In the story “Shaving” by Leslie Norris the main character is a boy who is growing up and has to take responsibilities for the family. He has to take responsibility for the family because his father is growing older and he is the only other male in the family. For example, when Barry’s mother says “Mr. Cleaver was supposed to come up and shave him” Barry replies by saying “I’ll shave him” (113). This shows that Barry is growing up and that he thinks he can shave his father instead of his father asking Mr. Cleaver to come shave him. Another example of Barry growing up is when he says he is “not too young” and that he is “bigger than most men” (116).
