For this project there was an opportunity for me to interview anybody on the topics of intersectionality and gender discrimination that happens in peoples workplace. I choose my roommate Ria who is 24 years old which is more in the younger side to people might seem as she will not have many encounters with the topics mentioned. Racial discrimination continues to be a prominent problem in today’s society. It has been prohibited federally since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (title VII). Despite being a law for over 50 years, major companies continue to have issues with racial discrimination. In fact, the most common type of discrimination employees report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is racial discrimination. The U.S. EEOC enforces all of these laws. EEOC also provides oversight and coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations, practices, and policies. The problem that Denny’s had with discrimination was that the black individuals were not being treated equally as the white ones. Two different lawsuits were talked about in this unit, one was about an employee that was being harassed by fellow employees and once it was brought forth to the manager they just ignored it, and the other as a group of people that were not being treated equally while being served. Denny’s corrected these issues with having better training for the managers when it comes to having employees harassed under their business. Denny’s also tried to hire a more diverse group of employees to help run the business. Abstract- Racial discrimination happens all the time and most of us are unaware of it. The most common place for this to happen is in the workplace. Now people can be discriminated against because of their race, religion, or any other numerous things. Also, discrimination can occur during the job interview or even after you got the job. This paper will shoe the effects of racial discrimination and how it can be prevented. In addition there are some very important laws that deal specifically with discrimination, like the NAACP or Affirmative Action. These both will be discussed.
With all of the advances in modern society and human behavior, racism is still a crisis that many people have to cope with. It can occur at any place or at any time, including in the workplace. Racial discrimination arises when someone is treated differently based on their actual or perceived race. Many people believe that if one were to be in the vicinity of a respected workplace that they would be respected by all co-workers and employers; this is in no way true. A big amount of minority employees, mainly African-Americans, are affected by racial discrimination in the workplace whether it’s from their employers or their fellow co-workers, and it is not at all acceptable. Racial discrimination is a situation that has always been a problem, so we must show an effort to try to eliminate it from our society.
A service company that was contracted by Air Jamaica to handle baggage and cargo for the airline, the owners of this company were transactional, they didn’t believe in empowering workers, as a matter of fact they made it quite clear that it as there way or the high way, and they would regularly fire whole shifts and teams of workers, to get rid of one trouble maker, the message became clearly emblazoned in my mind do not rock the boat, don’t speak out in meetings especially when they ask for your opinion.
Since the end of the segregation with the Civil Rights Movement, many believed that racism in the United States had come to an end. However, there are still many instances where racial inequality still occurs, and this is especially prevalent in the workplace. Although this sort of discrimination is illegal, individuals cannot always be prosecuted for this crime because it often happens in subtle manners that are not easy to prove. Regardless, every person, no matter the color of their skin, has the inherent right to be treated with fairness and equality, especially when dealing with matters in the corporate world.
