolphins.
We slowly drove out to the faster speed limit part of the lake, once there I was given a small briefing about hand signals. Gracye’s Dad told me, “Thumb down means slower, thumb up means faster, and hand horizontal means perfect.” After the briefing we got our life jackets on and literally jumped from the boat to the tubes which were now almost out of reach, quickly trailing behind the boat. The rope attached to the tube was quicklypulled out very far and was tightly being pulled from behind the boat, me on the biggest tube in the middle and Gracye on the smaller one on the right of me. We got to a moderately fast pace for me and it ended up not being as frightening as I thought it would be. Her Dad had started picking up the speed by this time and I was beginning to get scared. I signaled to have him slow down and he ended up slowing down after five minutes, or so I thought, but he was just winding the boat up for a whip which while happening, I was holding on for dear life and I felt my life flash before my
Imagine a world without your favorite foods you have ever consumed. Imagine a world where you cannot even enjoy your favorite beach on vacation because of unmanageable algae taking over our coasts. Imagine a world with a huge spike in greenhouse gases, and a dramatic decline of natural oxygen production. This is a world without the most feared and misunderstood creature that rules our oceans, the Shark. In an advertisement published by WWF, it conveys the message of what we should actually be fearing, the fall of our marine ecosystems and what that will do to humanity. The advertisement uses all three appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos to push their targeted audience to further their education on our world and to spread the word to everyone
The Amazing Sharks Imagine you are on a surfboard and see see something small and grey coming at you. What would you do? Sharks mistake humans for other prey such as turtles or seals. Humans have mistakenly thought sharks, especially the Great Whites, are vicious man-eaters, but they are actually decent creatures. Sharks are curious creatures that some people need to learn more about them.
I muttered swear words under my breath as I finally made it into the doors of work. Usually I'm never late, but I got caught up with an excellent argumentative article on tiger sharks.
We all got in the water with my sister leading us. As we started to get farther out into the water I saw something right in front of my sister. I was scared that it was a manta ray or a shark, and immediately grabbed Tia and turned around. She pulled back on my arm and pointed at the large creature. It wasn’t a shark or a manta ray or an unknown monster, but it was a mantaray. We followed it around for a while trying to swim next to it. I went underwater and was right next to the manta ray. I was so close that I could reach out and touch it. That is exactly what I did. I wanted to continue to follow it into the ocean, but soon realized that I could no longer touch the ocean bottom. My sister told me that we needed to head back to the shore and I agreed with
I am known to be extremely clumsy. With that, it’s expected that I often end up in awkward situations. In the past I have called numerous teachers “Mom,” fallen down while walking up stairs, almost fallen off a cliff; and it can be assured there were many more instances where my embarrassing clumsiness had led me into awkward, sometimes life threatening, situations. One moment that stands out in particular takes place in every marine animal welfare activists’ “favorite” place, Sea World.
I wanted to take that boat out and go tubing for the first time in my life. I was so excited that I even offered to blow up the tube by myself with nothing but my lungs, not knowing we had an air pump. Finally, after what felt like hours of begging like the annoying twelve year old I was, my dad said it was time to go. My sisters and I got our life jackets and wet shirts on, while my baby brother and step mom got on the boat, and my dad sat in the driver’s seat. My sisters and I were on the back on the tube, trying to find the best way to position our arms so we didn’t fall off. My dad turned the key to the boat and suddenly, my excitement turned to sheer panic. What happens if I fall off? What if my sisters fall off? What if there was a lake monster or a really big fish in the water? From that moment on, I was determined to stay on, so I held on to the handles for dear
July 5th 2016 was a very hot and very sunny day, it felt as if my skin was being cooked. My family and I went on the boat and hung out by the sand bar all morning. It’s mixed emotions being on the tube, considering the boat is going about 35 MPH, I’m on a tube in the wavy lake, connected by a rope to the boat. It’s hard to focus on one emotion. I’m excited and terrified all in one. Although we picture lake time always being a great time, that July day was not a great time. I remember feeling as if our bodies were giving in to the sun so we decided to call it a day around 2 PM. We approached the pier to pull the boat in. Our dock is a parking space in water surrounded by a wooden pier on the sides and the front. To prevent the boat hitting from the sides, my brothers, my mom, and I will grab the sides of the pier as my dad steers it.
In my opinion, people should start to protect the sharks because they have the misunderstanding of it. Most of the people believe sharks are stronger, cruel and evil than the other animals, even humans. In contrast, sharks are less powerful than people thought, it still easy to be captured by the human and be cut off their fins. However, why people misunderstand the sharks? I think this may cause by the media. Because sharks have a negative image in many movies, comics and cartoon. The producer always shapes them like a bloody murder, everyday bully or eat the others marine organisms. Although, sharks have the lovely appearance but constantly be showed them annoying behavior in the cartoon. So, people always associate sharks are wicked which should be killed. It seems media imperceptible to constitute a misconception of sharks in our mind from our childhood. Sometimes, the editor must vilify the sharks because they need to meet the people expectation. Nowadays, if the news only reports how sharks are playful and positive, it cannot draw audience attention. Therefore, the editor needs to exaggerate description of sharks, so this can increase people's fear and the advertiser can gain more money. Besides, we always can see shark fins on many Chinese banquets, which can show off how rich they are. This induces more and more
