Hundreds of books are challenged every year around the United States. A tenth of these are actually censored from many people. Books should not be banned because everyone has the right to read what they want. Parents often monitor their children’s reading, therefore the books do not need to be completely taken away. An example of a book that should not be banned is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Even though The Catcher in the Rye is constantly being challenged for vulgar language and moral issues, it should not be banned, because despite these objections, this book has many life lessons and new perspectives to offer. The most common group of people to try and ban books are parents, but other groups include school districts, teachers, communities, and religious organizations. One of the main reasons why books are banned is because adults want to shield children from certain content. Some people think that some books are inappropriate for specific age groups, which is understandable. Others believe that some books go against what they are trying to teach their children, or that it will give them a wrong idea and cause them to rebell. Also, people may ban books if they feel offended by the content, or if it contradicts their personal religious or political beliefs. Overall people challenge and ban books because they feel offended or uncomfortable about the content, or because they think it is wrong. There is a process that has to be followed in order for people to
The act of book banning could prove beneficial to the society because it could keep the students and youth of our culture away from books with a bad influence or things that would not help them in any way, shape, or form. “If a book is deemed offensive, some may argued, that it is promoting ideas which can have a detrimental influence on individuals (often children) and on society as a whole” (Aliprandini, Sprague 2016). This quote proves that those who believe that book banning is a good idea have valid reasons to believe so. Although books should not be banned, there is solid evidence that proves otherwise.
The idea to ban certain books from schools and libraries is preposterous due to the manner in which the people trying to enforce these bans try to do so in. Banning books doesn’t help with the already present problem that our youth’s intelligence levels are already declining, and neither does allowing the freedom to all books. Banning certain books due to their constant use of inappropriate language, sexually explicit nature, and all around mature content has a respectfully reasonable reason to be inaccessible to younger audiences such as minors and teens; not young adults. The banning of books in libraries is outright inexcusable, unless the material is directly racist, subjective religious content, and all around hatred for a certain race or ethnicity; not if it’s used for fictional writing, in a softer manner mid you, to express the conflict in a story and/or to show real world problems, same go for non-fictional writing that expresses ideals in a manner of which isn’t disrespectful to other ideals and that do so in a manner of which isn’t so subjectively and deliberately showing hate for a certain race or ethnicity, especially
The problems with banned books has been a controversial issue between parents as well as adults. The concerns that parents have are with the fact that these certain books are to be banned to keep their kids from being exposed to some of the ways of the world. Some of the concerns that these parents have are with usage of some derrogatory words or lanuguage not preferrred by some parents. The things that parents fail to realize is that by law, a librarian has the responsibility that they must uphold; including their responsibilty to the stocking of books on their shelves. I would take the side of the librarian because their position would be worthless because their rights would be useless, and their job would
People are thinking to ban books which I think is really bad. Everywhere and everyday people are saying that some books need to be banned because some use the “n” liberally word in a different meaning and if you erase the book well you are kind of erasing history.
Imagine one person controlling everything in your life. Even they decide what you are allowed to read, write, or watch. No one’s opinion would matter anymore, because if one person doesn't like a certain thing, they completely ban it, and it basically never exists again. One’s person decision to ban a book, could be taken a completely different way, on how parents, librarians, or even I feel about it.
There could be multiple reasons why certain books are banned. Some of the reasons may include profanity, racism, sexual content, etc. It is obvious that a book like Fifty Shades of Grey is not allowed in school, but there are parents out there who will ban books such as The Great Gatsby, Bridge to Terabithia. These kinds of books could lead the children to do horrific acts based on learning from these books. However, it could be good to have these horrific content to educate children about the various negative things that occur in this world. These banned books are meant to educate students, although the books can’t educate when there are parents are preventing them. The parents do have the right to stop their child from reading the inappropriate books, but it’s just unnecessary since the schools allow these books to be taught to the students.
One reason why people in authority shouldn’t ban books is because parents can control what their child can or cannot read. Parents can put limits on what their child reads. For example, they can read the book before their child and the parents can decide if the child should be allowed to read it. Banning books also violates the 1st Amendment because it violates their freedom of speech. Local school boards are removing books from the libraries because they disagree with the ideas presented in the book.
Banning books and only allowing children to know specific information, instead of them learning about everything, they are only learning certain topics and that is harmful to society because not everyone knows all of the dangers of hiding certain things from themselves and others. In Source C, “Judy Blume” discusses with a News Reporter, that she believes that “her commitment to children’s intellectual freedom and their right to read a variety of books,” (West) is a good thing because she does not want her books to be banned from children’s imagination and their interest of knowledge. She also supports the idea of her books, not being banned because in her books, she put good knowledge and facts. If society takes that away, then our future generations are not going to be as intelligent r
In the future, books in libraries and schools should be judged on the story in it and not just the content. New ideas are needed to develop different points of view and learn about the world. Books should not be banned because it shows disrespect to the rights of the children and restricts their ability to learn new
Banning books does not help anyone; banning a book in a library makes it more difficult for other people to read the book if they can not afford to buy the book. The definition of a banned book is a work that contains material that has been deemed inappropriate, offensive, or dangerous by certain people or organizations. The people that usually challenge the books are parents of children (Shumaker). An example of banned books would be the Harry Potter series. Parents wanted to ban the books because the books contains sorcery throughout the whole book.
Books should not be banned because they are a teaching tool to our younger and older generations. In the text, “I Am Very Real”, Kurt Vonnegut states,” You should also resolve to expose your children to all sorts of opinions and information, in order that they will be better equipped to make decisions and to survive.” Without knowing the information and opinions of others, one cannot make accurate decisions for life. History repeats itself and will continue to repeat itself unless there is information available to the public explaining what happened in the past. Knowing what has wrongly happened in the past teaches our generation what not to do. On the other hand, books are banned because of objectionable content. But, this objectionable content is necessary to teach our children about all the
Books hold ideologies, diverse ideals, and come from facts as well as the imagination. Books are the ultimate freedom of expression for the author and the reader. One of the most valued rights, in America, is the freedom of expression. This freedom is granted by the bill of rights which is the first amendment to the U.S. constitution. Book banning violates this right; therefore book banning should be illegal in America. There are many reasons people want certain books banned. There are many examples of banned books. The Supreme Court case, Board of Education V. Pico was about book banning and upheld this right.
The novel does not provide any clear explanation of why books are banned. It is suggested instead that a combination of many factors could create this situation. These factors can be separated into two general groups: factors that make people hostile to the idea of books and factors that lead people to a general lack of interest in reading in general.
Why would you ban a book? It’s just gonna make the book more popular! On the news you will most likely see this stuff happening EVERYDAY, so there is really nothing you can do about it. When you hear that something got banned, wouldn't you wanna read it to see what the big deal is about it? “Krueger though that John green was trying to show/tell what it was like for a 16 year old to die.. I'm only a highschool student that doesn't like to read, but I think this choice is absurd to ban a book like TFIOS! Making it pointless to ban a book. A person's decision can affect another person because if someone wants to ban a book, then another person will want to do that too. They will think: “Oh, if she or he thinks it's bad, then it's probably bad”
Before Jennifer’s presentation, I did not know much about banned and challenged books. I am extremely happy that we got to listen to Jennifer talk about the things that she did. I learned a lot of new things such as what a challenged book is, and what a banned book is. Challenged books are when someone is trying to remove or restrict materials in the library. Banned books are simply the removing of that book off the shelf. The most interesting thing that I learned was that parents are the most frequent people who challenge books.
