1. How does this movie convey the message of redemption? (Give scenes, dialogue to back up your statements)

The movie shows redemption because even though Andy was wrongfully sent to prison he stayed hopeful and eventually got out after lots of hard work. He used hope and used his skills that he acquired in the outside world in prison. He used this to make friends and be an asset to the warden so he stayed safe in prison and devised a plan to escape and tell the outside world about the prisons corruption.

2. What scene in The Shawshank Redemption was the most meaningful for you? Why?

The most meaningful scene for me in Shawshank was when Andy first escaped from prison and after he crawled out of the pipe. The camera cut to a frame of Andy staring up into the rain and opened his arms as if to say that he is finally free. He finally has his redemption after 20 years. He was patient and worked hard and wisely for 20 years to escape and when the day finally came he was ready.

3. Throughout the film, there are several instances of guard brutality. Do you think this still happens? Is some physical form of punishment acceptable? Why/ Why not?

When this movie was set racism in America was common and the fact that Andy be friended Red shows he is a nice person. Andy did not stereotype Red when he came to prison and he is not a remorseless man like what the judge called him in court. One of the stereotypes regarding African Americans is that they are all criminals and thugs. Red is a guilty criminal but from the very start of the movie the audience instantly likes his character and does not regard his as a murderer.
