Abortion is viewed as a negative decision to some people, but in recent years with the advancements in technology and prenatal testing, selective abortion has started to become widely popular among the newer generations. It is a very controversial due to many people believing it is unethical and a poor decision. There are many logical reasons for a woman wanting an abortion for a child with a disability such as, getting raped, not being financially stable enough to give the child a good quality of life, and the disruption of families a child with a disability can cause (D.I. Bromage). I believe women should be able to do whatever they choose with their body and if they want an abortion, no matter how healthy or not the baby is, they should be able to go through with an abortion without backlash. Prenatal testing and selective abortion is a good option for many parents and future mothers of children with a disability. It is beneficial both financially and mentally for some parents. The amount of money spent on a child from birth to whenever they leave the house is astronomical and it is not ideal for some parents, especially if the child has a disability. With recent advancements in prenatal testing, it has become a very safe option that is becoming more accepted with the years that pass. The responsibility that comes with a child is a huge factor in deciding whether to go through with the pregnancy or not. It is usually a hard decision to have an abortion or not, but when
If medical tests have proven that the child will be born with severe handicaps that would greatly reduce the quality of life or endanger the fetus, the opportunity to terminate should be available. Allowing abortion because of fetal disability may actually benefit the child in the long run, by saving it from a life full of unnecessary complications. This, however, is a very controversial reason and is not generally accepted by many people due to moral reasons.
This entails, women should have the opportunity to decide if they want to go through the mental and physical exhaustion of having a baby with disabilities such as Down Syndrome or anencephaly, both of these diseases also cost a plethora of money, something not all families have. In conclusion, every one of these problems could have been solved with the access of safe abortion clinics. Mothers shouldn't go to the extent of a clothes hanger to have an abortion, be mentally traumatized from the pregnancy they do not want, and if parents don't want a disabled child that is their choice not to
Abortion is a horrible thing, weather the baby is going to have problems or not, it shouldn't be aloud. Every child should get a chance to live, Just because it may have Down syndrome or autism etc doesn't mean that it shouldn't get a go at life. Iceland is about to become the first country where no one with Down syndrome are born as 85% of their women are terminating the pregnancy. The CBS news website quoted that “Iceland has two people with Down syndrome born each year.” This
Living in a world set up and built for able bodied people, it’s difficult for a disabled person to be brought up and adapt to carry out even the most simplest of everyday tasks. Aborting a disabled foetus may not intentionally be biologically discriminating, but instead, weighing up the consequences of continuing with the pregnancy until the stage of giving birth, taking into account what life will be like for the foetus in the future.
While pro-abortion advocates stand by their justifications of the act, there are also arguments that support the contrary. Selective abortion based on congenital defects cannot be justified as it is an act of discrimination towards disabilities and deteriorates parents’ mental and physical health.
Abortion based on genetic deformities is wrong. Physical limitations do not make a person less human. The national down syndrome society states that, “people with Down syndrome live at home with their families and are active participants in the educational, vocational, social and recreational activities of the community. In an article by abortion pro-con, it states that, “People with Down syndrome are valued members of their families and their communities, contributing to society in a variety of ways.” Most women feel that children with disabilities would only bring sadness to their lives, but the truth is that children with physical limitations actually bring more joy to their lives.
Women who have abortions are also ones who have children they just have them at different points in their lifetime. Many people who have trouble saying abortion is a moral choice believe they realize that some people need it sometimes. 50% of people say abortion is murder. One-third of those people also think that abortions are sometimes necessary.“Only [the women] are in a position to determine whether or not she's able to prepare to take the strain involved increasing a severely handicapped child.Only 8% of women that find that their fetus diagnosed with Down's Syndrome want to keep the fetus. Though many women decide to abort fetuses what will be born with disabilities. We should not force abortions on women who decide to proceed her
Imagine a woman was raped and later became pregnant. Shouldn 't she have the right to abort the child or should she be forced to deliver? Put yourself in her shoes. Can you imagine the pain she might feel every time she looks at the child? Should she be forced to endure this? Women should be allowed to have abortions under circumstances such as these.
A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. This corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions per day” (“Abortions Worldwide this Year”). On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.
Abortion is a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. There are series of legal, moral and ethical issues which may arise about abortion. Most arguments about abortion are often focused on political insinuations and the legal aspect of such actions. Some frequently asked questions’ regarding the issue is if the practice should be outlawed and regarded as murder or should women have the right to practice it. For example, prior to becoming pregnant, some women feel that they would be able to choose the abortion option without trouble. However, even with reasons why having an abortion would be the best option, some women feel that this decision would not be right for them. On the other hand, some women have a strong belief that abortion is unethical prior to becoming pregnant.
Parents that once regarded selective abortion have changed their minds due to information and support. Ilse and Manfred Gotz (2006) discussed in their work the progress of science that may influence a couple to change their minds about selective abortion. Many couples have met adolescents and adults with the same disability as their unborn child’s. This provided evidence that these children live a fulfilling life with their disability, and gives hope to future parents. There are many children with disabilities that understand the significance of prenatal testing and that in many families a choice of life or death is often discussed. One family in particular has a 14 year old daughter with cystic fibrosis
Abortion is a very debatable topic all around the world. In the United States, people are nowhere near any settlement on the matter and have not come to an agreement for the foreseeable future. The topic of abortion brings up a debatable issue regarding prenatal testing. An ultrasound is a standard procedure where the fetus can be checked upon and evaluated. With this procedure, abnormalities of the fetus can be detected, so further testing can be done to determine the health of the fetus. Nevertheless, what if anomalies are detected and the fetus either has a chance of not surviving or will be born with severe disabilities? It is unethical to most individuals, but the decision to end a pregnancy should always be accessible to the woman even if their decision is simply because their child would be born with disabilities.
In 1973 the court case Roe V. Wade which was settled by the Supreme Court, made abortion legal up until the third trimester of a woman 's pregnancy. Abortion is a difficult subject to talk about because we live in a culture that has a mindset of, if one does not agree with us then they must not like us. People all over the United States either feel strongly against or in favor of abortions, which makes presenting our arguments even harder. Abortions may now be legal, but the act of killing an unborn fetus without a voice should be considered murder. Currently I am taking a child development class. I have had the privilege to learn about when life begins in the womb for an embryo which develops into a fetus and getting to know about how the
Do we have the right to force the mother to keep a baby solely because she may or may not have consented to participate in a sexual activity? Do we have the right to take away someone’s because she has the potential to have a baby? Women have the right to make the choice of abortion or not. Pro-choice advocates argues that abortion should be legalized without the influence of government or religion. The government should not have the right to make a women’s choice to abort her pregnancy. Some women may make the choice of abortion due to their age, financial stability, culture, and relationship stability. Other women may choose to abort their pregnancy due to a traumatizing or unhealthy situation such as; rape or life-threatening medical condition. When precautions are taken, accidents can and do happen. Condoms break. Diaphragms malfunction. Even hormonal contraceptives are not 100 percent effective (In Search of Common Ground on Abortion, pg. 53). More than three million American women become pregnant unintentionally every year, and the rate of unintended pregnancy is especially high among young unmarried women (In Search of Common Ground on Abortion, pg. 53) Abortion
Abortion has become a common argument topic in America; numerous individuals consider themselves pro-life and others pro-choice. Those who consider themselves pro-life oppose abortion, while those who are pro-choice advocate for abortion to be legalized. I believe that abortion should be illegal and that life should be recognized upon conception.
