Throughout the entirety of my story, I touch on topics discussed/read about in class. My story is a description of not only my journey to Machu Picchu, but my journey to self discovery and patience. The story suggests a struggle throughout the entirety of the journey. The idea of leaving the comfortable in order to experience a spiritual journey is a topic which we discussed in class. For a transformation to occur during a spiritual journey, one must leave the comfortable aspects of life, and be willing to enter the unknown, which I did. My story of the spiritual journey that I experienced includes all the qualities of a mystical or spiritual experience. William James claims that the four qualities of a mystical experience are: ineffable, noetic, transient, and passive/receptive. When attempting to explain the type of transformation I experienced, it is difficult to put to words (ineffable). During my journey, I experienced a sense of revelation in terms of myself and my new founded inner peace (noetic). My experience was fairly quick; just in the span of a few days (transient). Lastly, in the moment where I sat at the edge of the rocks and pondered, the experience took hold of me and was driving my thoughts (passive/receptive). All aspects of my experience touch on James’ qualities of such an experience, as we have discussed in class. Lastly, my experience can be tied to Jung’s theory of the conscious (horizontal dimension) and unconscious (vertical dimension) state of mind. The horizontal plane is the awake state of mind in which we live everyday; this is tied to working, studying, starting a family, and eventual death. The vertical plane is considered the spiritual and magical realm; dreams, peak/spiritual experiences, and creative flow exist here.
