Should Abortion Be Legal?

One of the first moral issues addressed by both sides of the abortion debate concerns a pregnant woman’s so-called natural “right” to make “reproductive choices.” (“The Rights of Pregnant Women”) Anti-abortion advocacy groups claim that “the only way to actually protect the mother’s rights will be by enforcing laws that secure her child’s right to life,” (“Argument 2”) whereas pro-abortion groups contend that these laws “create a dangerous precedent for wide-ranging government intrusion into the lives of all women.” (“The Rights”) With two fundamentally contrasting viewpoints at odds with each other, it is apparent that one of the core issues concurrent with abortion is a woman’s rights versus the rights of her unborn fetus.

Abortion has been a global controversial topic. The advancement of medicine can cure illness but also take away the future lives of others. The United States has taken this scientific case into politics since the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which made abortion a lawful policy. Previous presidents have outlawed and made constitutional the right to abort a child. Although many people disagree, others agree to the right of privacy.

In 1973, the US Supreme Court declared abortion a nationwide fundamental right through a trial called Roe vs. Wade and protected this right underneath the Fourteenth Amendment, more specifically, the right to privacy. A basic human right, especially one outlined by the Supreme Court, must never run at risk or threat chiefly because not everyone agrees with it. Under no circumstances should a pregnancy ever adjudge mandatory. A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.

Imagine a world where women are not allowed to get tattoos, eat fast food, or even paint their nails. That is what the world would look like if the government were to restrict people 's everyday personal choices. Even though many people would think that having all of those things restricted has nothing to do with abortion, that is not the case. Abortion is a personal choice and therefore should have no limits placed on it when it comes to women over 16 because it takes away their rights that were set in the Constitution. The federal or state government should not have the power to dictate what a valid reason is for a woman to get an abortion no matter how horrific it may seem; however, they should have a legal age to get an abortion because children are not capable of making adult decisions on their own. Instead of restricting adults, the government should give women who want an abortion substantial information about the procedure so they can make a rational decision based on fact, not emotion.
