Shelia Johnson has long been a powerful influence in the entertainment industry, starting with her work as founding partner of Black Entertainment Television (BET). She has served as executive producer for documentaries and a feature films. Ms. Johnson is founder and chair of the Middleburg Film Festival, an annual celebration of independent film. As Founder and CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, Ms. Johnson currently oversees a growing portfolio of luxury properties in Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana. As stated in the text book,” how an individual approaches problems or learns from new experiences is related to the open-to-experience dimension” (Dalglish & Miller, 2010). I feel Shelia is imaginative, creative, and has a broad range of interest.
Cognitive Style: I believe that the cognitive style that is Shelia utilizes is the feeling strategy. I feel that she tends to be aware of others feelings, manages and or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goals, and can relate to others. For example, Johnson strives to connect with the young employees within her business ventures, including the sports teams. Emotional intelligence consist of these five attributes self-awareness, self-management, empathy, relationship management, and effective communication. I believe the aspect of emotional intelligence that Shelia Johnson most frequently demonstrates are the act of knowing and understanding how to be leader. For example she runs several businesses, oversee projects, all while being a mother, business partner even with going a through one of the most publicized divorce settlements, due to professional and personal differences and after 20 years of marriage; but not allowing it to ruin her lifestyle, her business mindset or shatter her goals.
