The movie, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is based on a character Andy Dufresne. Andy is a young and successful banker who is sent to Shawshank Prison for murdering his wife and her secret lover. His life is changed drastically upon being convicted and being sent to prison. He is sent to prison to serve a life term. Over the 20-years in prison, Andy retains optimism and eventually earns the respect of his fellow inmates. He becomes friends with Red, and they both comfort and empathize with each other while in prison. The story has a strong message of hope, spirit, determination, courage, and desire.

(Part I) Nicole Rafter identifies several stock characteristics that dominate the traditional film. First, there is the convict buddy. In The Shawshank Redemption our innocent protagonist Andy is quickly befriended by prison veteran, Red. Red’s voice can be heard narrating his thoughts about his friend Andy. As the story goes on, their relationship is further explored to the point that the last shot is them reuniting. Common to traditional prison films is a paternalistic warden, but this is not the case in Shawshank Prison. The warden here is very greedy and immoral which is a general a characteristic of more recent prison films. Another stock character is a brutish guard which we see exemplified in Captain Byron Hadley. He beats a man to death in the first act of the film. Finally, we have Andy, who is the young hero, or at least he is fairly young when he goes into prison. He is innocent and thus exemplifies Rafter’s stock character of having an unjustly accused protagonist. Rafter also notes stock plots that often play out. In The Shawshank Redemption, the innocent hero Andy escapes while simultaneously bringing condemnation on the unjust members of the prison. This plot corresponds to one of Rafter’s traditional prison plots (2006, 166). Lastly, there is the idea of stock themes in traditional prison films. Most movies offer us a quick and superficial emotions, but Shawshank Redemption makes us feel like part of the family so we hold onto our emotions. The narrators slow and calm voice tells us the story of the men who have been forced behind bars, his voice makes the film have a deeper emotion to it. Andy Dufresne, a convict in Shawshank, is actually the hero of the movie, but it is interesting because we never see the action from his point of view. With few words spoken from Andy, we are able to feel what is happening to him, and that is something I like about this movie.

During Andy and Red’s first encounter in the yard when Andy asks Red if he could possibly get him a rock hammer he says to Red “I have no enemies here” and Red replies “No?” with a smile, and said “Wait awhile” (King, 1982).   Since Andy is new to prison life, he does not understand that the second he walked into Shawshank prison he made enemies already, but Red understands that and sarcastically warns Andy about the possible threats are becoming more apparent.   A man like Red, a man who has many friends on the inside know that those friends and popularity will help keep him safe and alive.   While Andy is a man without friends and will eventually not be safe in Shawshank Prison anymore unless he begins to make friends and alliances.

When Andy is in the prison, there was another conflict, he wants to have freedom while he can only have imprisonment. But he nerves give up. Writing one letter a week for six years got him funding for the prison library. His behavior shows his Persistence and perseverance. He spent almost twenty years to chisel a hole on the wall. He escaped in the end. He had the redemption of himself.

“The Shawshank Redemption” directed by Frank Darabont is an exceedingly powerful movie, which demonstrates the ability of possessing hope in a prison using film technique. This consists of camera shots and angles, music, lighting, setting, and themes which are crucial in establishing the emotional states of characters and demonstrating the growth of hope in the individuals. Darabont influences the audience to recognize hope portrayed in the film by virtue of the characters Brooks, Red, and Andy Dufresne. Eventually, the warden hears of Andy’s expertise in banking and uses him to launder money in an extravagant scheme. In his 19th year in prison, Andy hears the true story of how his wife died, and he presents his findings to the warden in hopes of overturning his sentence. The warden denies him the opportunity and Andy decides he can take no more, so he escapes through a tunnel he had been digging for nearly 20 years. After he escapes, Andy exposes the warden’s crimes then flees to a far away city in Mexico where he planned to meet Red if he ever was released. Red is granted parole shortly after Andy’s escape, and the two friends are reunited as free men. The title of this movie is symbolic and highlights this principal idea of redemption via the two main characters who are reaching redemption. Andy did not actually commit the crimes for which he is punished. Red has spent almost 40 years in prison for a murder that he actually commits. Both Andy and Red ultimately find redemption. Andy understands that he is the only one who can help himself get redemption. For this reason, he escapes from the prison after approximately 20 years by digging his way out. Red finally understands the necessity of getting parole, and therefore decides that he not only has to formally give answers that the parole committee wants to hear, but more importantly begins to truly believe in his own redemption. His skills helped him gain the trust and popularity from both Mr. Warden and his inmates. He is calm and cool in behavior that made him likable. He is loyal as he made sure he kept the promise he made to his friend Red. Andy has high external as he is educated and had a high position in a bank. On the other hand, Red has been in prison for his entire adult life which resulted in a change of personal system. He doesn’t think of life after prison. He has been “institutionalized “. He has become dependent on the required system that he doesn’t think he can survive after prison. The word institutionalized as described by Red is the process by which prisoners first hate the prison then gets used to it that finally, even their lives depend on it. (Movie). Red is also the guy that can get you anything. He sells “cigarettes, a bag of resources and a bottle of brandy” which resulted in high power and respect from his inmates. He values the life he has in prison than anything else. I believe this is because it has been a long time since he was out to see the world. He has already adjusted his behavior and way of life in regards to the required system of the prison. The rest of the prisoner’s personal system lies between these two.
