The use of alcohol in teens has been a major problem in recent years. There is a study show that alcohol is a strong factor which made people addicted “The past decade, alcohol expectancies have been shown to be powerful predictors of drinking and it is now believed that they act as a common pathway for the influence of more distal risk factors for alcohol abuse” (Houben, 2006). Throughout the years, one can see the growing amount of alcohol consumed by those who did not reach the age limit. While referring to the alcohol consumption by the individuals of high school age, it appears that they become addicted. Moreover, the range of the problem is even bigger because of much research shows that teenagers become addicted by age 13 to 14. Moreover, there was a study conducted of Columbia University that shows general alcohol consumption in correlation to the amount consumed by teenagers (Dosomething, n.d.). Namely, 11.4% of drinkers among the overall alcohol consumption are teenagers (Dosomething, n.d.). While looking at the number of overall consumed alcohol, another problem comes up. It appears that teenagers who are active alcohol consumers during their teen years also have a tendency to drink too much alcohol when they grew up. In other words, they might tend to alcohol abuse for no reason, just because they were used to drinking in their teenage years. Also, The statistics also show that people between 12 and 20 years claimed that they consumed alcohol in the recent 30

The article, “Alcohol can rewire the teenage brain,” starts by stating that more than 4,750 American kids aged 15 and younger, said they took their first drink of alcohol already. Kids who start drinking before the age of 15 are more likely to become alcoholics because they get addicted to the drug. The article also states that they are more likely to start binge drinking. A study conducted by Lorena Siqueira a pediatrician at the Florida International University and Nicklaus Children’s hospital in Miami, reported that, “When kids drink, they tend to do heavy drinking,” and that, “Their bodies are not ready to handle that kind of alcohol.” Teens think that alcohol will help them feel happier and better, but that is not true. Teens also drink
“According to the CDC, about 90% of all teen alcohol consumption occurs in the form of Binge Drinking, which experts say peaks at the age of nineteen.” (qtd by Listfield). Binge Drinking is the consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. The author, Emily Listfield, defines that the standard alcohol consumption over a two hour period is considered to be four beers for women and five beers for men. This has become a great distraction for college students nationwide and a major dilemma on college campuses. Nearly two hundred thousand students visit emergency rooms each year due to the abuse of alcohol, and more than one thousand seven hundred students die. In the article “ The Underage Drinking Epidemic”, Listfield identifies the problems that underage drinking can cause, the dangers that could happen, and four solutions on what parents can do to keep their kids from binge drinking.
Alcohol is usually sought after within the adolescent community and has been an issue among young people. On July 17th 1984, congress passed The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 which enforces the legal drinking age and purchasing of alcohol in the United States to be twenty-one. Since then, the debated idea of whether or not the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen has been an ongoing topic for decades. Alcoholism affects many people in the United States but promoting it at such young age would not be such a great idea for the youths in today’s society. The drinking age should not be lowered due to the fact that it poses many dangers in the lives of teenaegers especially brain damages, underage drinking has declined since 1984, enforcing alcohol among teenagers may cause an increase in drunk driving and deaths and most importantly, teenagers who start drinking at an early age are more than three times more likely to develop alcohol dependency later on in life than those who started at the legal age of 21 or later.
According to current statistics released by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, “In the United States in 2011, there were an estimated 25.1 million adolescents aged 12 to 17. In the past year, more than one quarter of adolescents drank alcohol, approximately one fifth used an illicit drug, and almost one eighth smoked cigarettes” ("A Day in the Life of American Adolescents," 2013, para. 1). Substance abuse is major problem amongst adolescents. Some are experimenting, but some adolescents may become dependent on a particular substance. If one becomes dependent on a substance as an adolescent it could be detrimental to their future health and success as an adult. Spear (2003) stated in an article titled Alcohol’s
One of my youth pastors told the teens at church on a Wednesday night, “Don’t start a habit in your younger years that is going to control the way you live your adult years .” Whenever I heard this statement, I thought of teens binge drinking in college. College drinking has become a major issue for people under the age of twenty- one. Binge drinking becomes addicting, especially for people under the age of twenty-one. Understanding the problem and consequences of binge drinking will help to show that lowering the drinking age will not help the problem.
The Public Health issue being discussed in this study is binge drinking as well as underage drinking. Binge drinking can be defined as the excess consumption of alcoholic beverages which is considered more than five drinks for men and more than four drinks for women. Several public health issues also arise from binge drinking itself such as, drunk driving and violence. Binge drinking especially while underage can affect health because it can affect the cognitive brain development which may have life long effects. Aside from affecting development binge drinking can put youth at risk for physical/ and or sexual assault and makes youth more vulnerable to engage in unprotected sex which can lead to the transmission of STDs or unwanted pregnancy. Binge drinking can also lead to death due to alcohol poisoning and
Binge drinking is defined as people drinking plenty of alcohol in a short period of time or get drunk (NHS, 2014). In other words, binge drinking is drinking alcohol lead blood alcohol concentration (BAC) equal to or over 0.08g/dL. Nearly 25 percent of teens drink alcohol because they think it is fun; however the problems it may bring are not so fun (Hyde 22). There over six times more teen deaths per year from alcohol than any other drug (O’Malley 30). Alcohol affects the body of teens as well as all of the developmental processes. A major issue of teens drinking is that it increases the chance of becoming an alcoholic in the future; which leads to lowered self-control, impaired judgment, and lowered inhibition (Heath 12). Alcohol can completely change the life of a teen from the time they start drinking till death. Alcohol affects so many aspects of a person’s life and once it does, it is so hard to get life back to normal. Alcohol effects teens by harming them
First off, alcohol addiction and abuse among teenagers today is a bigger problem than ever before. The root of the problem lies in the fact that the teens are so exposed to the culture of this day and age, leading them to where they have easy access to alcohol. For example, their parents may already be alcoholics, and it's merely a few bad decisions later which could cause the child to have a few drinks and cloud their judgement. This is a big problem because their young bodies have never encountered anything like alcohol before, so in turn, the body does not know how to process it, and therefore leads to their downfall. A publication released by the National Institute of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAA) suggests that by age 18, an astounding 60% of US teens would have had at least one drink. Moreover, according to the NIAA, youth between the ages of 12 and 20 will often binge drink as well.
Alcohol abuse in high school teens is very common . Three-fourths of high school seniors have experimented with alcohol, according to a report by the Fairfax, Va.-based Society for Prevention Research.(M. C. B 1) . 95% of the time high schoolers start drinking because of peer pressure . Also, males are likely to start drinking before females do .Teens that drink often are three times more likely to commit self-harm such as cutting or suicide attempts than teens that don’t drink. Adolescent drinking represents a significant problem in the United States (Doumas 1) . The Effects of Alcohol Abuse in High School teenagers are death, low academics, and health issues .
Alcohol is the leading drugs problems among the young adults. Several advertisement play a big role on making the alcohol the leading drug problem among the young adults. According to federal government's annual survey of drug use among eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders, more young people drink alcohol than smoke cigarettes and also approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die from alcohol related injuries. This should be a big wake up call for the community about the alcohol advertisement effect on the young adults which involves underage drinking. Other study also shows that people who starts drinking at the age of 15 is more likely to become dependent on the alcohol. These facts should create awareness in the
Did you know that over a third of young people engage in binge drinking or hazardous drinking? Alcohol use and misuse by teenagers seems to become a big problem, but what is the problem for that and what is encouraging the youth to drink? In this essay I want to find the reasons for all those problems.
Teenagers are America’s greatest natural resource, and they need to be protected from some of the evils that lurk in the world. Alcohol abuse among teenagers in the United States is a plague that is destroying the structure of American society.
Teenage binge drinking (consumption of five or more alcohol drinks in a row) has grown to be a serious problem in the United States. A report in 2009 from the Surgeon General’s office show alcohol consumption by teens start as early as 11 years of age for boys and 13 years of age for girls (Grant & Dawson, 1997). In the youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Report (2007), data results showed that over three million teenagers in grades 6 through 12 are alcoholics, and several million teens have serious health issues due to drinking. Further research conducted by the Harvard School of Public health (2006) show a direct correlation of automobile accidents, alcohol poisoning, poor academic performance. violence and
