Should Abortion Be Legal?

Among all the issues that have been fought for or against in the United States, abortion may be one of the most popular issues that Americans are passionate about. Abortion is defined as the removal of the embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy. Thousands of abortions take place every single day, and yet public opinion remains at a standstill as to whether or not abortion is ethical. Everyone holds different opinions on abortion. The proponents believe that it is the women’s private right to determine the future of the baby in her body. On the other hand, the opponents think a woman does not have the right to decide whether the person that she gives birth should live or die. They believe that life begins at conception. In fact, a person’s stance on the issue is often determined by how he views the fetus: a part of the mother’s body or as a human being. I am an opponent, and I believe abortion is murder. Also, abortion should not be legal because it harms women’s health, affects intimate relationship, and women do not have the right to decide the baby’s right to live or die.

Abortion, to some it is the murder of an innocent fetus with a heartbeat. To others it is considered an option to be freed from the responsibilities of parenthood. We all have different views that can be controversial to the opinions of others. Yet, there are proven facts and cases where making abortion illegal is the best decision. Propaganda for Prolife is everywhere, but is there enough to show the world how wrong abortion is? I believe there is not, yet there are some very emotional advertisements that can change your whole perspective. Abortion should be considered illegal because it is considered murder and can have severe consequences for woman, and there are other options to chose instead of abortion.

Out of the many reasons why abortion is wrong, is that it is considered brutal murder. In 1982, Ronald Reagan stated: "Simple morality dictates that unless and until someone can prove the unborn human is not alive, we must give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it is (alive). And, thus, it should be entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" (Unkown). You are taking a life and killing a human being. The baby is alive and not just some 'group of cells' as abortion doctors call them. You are painfully putting a human being to death. It is wrong to think someone has the power to end a life so harmfully. That is something that most criminals do not even have to suffer through. Are we (as human beings) really so stubborn and idiotic to evolve the death sentence so that rapist and murders do not feel pain when they die all because they are alive, yet when it comes to an unborn human it suddenly no longer matters? Thomas Jefferson stated the most fundamental principle of our developing nation when he wrote in the nation’s first document, the Declaration of Independence, that we were all created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights and that among these rights was life. Who should be able to take that right away simply because someone made a mistake and does not want to pay the consequences for their actions?

According to an article in Time, “The battle for abortion rights has become, in recent years, a losing war of attrition, … [and] lawmakers have steadily chipped away at women’s rights and women’s dignity.” Since the 1800s, the laws surrounding abortions have been debated, arguing whether conception provides the basis for life and therefore human rights, or whether the right to abortion lies solely with the mother. Another argument revolves around whether or not a woman has the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy or if she should carry it to term. Abortion must be a protected legal right because the decision lies with the mother, as described in the Fourteenth Amendment and interpreted in Roe v. Wade, since the embryo does not have protected rights and in order to maintain the fundamental right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” in the case of terminating an unwanted pregnancy.

Imagine a woman was raped and later became pregnant. Shouldn 't she have the right to abort the child or should she be forced to deliver? Put yourself in her shoes. Can you imagine the pain she might feel every time she looks at the child? Should she be forced to endure this? Women should be allowed to have abortions under circumstances such as these.

A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. This corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions per day” (“Abortions Worldwide this Year”). On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.

Abortion, as you all may know, is a really popular topic. There have long been many debates between the two groups, pro-life and pro-choice. People who are pro-life believe that part of the government’s job is to protect all forms of human life. Those who are pro-choice believe that every individual should have control over their own reproductive systems. Pro-life supporters strongly believe that even an undeveloped fetus has life; it is still growing and it needs to be protected. And this sounds reasonable. However, after doing more research on this topic, I believe abortion should remain legal. In this speech I will be explaining how making abortion illegal could lead to emotional instability, illegal abortions, and how it could violate a women’s right to choose.

When one hears the word ‘abortion’ a lot of emotions and mixed feelings come to mind. Abortion has been and always will be a topic of heated debate. Whether one is ‘pro-choice’ or ‘pro-life’ can depend on many different factors. One’s upbringing and religious views play a major role when it comes to supporting abortion or not. There are many reasons that a woman could be getting an abortion therefore people should not be quick to judge. If a woman feels like her life or the child’s life will not be suitable for survival, then she should be respected for her decision. A woman is responsible for her own body and the actions that occur to her own body. Therefore, abortion should be solely a woman’s choice.

Abortion is controversial in the United States; it seems impossible to have any accord or compromise on this topic because the views regarding it are so widely divergent. These views are based on whether people decide that priority should be given to treating women as rational beings and allowing them the autonomy to get an abortion or to enabling the development of a fetus. I believe that priority should be given to providing women with complete autonomy, but there are those who disagree, and act paternalistically toward women to ensure that a fetus fully develops.

Abortion is a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. There are series of legal, moral and ethical issues which may arise about abortion. Most arguments about abortion are often focused on political insinuations and the legal aspect of such actions. Some frequently asked questions’ regarding the issue is if the practice should be outlawed and regarded as murder or should women have the right to practice it. For example, prior to becoming pregnant, some women feel that they would be able to choose the abortion option without trouble. However, even with reasons why having an abortion would be the best option, some women feel that this decision would not be right for them. On the other hand, some women have a strong belief that abortion is unethical prior to becoming pregnant.

The struggle between knowing what is right and wrong when speaking about abortion is one that has been controversial for quite a long time. What gives someone the right to say if abortion should legal, while telling the other person there doing the wrong thing with their lives. The personal choice is being taken away from people and is largely an argument based on factors such as a person’s social wellbeing and religious background (BOLCE, L). Along with this “Factors other than social class and background and religiosity have been identified to be important in the structuring of opinion towards abortion, including political ideology, sex role orientation, and personal morality.” (BOLCE ,L) . Life is a journey. It starts in the womb. You start growing, getting facial features, fingers, toes, your heart is beating so fast. We all start so small, yet still are so significant, and at some point someone makes a decision for us. Abortion of adoption? How does one decide on whether to keep the baby or not? There are many pros and cons to each choice, but individuals get to weigh them out and make the decision for themselves.

This film focuses on southern states and all the difficulties that abortion clinics down there have to go through. It shows only two doctors, because there isn’t many doctors that work in these abortion clinics. TRAP laws are laws that are applied to abortion clinics, which are really only there to make it harder to get an abortion. They make the whole process longer, and try to scare these women by saying facts that really not just apply to abortions, but any pregnancy. These doctors have to see many women per week, and often travel to other states because of the lack of doctors. Many of the women don’t have enough money which could be a reason for them to want an abortion in the first place. However these clinics keep getting shut down. They showed a map of all the abortion clinics in Texas and there was a bit over ten, and now there is only around four. Four clinics is such a small number, for the population number in Texas. Many women can’t drive that far out, because of their full time jobs and other duties they might have. This seems to be intentional though, a lack of clinics means lower abortion rates. This isn’t the case though, women continue to have abortions but not in a safe environment. One of the doctors they show is a Christian, and also helps in the clinic. They often get protestors that are pro life outside the clinic and they always shame him. They bring up how he is obviously not Christian, and why he is doing what he is. These protestors are allowed

Abortion has become a common argument topic in America; numerous individuals consider themselves pro-life and others pro-choice. Those who consider themselves pro-life oppose abortion, while those who are pro-choice advocate for abortion to be legalized. I believe that abortion should be illegal and that life should be recognized upon conception.
