Position Paper: Should breast milk be sold?
Breast milk is something that someone needs to think about before having a newborn. Multiple problems can occur in the world to newborn babies if mothers continue to buy breast milk. Breast milk should not be sold because risky viruses and diseases could be in the milk if untreated, mothers who need the milk might not be able to pay for it, and someone could say what they are selling is breast milk but it is not. Though mothers may need breast milk for their newborns right away, they may be poisoning their baby with bad milk if being sold from an unknown person. “But the FDA has expressed concern about milk-trading websites, warning consumers that the milk offered there carries an increased risk of contamination by drugs or disease, including HIV” (qtd. in “Brown”). If mothers get the milk they want to buy tested by professionals, it would be safer for the baby. The mother providing someone else with the milk may be involved with drugs or have some type of sickness, leading to the breast milk very unhealthy to the newborn. Donating breast milk would be more helpful to those who need it. Some mothers that need the milk the most may not be able to afford it because of the prices. “Another scenario might be babies whose mothers have trouble nursing but couldn’t tolerate infant formula- and selling milk as opposed to donating it doesn’t seem right to some” (qtd. In “Beyer”). Someone who really needs the breast milk may be struggling with money and not able to pay for it. Breast milk needs to be opened for women who need it for their own need. There could be money issues in a family and they are struggling to supply their baby with milk, they deserve to get it for
