After watching the movie “The Shock Doctrine” and reading the article “Blank is Beautiful: Three Decades of Erasing and Remaking the World” my view point of globalization and capitalism totally changed. I personally did not like the way people in command used people in crisis for their own advantage and naming it as “Shock Therapy” to improve the society. Where the therapy only worked for the wealthy and people at higher position and the rest of the innocent people had to suffer because of them. “The Shock Doctrine” thesis was that what happens when we loss of narrative and instead of saving what’s left they destroyed and tried to generate a new society. Milton Friedman played a huge role in this because it was his ideas which lead
In times of distress, people will tend to be more easily influenced, corrupt government officials often take advantage of this aspect of American society to boost otherwise unpopular neoliberal reforms. This phenomenon is called Shock therapy an example of which would include the signing of the Patriot Act following the disaster of the world trade center on September 11, 2001. The U.S was in mass disorientation as corrupt government officials used this to promote the privatization of government programs that were under the supervision of the Department of Homeland Security. This disaster was used as a way to stimulate the privatization of many government regulated sectors, however the most affected was homeland security. Through the use of public dismay of terrorism, the market for security

The hospital had a variety of treatment methods such as, drug therapy, electric shock, psychosurgery, and group therapy. Drug therapy includes medication given to treat patients with psychological disorders (Nevid 83). This therapy was presented in the movie as all the patients lining up to take their medicine in little cups. McMurphy was given a pill after one day of being there and was told that it was good for him. If the doctors did not know his disorder, drugs should not have been given to him.

The definition is excellent in describing the system that is present today. Friedman pointed out that markets around the globe become intertwined into one web of connectivity, where one company in North America can easily interact and do business with an individual in Asia, and create profits. However, the inter-connectivity I believe in has more to it. Going beyond what Friedman stated, I argue that the globalization of world markets not only helps the existing large financial centers of the world, but also smaller, and often times, newer markets. While I do not agree with the outsourcing of jobs, the factories moved to lower wage countries is a benefit to people working, and living there. It offers employment, and a life to the workers that they would have never had if the factories were never sent there. It helps the poorer nations in developing an economy, and become part of the global market. Friedman said that Supermarkets can destroy nations (473), but its power could also aid the poorer nations to grow and even maybe, join the global
By not discussing the state of our middle class at home, Friedman effectively neglects the most pressing concern for a majority of Americans. Aspects of this discussion can certainly be inferred from the reading, but the lack of explicit conversation suggests the author is more interested in representing the optimistic view of globalization. He is clearly aware of the downsides, but in many respects, allows the reader to put the pieces together for themselves.
The term the Shock Doctrine was created by journalist Naomi Klein in her book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism which refers to the idea that economic liberalists formed an entire industry take advantage of disasters such as natural disasters or military coups and privatize everything they can get their hands on. The name of this industry is the Disaster Capitalism Complex and it is comprised of the corporations and organizations that see recently shocked areas as ripe for the emplacement of economically liberal policies and institutions. The term originated from an experiment that was funded, in part, by the CIA and took place in Canada where a doctor tested many different methods of shocking people such as electrodes,
Most contemporary psychological treatment approaches are predecessors of the ancient and medieval philosophies and theories. Cognitive behavioural therapy as one of the modern treatment method in not an independently formed treatment, different theories have contributed to its present shape and application.
The novel, The Shock Doctrine, by Naomi Klein consists twenty one chapters divided into seven parts. The novel also includes an introduction and a conclusion. The author could have potentially chosen this topic because she was curious of the correlation between original shock therapy and Milton Friedman’s economic shock theory. The topic, indefinitely interested Klein, as she felt the inclination to conduct further research and see where Friedman’s theory had actually taken place within the world. Her research came up successful, with her finding numerous cases, which were outlined in her book, where economic shock theory has been applied to Poland, South Africa, and Russia during the 1997 financial crisis.
In my daily schedule, I like to find a moment for myself where I am able to read a book. My first choice is usually a novel and I read for both class and personal enjoyment because they mean reading a book that I usually like. There are many specific genres or types of books that I prefer over others and there are also some novels that I could read on a repeated basis. The parts about reading a novel which I find the most challenging are finding the book that interests you and keeps you engaged. There are a wide variety of books out there, but there is only a certain book that a person looks for, and if you don’t find that book, you may not be able to read a book that you don’t prefer. The reader will then leave it and not read the book completely or with much
The rise of globalization following WWII generated three important factors that define today’s world. McNeill and McNeill agree with Pollard, Rosenberg, and Tignor that multiple economic changes, such as the creation of financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) contributed to the globalization of the world economy. Carter and Warren further this argument by claiming that globalization has caused shifts in the modern economy, namely the rise of Asian economic powers. However, all three historians agree that the rise of globalization goes hand in hand with the rise of inequality in today’s world. Gaps in power, wealth, and access to information have only widened due to the trend of globalization. The final key factor defining our world today are the ongoing processes affecting development countries. McNeill and McNeill argue similarly to Carter and Warren that the end of imperialism generated new nations who quickly realized the free market was a pathway to stability. However, Pollard et al. and McNeill and McNeill place importance on financial institutions like the IMF forcing developing nations to reform their economies to be subservient to the world’s economy. Together, these historians argue that the trend of globalization following WWII caused factors like the modern global economy, the rise in inequality, and the development of new, decolonized nations to be key determiners in the world today.
With this recreated vision, the concept of therapeutic communities surfaced and it described a involved , group-based approach to long-term mental illness, personality disorders and drug addiction. This group-based approach is typically in a residential setting with the patients and care workers living together. Currently, milieu therapy has three goals and the first goal is the manipulation of the environment so that all aspects of client's hospital experience are considered therapeutic, the second goal is expecting the client to learn adaptive coping, interaction and relationship skills that can be generalized to other aspects of his or her life and the third goal is achieving client autonomy (Nurses' Role in Milieu Therapy, 2013).
