Joyce Carol Oates wrote the short story “where are you going, where have you been”. She introduced Connie who is a pretty girl and only fifteen years old to us and she doesn't like staying with her mom and older sister, but likes listening to music and watching movies. She spends a lot of time with her friends and staying at a drive-in restaurant. She’s crazy about boys and she tries to make herself look sexual. The climax of the story is that Arnold Friend asks Connie to go out for a ride and then threatens her with harming her family if she doesn’t comply them. At the end of the story, Connie agrees to go with them (Oates 1-8). This essay will discuss the teenager girl’s psychology and how parents communicate with teenage girls.

The story describes Connie’s father as “away at work most of the time” and he “did not bother talking much to them” Ultimately, Connie’s father does not pay an attention on Connie’s growing and he does not give much love to her either. that is why Connie wants male attention and love. Connie’s mother takes the responsibility to take care of everyone in the family, but she does not know how to communicate with Connie. She always yells at her, stuff like, "Stop gawking at yourself. Who are you? You think you're so pretty?" and "Why don't you keep your room clean like your sister? How've you got your hair fixed—what the hell stinks? Hair spray? You don't see your sister using that junk." Parents should not always force their children to do something but should listen to them instead. They should also spend more time with their children and try many other ways to talk with them. Teenagers are eager to become adults and have a strong sense of independence. If the parents often loudly reprimand them, not only hurt their feelings but it can cause their insecurity in adulthood. Don't scorn or ridicule the idea of teenagers, instead always ask for and respect their opinions. Connie’s parents should know more about teenager’s psychology. However, everyone knows from the story that Connie chose to go out with Arnold Friend and she had her reasons. She is not very happy at home and she wants to escape from home to a fantasy world. At first she struggles because she is afraid to die but she hates her old life. Also, she thinks with her leaving may save her family. From the psychology angle analysis, teenagers have begun to have their own views. They will consider people and certain things important, and they’ll have their own hobbies and interests. However, it will be with a heavy feeling, because their likes and dislikes, whether they are good or bad judgment they will be judged
