Spiritual gifts are “gifts of God enabling the Christians to perform his or her…services in church” (Elwell, 2001, pg.1135). Spiritual gifts are given by God to help complete His work here on earth and also glorify His name. When we are chosen to by God to receive these spiritual gifts, He expects us to use those gifts in fulfilling His commission, building up the churches, and giving back to Him. In hopes of the devil not being able to disrupt or hear our prayers. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is when the Holy Spirit blesses someone with his presence after they have been saved. It is a very emotional experience in which the person ‘feels’ the presence of the Holy Spirit. A biblical evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is in second chapter of Acts where the disciples were sitting together in the upper room and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Speaking in tongues is one of the things that happens when the Holy Spirit has baptizes us; it shows the presence of God is with the person. Speaking in tongues is not a necessary sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit in my opinion, although it did happened to the disciples when they got baptized with the Holy Spirit. The gift of speaking in tongues does not really mean that the Holy Spirit baptizes one. It truly is one of the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives, but it is not the only gift that appears once someone has been baptized. I believe that the “speaking in tongues” is valid still today because the bible speaks on it and doesn’t state that we shouldn’t speak in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:5 states, “I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than who speaks with tongues…” (New King James Version).
