Some people do not believe in karma even though everyone knows that what goes up must come down. This introduces the story written by Zora Neale Hurston, for her short story Spunk, which is a base of the actual character’s first name. This tale is about a man who appeared to be fearless and overconfident, but later suffered from the consequences of his own ego. Spunk is a self-absorbed protagonist character and he is described to be a southern tall dark-skinned man who is not afraid of anything and has a way with women. He is also known in the little town as a bold man by the way he wildly approaches the running sawmill that recently killed its operator. But besides all the other reputation he holds, Spunk is also an insensitive, arrogant, and superstitious person.
Spunk shows his insensitivity and self-centeredness by pursuing a beautiful married woman named Lena. He did not bother to wait and allow the married couple to discuss their separation before he begins being romantically involved with her. But instead, Spunk didn’t care if he hurt a person such as Lena’s husband, or what might other people think about his actions. As the lover Spunk and Lena walk across the street holding hands pleasantly, the people there who are watching from the store can’t help but gossip and talk about their situation. Because in a small town everybody knows everyone literally and the residents mostly gather around and meet at the store. The store is obviously the place to catch up with
Zora Neale Hurston wrote the “Spunk” and published it in Harlem Renaissance journal in 1925. “Spunk” revolves around two main characters: Spunk Banks and Joe Kanty, who develop hatred between themselves due to a quarrel over a woman named Lena Kanty. Lena Kanty is Joe’s legitimate wife, later to be lured by Spunk Banks to abandon her legitimate husband. Spunk Banks successfully wins the love of Lena Kanty due to his heavy corporeal stature and military training. Spunk owns a .45 military hand gun, therefore, complicating attempts made by Kanty to fight for his wife. Kanty loses his life in the hands of Banks, when fighting for his wife and in the presence of his wife. Banks survives a court trial but a huge, black bob-cat in Joe’s ghost follows him afterwards in quest for vengeance for justice. Bank eventually finds his fate with a sawmill machine and succumbs to wounds sustained in this accident. Notably, both men die in the fight for a wife, where Kanty’s ghost kills Banks who previously takes the former’s life away (Hurston 105-111).
short story titled “Spunk” by Zora Neale Hurston about two men fighting for the woman that they love. Some stories end in happily ever after, but others end up in a tragic, like “Spunk”, one may say “fight for the person that you love”. In this story the two main characters are Spunk and Joe, they are both in love with the same woman, Lena. Spunk has a physical appearance that makes the village afraid of him, including Joe. Joe is married to Lena, but spunk want her as well. Joe was shot after he took someone’s advice that he should go after Lena, which he did and for that advice caused his death. Spunk though he won, but it was the other way around, thinking that he had Lena to himself he also found his death at the end of the story. Falling in love with someone that is already in a relationship usually results in different types of problems in the relationship like having affairs, destroying the relationship, someone getting injured, etc. In this story, Spunk and Joe have distinctive characteristics, yet they both were emotionally attracted towards Lena. Throughout the story, Spunk characteristics traits can be depicted as an unsociable, daring, and ambitious person.
Zora Neale Hurston’s use of language in her short story Spunk allows the reader to become part of the community in which this story takes place. The story is told from the point of view of the characters, and Hurston writes the dialogue in their broken English dialect. Although the language is somewhat difficult to understand initially, it adds to the mystique of the story. Spunk is a story about a man that steals another man’s wife, kills the woman’s husband and then he ends up dying from an accident at the saw mill. Spunk believed that it was Lena’s husband, Joe Kanty, who shoved him into the circular saw, and the people in the village agreed that Joe Kanty had come back to get revenge. The language used by the characters helps to
Leading many a hero astray with their good looks and sweet words, the seductress is one of the oldest and most common archetypes, and it is prevalently employed by Zora Neale Hurston in develop the themes in her stories. The enchantress archetype is used in “Spunk” to develop the subject of masculinity and power. In “Spunk”, the namesake character Spunk is a fearless man has found himself bewitched by the wife of Joe. He uses his manliness to make himself desirable towards her, saying "ah'll git the lumber foh owah house to-morrow... when youse inside don't forgit youse mine, an' let no other man git outa his place wid you!"(Hurston). Joe attempts to overcome his cowardice and attempts to establish dominance to win his wife back.

Zora Neale Hurston was born in 1901. She was raised in Eatonville, Florida. Zora went to Howard University and progressed on to Barnard College. Zora’s work reflected the use of African American legends in her short stories. Zora Hurston is a vital figure who composed stories and plays during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. She was committed to telling the stories of many cultures to allocate their social legacy with deference and love with an end goal to beat the unrefined stereotyping of the period. In 1925 during the Harlem Renaissance, Zora wrote a story called “Spunk”. In the story “Spunk”, Zora used the literary terms like character, setting, and
The short story, “Spunk”, written in 1920 by famous author, Zora Neale Hurston of Eatonville, FL, contains many characters but there’s only one that I find to be very amazing, Mr. Joe Kanty. A member of the Harlem Renaissance, author and folklorist, Zora Neale Hurston, constructed many of her works like: “The Gilded Six-Bits”, “Spunk”, and “Their Eyes were watching God,” during the Civil Rights movement to help fuel the setting and purpose of her stories. In the short story, “Spunk”, Mr. Joe’s characters’ transitions or changes to help portray the hero and bravery him. Three character traits that determine Joe’s behavior or inner self throughout the story relates from him being loving and fearful to him becoming revengeful.
Everybody in their life has made mistakes, but there is a difference between the small mistakes that people make on a daily basis, and those that can cause life-altering events. In the three Zora Neal Hurston stories, “Sweat,” “Spunk,” and “The Gilded Six Bit,” characters all make terrible mistakes that affect the people that they love most. The outcomes of each story though are very different as the characters face tough choices and deal with them in very different ways. Though these situations deal with many of the same issues, the ability or inability for those in the stories to forgive individuals shows their true character and values.

My story begins when my mom and I moved from Crafton, near Pittsburgh, to my grandparents’ house in Schwenksville at the beginning of first grade. In Crafton, there were not a lot children in my neighborhood; therefore, my wonderful mother and heart rending loneliness were my only friends. Fortunately, in my grandparent’s huge neighborhood, there were three amazing girls that became my best friends. However, those girls were not enough to combat my loneliness. At times these girls were mean to me, but my caring mother was there to lift my spirits. My mother was understanding and always knew what to say when I was lonely. As the story continues my life will hit an unexpected turn when I accepted a last minute invitation from a friend to attend
The short story Spunk by Zora Neal Hurston's depicted a deadly love triangle. A strong theme throughout the story was fear, although, the fear shifted from Joe to Lena to Spunk. Initially, Joe was fearful of Spunk, but Elijah toyed with his emotions and convinced him to go after spunk with a razor blade, forcing Spunk to kill Joe in an act of self-defense. Then, the fear shifted to Lena, she was devastated about witnessing the death of her husband, but not for long, in no time she was engaged to Spunk, her husband’s killer. It’s also important to mention that another major theme of this story was manliness, Spunk and Joe were constantly being contrasted. However, one day, Joe's manhood took a blow of its own—a bobcat showed up at his home and
Many events through the history began due to a boast, and a man too proud to take it back. Murders and wars, marriages and elections, hinged on the delicacy of a man's pride. So too with this story. This is the story of a gentleman born and bred (because where pride is concerned gentlemen are the worst offenders) with a silver spoon in his mouth and a gentleman who currently and had always resided in the gutters of society, yet was a gentleman all the same. This is the story of transformation. This is a story of how kindness can be cruel. This is a story about love.
“Of course they aren’t helping,” Adia groaned, slamming the door to Heron’s Hideaway shut. It was our last midnight patrol for the week of camp, and it was supposed to be easy. But how was cleaning an entire building with just the two of us easy?
Ready to step in for anyone at any time, Zendaya watches on the sideline cheering on her teammates. It is the sixth inning, tie game, and her best friend Nadia is up to bat. She hits the ball hard and gets a double. There is now two outs with Nadia on second. Can the cleanup batter do the job? She hits it to the fence, the ball bounces off the yellow, Nadia is heading home, but the throw is spot on. Nadia dives head first into home plate in hopes that she would be safe and add a run to the score board. When she dove head first into the plate, all she could see was the catcher blocking the plate and a cloud of dust. There was no going around her. She managed to get a finger on the plate before the catcher got the tag on her. The catcher
I clutch my Ka-Bar tightly in my fist, my knuckles turning white. Even though I am talking to a “friendly”, my combat training has coached me to trust no one. Our conversation carries on, but I am acutely aware of the way he observes me. For an instant, his mahogany eyes seemed permeated with disgust. My grip shifts tighter around my weapon. Before I could react, the “friendly” had me rotated around; his own knife striving to slice my jugular vein. The blade grazes my skin, it’s almost cool against my now flushed skin. At first, we struggle, but I am able to force him off my back due to my training. My Ka-Bar is directed and I am prepared to use it. Lord, forgive me, I thought. My hand moves swiftly and efficiently, cutting all over
