Splash! Tarah is playing in the ocean as the sun sets in beautiful Miami. She inhales the fresh ocean breeze as she looks over to see her mom laying out on the warm, sizzling sand. She feels the waves crashing against her as she remembers when she was little, playing on the beach with her mom and dad. She grew up in Chicago but had to leave at the age of 7, devastated to leave her friends and everything behind. The warm waters of Miami grew on her. Tragically, 3 weeks later her dad died in a car crash and she forgot everything. She surrounded herself in isolation blocking everyone out. She thought of Miami as a dark, small town. On October 1, she found hope and let people in. She saw the tall palm trees and felt the humid weather once …show more content…
Then, the smell of smoke and hot dogs hits her nose like a wrecking ball. Tarah comes back to shore, soaking wet. “Ok, honey, come up and dry off,” says Tarah’s mom in a rushed but calm tone. Tarah dries off, then throws her towel and sprints back in the water. “Tarah!” her mom yells in frustration. Tarah glances back and giggles. Then the duck appears again, like magic. Tarah follows the duck to an underwater cave. She looks around in confusion. “Where am I?” Tarah asks. “Hello, anyone there?” “Hi,” says an unknown voice. “Who’s there?” “Follow the lit up rocks,” says the unknown voice once again. Tarah follows the path, to only find a whole new world...underwater. “What am I doing here? What is this place?” Tarah asks in confusion. “This is your home, Tarah,” says the unknown voice. “No it’s not. I’ve never even seen this place before,” says Tarah “Can I at least see who you are?” - Tarah “Yes” - unknown voice “Woah! You’re the duck I was following,” Tarah exclaims. “Now you probably have a lot of questions and I don’t have a lot of time and you don’t either, so just ask some” - the duck “Yes I do.” -Tarah “How am I breathing?” -Tarah “Does my mom know about this place? Does anyone?” - Tarah “You are breathing because of your genetics,” says the duck. “My genetics? My mom is a normal human and my dad is dead.” -Tarah “Your dad had powers just like you and when he died the sea went dead. We need you to make it green again

On Holdens way home from school he begins to think about the ducks in the pond in Central Park again: “I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home. If it was where did the ducks go? Or did they just fly away?” (13). The ducks not only symbolize not a permanent change but they also symbolize Phoebe.
I don’t know why, but somehow the image of the white sands between her toes, the large palm trees hanging overhead, the cool ocean breeze, the whole tropical dream, always manages to make a smile on her face. This paradise, I imagine, must be the complete opposite at home, what with being the middle child of a younger brother, Jonathan, and an older step brother, Chandlier, two cats, two dogs, a bunny, and two tropical animals called sugar gliders. This girl, who I thought I could read like an open book, proved to be very surprising and one of the friendliest people I know.
“I was thinking about the lagoon...I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home, and if it was, where the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and frozen over. I wondered if some guy came in a truck and took them away too a zoo or something and they just flew away” (13).
When Holden is taking a cab to a hotel, he asks the cab driver if he “know[s] those ducks in [the] lagoon right near Central Park South?” and if “By any chance, [he] happen[s] to know where…the ducks [go] when it gets all frozen over?” (Salinger 60). Holden is frightened by change and disappearance, as he wants to continue being young. Holden is worried about where the ducks go because he is scared that he too will have to leave soon, since he must grow up and enter his life of adulthood. As Holden drunkenly walks the streets of New York, he finds “[the lagoon]…partly frozen and partly not frozen” and although he “walked all around the whole damn lake…[he] didn’t see a single duck” (Salinger 154). Holden desperately wants to find a duck still at the lake so that he could hold on to his hope that he doesn’t have to grow up. Instead, Holden finds the lake “partly frozen and partly not frozen”, which signifies the current state of the transition he’s in, between childhood and adulthood. The ducks in the lagoon symbolize that Holden cannot remain a child forever, and that he must accept change and no longer be afraid to grow
When Holden was taking a taxi he tried hard to make a connection with the driver. He was so desperate to make a connection he started talking about ducks. " The ducks. Do you know, by any chance?
Contradictory to the museum, the ducks are always changing, yet they still hold the same message of innocence and purity. Holden is very curious about the ducks, he is constantly wondering “where they go, the ducks, when [the lagoon] gets all frozen over,” (60). The ducks hold a deeper meaning for Holden because they represent the part of him that doesn’t know where to go or who he really is. The ducks represent change, which is something Holden struggles with and he is failing to grasp the concept of growing up.

Kaitlyn’s first time outside of her home state was in 2008. Her grandfather was the CEO of a grain and seed company, and would often go on business trips outside of Iowa. This time he brought Kaitlyn and her cousin Jill on a trip to Florida. This was the first time Kaitlyn had ever flew on a plane, and she was so nervous due to her fear of heights. Kaitlyn was able to persevere through the plane ride however, and visited Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and the
I pulled out of his driveway and got back on the highway. Soon I got to my apartment building and went to my floor, 21. From the glass-enclosed elevator, I could see everything. I could see the magnolia trees, ashes, beeches, and bald cypresses. Far away, I could see the gulf and the fisheries on the water. Florida's economy was growing rapidly, in terms of fish. (Fuson and Norrell; Muller and Irvin). Finally, the elevator warning bell rang and I got off. I walked down the carpeted hallway and I was at my apartment. There, I unlocked the door and walked in. The sun was down and the stars were up. I could see lights everywhere from the other homes and buildings. I walked into my room and fell into the bed. I could tell it was time for bed. I shut my eyes and dreamed sweet dreams. It was early in the evening, yet there I rest, the only peaceful part of the hectic Florida town
Once he gets to New York, he gets into a cab and gives his cab driver the address to his house because it was a habit. Holden finally gave the cab driver the right address and got all situated, he asks the cab driver the same question, “You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over? Do you happen to know, by any chance?”
I breathe in the warm air as I gaze out at my beautiful home. So wide I’m not even certain I’ve seen all it’s beauty that lies beneath. I can see the shadows of tiny fish swimming above the soft sand. They are so small they look as though they are microscopic. I reach down and run my hands through the wet substance that is so thick that my muscles grow tired the deeper my hand goes. As I lift my hand up, the sand makes a cloud of powder, slowly drifting through the water. The waters are so calm as though nothing could anger them. Each wave slowly rocking back and forth to the rhythm of the sea. I lower my fins beneath the water and a coolness rushes through me as I feel the cold, wet water. The soft breeze brushes against my skin with the scent of an indescribable satisfaction. Hours passed as the warmth of the sun seemed to just soak into my skin and relax my mind.
The sound of running feet crunching the snow could be heard. Panting and terrified screams drag through the day as each person is killed in cold blood. The Yeehat Natives howl at each kill they make in victory. Sounds of arrows being slinged and then silence.
To gaze into the light of who she was sent all the shadows chasing away. Tacts couldn’t hear the words that was coming from her lips. Yet it was no matter because this was the union he was hoping for. Her lips moved in time to their dancing and still the comprehension of her words slipped past his mind. What was she saying? Drum? Thrum? He leaned closer while struggling to stay in motion, in time, or was it in control.
