Whitworth Pirate softball started their weekend in California with a doubleheader sweep of the California Lutheran Regals on Thursday afternoon.

In a particularly small small town in Kansas you could hear the crack of a baseball bat connecting with the ball, if you followed the sound you would find a small worn baseball field that has been used for ages being used by 13 boys and girls. The team didn’t have any leagues to play in or any other teams for the next 100 miles so every day they met and one player batted while the rest fielded. They called themselves the “Loners”

The National Congressional Baseball Game has been a cheap and fun event since 1909 to raise money for worthy and effective charities in Washington D.C. Members of the Senate and the House are invited to play a friendly baseball game, but not everyone is required to play. With the financial support of Wrigley, the original All-American Girls Softball League emerged and was a non profit organization. The board had changed the name to All American Girls Baseball League instead of softball. The way that the girls were presented was of high priority and they had to keep their femininity by going to a beauty salon. Before we told our daughters that they could be anyone, or anything they wanted to be, we told them that they could only be what was acceptable for women to be, and that they could only do things that were considered "ladylike." It was at this time, when the nation was frenzied with the business of war, that the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League decided that they could do and be whatever it was that they chose. Medicine is a career filled with many choices but it’s the fate of a person which shapes one’s goal in life by the hurdles it throws one’s way. Like most of my colleagues, I entered Medical School uncertain of specialty choice. Internal medicine is the field that I practiced early on in my career, but the field of Psychiatry always fascinated me and a traumatic personal experience forced me to realize this fact, that this interest in Psychiatry is something which I already had in my instinct.
