The doorknob had rattled to my isolation room in the mental hospital and a pretty, little nurse walked in with a platter of food. The food looked so revolting, it wouldn’t have surprised me if it moved.
“After breakfast we need to put you back in your straight jacket. It would help if you were cooperative, Edgar,” the nurse pleaded. By the tone in her voice and the look of her face, she had not slept the night before.
“ We will see. If I do that means I would be giving into the people who think I am bonkers!” I replied sharply.
“ I won’t be one attending to you anymore. It will be one of the other nurses. They might not be as nice as me, but you will just have to deal with it.” She screamed as she slammed down the food to a point where

My name ‘ith’ Ava. I am the new ‘nurth’ that ‘ith’ going to ‘athith’ you from now on.” She apparently saw the look of surprise on my face because the next thing she said was, “I have a “lithp”. It affects the way I talk. I ‘wath’ born with it.”
Still so surprised, I just nodded my head. She seemed really familiar to me, like I had a connection with her. Ava left before I could utter another sound. With that, I drifted back to sleep.
The next morning Ava quietly slipped in the lonely room. The smell of freshly cooked eggs and bacon awoke me.
“I ‘thliped’ this in for you, I thought you might want ‘thome’ actual food for once.” Ava offered.
My eyes were as wide as saucers. I had not had a real meal in weeks. Ava sat there patiently as I scarfed down the breakfast.
“Gueth’ what I found out ‘yethterday’ before I left to go home.” Ava said with excitement in her voice.
“What would that be, dear.” I said with my mouth full of food.
“ You're my brother! I think that ‘ith’ ‘tho’ exciting!” Ava said, releasing all that excitement and energy into the empty room.
I knew that was why I have felt a connection with her. I wasn’t crazy about that. “That is exciting. How old are you?” I replied fake matching her excitement.
“I am nineteen, how old are you?” She replied a little calmer.
“I am thirty-two.” I answered.
“I really ‘thould’ be going they will ‘thart’ to wonder where I am. I will ‘thee’ you
“I’m Catherine.” I did not say much else. So much was going on around me, and there were so many strange people; I felt much more comfortable as an observer.
“Yes, I was quite surprised to receive the message from Thomas; however, as much as I would love to travel abroad, rub elbows with the Queen and gallivant around Western Europe with you, I can’t go Allie.”
“Hi Alexis.” She said looking down at me “Um, there’s nothing really going on right now, or at least not a lot of fun stuff. You might want to stay in there, I would have liked to stay in there, to be honest. Your sister was skipping in here for about ten minutes straight.
Ruthie ran down the stairs and quickly ate her breakfast. She had toast, pink applesauce, and a poached egg.
“I’m Y/N. Thank you. For, you know.” She laughed; it was a beautiful laugh that I almost forgot to respond again.
How could I have slept so long? I yawned big, rolled out of bed, and opened my door. The house sounded empty.
He stiffened, “I’d really rather not. Did you not like them?” he wouldn’t look at me. He pushed the bacon around in the skillet.
Lydia awoke in an unfamiliar place. She touched her head but immediately pulled it away when she felt the soft texture of bandages on her forehead. She shivered as a small draft passed over her skin. She looked down and noticed... She was wearing barely anything. She panicked, scrambling to wrap the blanket around her body.
“I’ll have 6 eggs, a big glass of orange juice, a banana, and some oatmeal please” said DeSean “ You’re one crazy kid” said the female bartender at IHop. “Yes ma’am, I might be crazy ,but ready for football this morning” DeSean responded swiftly. The bartender responded almost immediately saying “Damn right, hope you do well this morning, I’ll have that food out real quick honey”. DeSean waited for less than 5 minutes before chowing down on over 1000 calories. He exchanged some words with the bartender and he was off to football.
“Wait, what’s happening?” she asked. The man in the tuxedo left, leaving the nurse in there with her.
“Ava?” Ethan spoke, waking me up from a lifetime of daydreams. “Did you hear me?”
‘I am tired. Tired of being told to stay positive. I just want to go to sleep and never wake up.’ She tugged at the sleeves of her jumper. I could see she had made a little hole.
She peered at me over her glasses for a minute. Then she sat back in her chair
her voice was soft and feminine, like listening to mother speak to a small child.
Ava nodded at him. Ethan’s voice shook when he said “Why not let’s go, and check this out… it should be fun.”
