The forms of entertainment we have today represent more than just the superficial elements portrayed for our enjoyment. Any embodiment of literature is merely a reflection of a society’s identity. Through the use of violence and companionship, Guy Ritchie, the director of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, created a distinct plot line that catered to the 21st century values and entertainment; this established a distinction between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel, Sherlock Holmes, because the novel depicted a representation of the Victorian Era’s beliefs, which differ to those in the 21st century.
In Doyle’s novel, Sherlock Holmes was “the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen,” (Doyle 1). He used rationale to
Erick Larson wrote in Devil in the White City, “I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing – I was born with the Evil One standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered in the world, and he has been with me since” (Troy, Taylor). This statement was a quoted confession from Dr. H. H. Holmes himself in 1896. Holmes was the first major serial killer in America, even though he came after many others in his time. Thomas Neil Cream, the Austin Axe Murderer, the Bloody Benders, and Jack the Ripper came before him. His name was originally Herman Webster Mudgett. He was born on May 16th, 1860 in Gilman, New Hampshire. He was raised by his mother
Ralph Ellison wrote during the Contemporary literature period. Contemporary literature is literature associated after World War II. The madness of the war-torn world was a condition that couldn't be escaped in modern life, and the only appropriate response was laughter at life's tragic ironies. The term used to describe the work of writers who flourished after WWII was "gallows humor". During this period, science and technology increased the life spans of people and have better fed and housed many people.

Sherlock Holmes is a literary figure that has withstood time. He has been written and re-written, brought to life in film, and portrayed on television shows. Holmes has changed with society, aging as if he was not fictional, but as if he was very much alive. As people in American society become desensitized to violence and crave gore, Sherlock Holmes has been forced to adapt to meet the ever-changing demands made by society over the content they consume.
Pre-internet, fan culture exclusively referred to science fiction or comic books and was considered a disdainful hobby, conjuring the image of an overweight middle-aged man spotted with day old pizza stains watching Star Trek(ITALICS) reruns for the umpteenth time. Conventions were less advertised, attended, and accepted as a room of costumed geeks that needed to “get a life”.(.”) Grey areas of fan culture were less apparent; either a person had a slight interest in and enjoyed a piece or it became their identity. Society squished all types of fans into this single mold without stopping to think of the intelligence and creativity of individuals or the power they wielded. It was never considered that riots over sports results or the Super Bowl were a much more violent form of fan culture, or that concerts and musical festivals were made entirely of fans. Even as early as 1893, when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed London’s beloved Sherlock Holmes, fans took the streets with black armbands and dropped their 20,000 subscriptions to the publishing magazine, literally bringing their hero back from the dead by sheer popular demand. However, because sports, music, and magazines were popular, these even aggressive acts never fell under the period definition and were just passionate people, never
Sherlock Holmes and Dupin are both very good detectives, however they both have their merits and disadvantages. In this essay I will argue that Sherlock Holmes makes a better Detective than Dupin. Dupin is arrogant, selfish, and imaginative, while Sherlock Holmes is Selfless, Confident, and he is also imaginative like Dupin, but he does not let that imagination interfere with is work. Even though Dupin and Sherlock Holmes both have merit with imagination, Sherlocks ability to not let his imagination interfere with his work and his selflessness makes him a better detective, even though he may not always get his case right.
There are many sub-genres of detective fiction and hard-boiled fiction is one of them. What exactly is hard-boiled detective fiction? Hard-Boiled detective fiction is fiction that features tough, cynical, urban private eyes who expose corruption and frequently get injured in the course of their investigations ("Detective Fiction," Literary).
On the eve of November 8th, 2016, secretary of the Democratic Party Hillary Clinton or politician of the Republican Party Donald Trump will become president of the United States. With their dividing views, it splits the nation in half with their ideals and plans for the future. This election is what brings out the true form of freedom of speech in America-polarization between the Democrats and the Republicans. Not only does this election bring out the significance of how important it is to vote, but also what kind of leader people want to lead for the next four years. The vision of America 's future could possibly be at stake depending on who comes out as the winner in less than a week. Power will be given to either Clinton or Trump, and that is what will determine the outcome of the fates for everyone residing in the Unites States for the next four years.
Throughout every original investigative tale, Sherlock Holmes solved his mysteries based on deductive reasoning. He quickly established his tactics in A Scandal in Bohemia, by stating that he had “both seen and observed” his surroundings (Doyle 3). His partner, Dr. John H. Watson, described his techniques as “subtle methods by which he disentangles the most inextricable mysteries” (9).
The planetarium experience definitely opened my eyes in seeing what I may not ever get to see in person, but many that have looked into it for thousands of years. Sherlock in the end is the ultimate explorer because he investigates and imagines what I think is utterly horrifying and disturbing scenes to help others. Finding killers and criminals are his thing and that is what he does to visualize the possibilities of these crime scenes that could have led to their outcome. From the railroad to Sherlock, all of these tied come down together in history. For as long as I can remember the art of investigation, space, and transportation are all a part of our lives and have been for many years that and will only get better as time goes on.
The most prevalent theme of this book is superstition in the face of logic. Throughout the novel the logician, Sherlock Holmes, is faced with something quite the opposite of logic: a supernatural hound. The reader can see in many places that the supernatural beliefs of the townsfolk and neighbours of the Hall swayed the reasoning of those trying to unravel the layers of mystery surrounding the investigation.
“How do you people watch this?!?! ” and “Why do everyone in this room have this intense love for horror movies was two phrases that I heard one night at my friend’s house while we watched Jason killed his 3rd victim on Friday the 13th. “Horror is defined as being a strong aversion mingled with dread” stated by Patrick Johnson in his paper, “The Importance of Horror”. Just like Graff’s essay on “Hidden Intellectualism”, there is a hidden value in horror films and books. Horror has played a large part in the human race and it has existed ever since the 1700s. From the Devil’s Castle in 1896 to Ouija: Origin of Evil in 2016, horror films have been around for a long period time and they are not going to go away no time soon. Furthermore, Graff states that “nor do we consider one of the major reasons why schools and colleges overlook the intellectual potential of street smarts” (957). In a like manner, we could say that people overlook the value of horror films and books. First, finding the value of horror flicks and books. Second, why do people value horror flicks and books? Last, how do horror films and books have value. When you analyze horror movies from the past and compare them to the ones, they all have one common trait, which is that they have some type of value to people.
Ian Fleming created a character who became a nation wide rave. Ian Fleming had no idea the impact his books would have. The instant success of his series and rise to the top as a top author.
Since the 20th century, literature has competed with television as another form of popular entertainment, and this affects the desires
Have you ever met anyone that knew you belonged in your life, no matter what? That’s who Tyler Davis is to me. He is the love of my life, my other (he would say better) half, and my absolute best friend. The way we met, to some, was unconventional, but to me, it was fate.
