Should Athletes Be Paid?

Are professional athletes overpaid? This topic has been argued for some time now. It is said that pro athletes are paid way too much money for playing a sport. On the other side, there are the ones that say that the money is fairly deserved because of their hard work to get to where they are. Should pro athletes ' salaries drop or stay as is? Do the top athletes deserve their pay?

The money that is used for paying professional athletes is being wasted. Instead of using it to pay players every time that they get a goal or shot, that money could be used to keep someone alive. According to Country Economy in 2011 the debt in Japan was 13,579,637. One of the highest paid team in major league baseball, the New York Yankees, earns 203,197,405 a year (The Score)! The team could pay off all of Japan’s debt in less than a year! Fair to say, it is a whole team, but one single player could pay off all of United States debt as well. According to The Score “Hiroki Kuroda makes 16 million dollars in a single year.” A whole countries debt! And yet look at how this money is wasted. According to World Food Programme “842 million people in the world do not have enough to eat.” If athlete’s weren’t paid so much these 842 million people would have something to eat, and would not die from starvation. Although Athletes entertain us all and provide us with something to look forward to, their paychecks are too big for what they do. There are millions of people who are injured in the military or have illnesses that need that money to help them recover ,but instead we give the money to people who entertain us.

All athletes will play to their best potential in college because they are awaiting the opportunities they may get after college. It is every athletes dream to get paid to play the sport they love and thrived in their whole life. College athletes do not necessarily need to be paid to play in college because they are paid in various ways and opportunities. As Brady, Berkowitz, and Upton report, the college experience for athletes is far superior to that of the regular student, in most cases, and athletes get to play on major television! They get tremendous opportunities, experiences, and chances and not to mention, most are getting a free or almost free education. The amount of advantages that student-athletes get compared to regular college students is ridiculous. So the continuing question is, should college athletes get a paycheck?

My opinion on this on this problem is that athletes should be paid because they work just as hard as all pro athletes. They deserve recognition for what they're doing. With the motivation to make this money they'll play harder and harder to collect their pay. You can get the most out of people if money is involved. They say money is the root of all evil but this can make money be the root success. More money being paid to them the more success they can have in their seasons.

Athletes are paid huge sums of money to play sports. First, the average Cubs player earned over 6 million dollars in 2012. Next, some MLB players will earn more in one game than the average American household makes in 10 years. Did you know that some professional athletes get paid up to ten million dollars? Yes, some athletes actually get paid as high as thirty million depending on the sport. Sometimes all of that money could just be bonuses. Most athletes get paid for insane reasons and most aren't just scoring. For example, most NFL players get paid for the merchandise or ticket sales! These players should get paid this much they worked hard to get there, most people can't do what they do, and people enjoy watching them play these sports.

There are many people who would say that athletes are paid so much because they are putting their bodies at risk by playing that sport so they need money for possible medical damages/expenses. But then, there are soldiers that put their lives on the line to protect the rights that Americans have and it even gives the chance for those athletes to play and risk their health (Lesko). For example, the number of people in the National Football League who have died by playing the game or practicing is ten, in comparison, the number of people who have died serving our country is 1.3 million, but even though there is more risk serving our country than playing a game they are paid a large amount less. For example, someone that plays a sport can have injuries like concussions and some other injuries that risk their health but a soldier could potentially have PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) from the war they went into that could affect them immensely or the men/women that go over seas could even be shot and either become injured or could even die from this. Soldiers also have to leave their families behind for sometimes a year or more to serve their country which can put an immense amount of stress on them and their families, while an athlete can stay home and see their family daily (Miksic). Some people complain that instead of making all this money that they should reduce ticket prices. Well if you ran a business and you could sell a product for 20 dollars compared to 10 dollars what would you do? I think most of you would probably charge what the market would bear. What I don't understand is that many of the same people who complain that athletes make too much money are those trying to get more money for either themselves or the working class. If an average Joe has the right to make as much money as possible how come the same can't be said for athletes? I realize that 30 thousand dollars is quite different than 30 million dollars, but the principle is still the same. Everybody should be paid what they are worth. If pro sports don't work out for the athletes they lack real world job skills.
