The person that I am evaluating is Riley Miars. Riley’s speech covered the controversial debate of Why College Athletes Deserve to be Paid. From my understanding, this has been a controversial topic within the sport world. There have been many sports figures who have supporting this idea, and there have been many people against this idea. Student athletes believe that they should be paid due to the fact that the schools make billions of dollars off free labor. Schools hate this idea because their main argument is that most student athletes obtain a free education, which cost thousands of dollars. There are numerous sources that cover this controversial topic, which Riley was able to use to form his speech in favor of college athletes being paid for the efforts.
During the speech, Riley was able to identify all his key sources. Riley was able to discuss the long-lasting health effects, the reasons why student athletes should be paid, and the monies involved within college sports. Due to the speech cover key points, I was persuaded that college athletes

A school athlete’s scholarship cost a fraction what schools make their student athletes. Student athletes often complain about barely having enough money for food, school supplies, and transportation. Another key reason why I was persuaded by Riley’s speech was because college athletes spend the majority of their time at practice, rather than studying for their classes. A second reasons why I was persuaded was the fact that college athletes out their own health at risk. Some school athletes receive lifechanging injuries, which change their life forever. If schools were genuine about the scholarships they issue to the student athlete, then they should ensure all college athletes receive a decent education that leads to
The opponents of paying athletes also believe that paying student-athletes will force schools to cut certain programs, or the schools won’t even be able to pay at all. Most people in our world have to pay for college, while these few and rare individuals get to go to expensive places for free. “These athletes… full tuition paid for, or at least significantly discounted. Billions are given to athletes each year… the average athletic scholarship at a school actually exceeds the school’s tuition…. consider Ohio State…
Since education is so important today and so expensive, the scholarships that the NCAA allows schools to award to student athletes acts as money and compensation. Without scholarships, attending such schools could be impossible. In a report by Stephen Ross, an economist and research professor at Georgetown University, he writes that by the year 2000 college graduates were earning eighty percent more than high school graduates who did not go to college (Ross). Not only does college help one pursue an education but it helps one find a job and make money to help support themselves throughout life. If colleges did not offer athletic scholarships then many individuals would have lost out on an opportunity to improve themselves by going to college and receiving a higher education. Scholarships help bridge the gap between dreams and reality by allowing students to significantly reduce the financial burden that attending a college/university can have on a person or family. The American Dream can become a reality, all the hard work and sacrifices become worth it because through education anything is possible. However this notion that scholarships are the solution to the problem of paying student athletes is not well thought out. Firstly, scholarships cost the NCAA nothing. Secondly, scholarships fail to address the fact that the NCAA makes millions off the student athletes. Also, most student
I have decided to research whether a collegiate athlete should be compensated for perform for his or her respective college or university. It is a highly controversial topic within my field of study because of the different views athletic authorities, administrators, athletes, alumni and future graduates have on the subject. According to "Pay to Play: Should College Athletes be Paid?", collegiate student-athletes may spend more than 40 hours a week practicing, leaving little time to keep up with academic commitments (Birkenes 4-5). Majority of their time is spent on the field or hard wood, making
College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes
One of the most controversial subjects we as individuals hear about this day in age is whether or not college athletes deserve to be paid. Many people argue that these athletes do intact, deserve to be paid for their time and hard work. NCAA athletes create a name for themselves by playing and performing well on their college teams. The better these athletes perform, the more publicity the school revives. This then leads to higher ticket sales and stores around campus selling jerseys and other clothing items with athletes names and numbers on the back. NCAA schools have become comfortable with using athletes’ names to bring in a revenue for the school, and yet the athletes never see any of that money. On the other hand, many people believe that these athletes do not deserve, nor should they expect to receive payment in return. They believe that these scholarships and the education are payment in itself. Some even bring up the question on if it is affordable or even realistic to pay college athletes.
Whether or not student-athletes should be paid has been a hotly debated topic since the 1900s. College athletes spend just as much time, if not more time, practicing and devoting time and energy to sports as they do academics. For this, many athletes are rewarded with scholarship money. However, many people believe it is not enough. Should we pay student-athletes a slice of the wealth or is a full-ride scholarship enough? (Business Insider). What if the athlete gets injured? Where does the money come out of to support each athlete’s salary? The huge amount of money being generated from college sports has led some people to think that the athletes are entitled to some of that revenue. While, some think that student-athletes should be paid, others disagree for various reasons.
Most people argue against the ability for athletes to be paid, because they get scholarships to pay for most of the college stay. The reason I can argue against is because I can see from an athlete’s point of view; where nobody really understands how hard it is to be part in extra curricular activities, and maintain stability in academics and out of school living. When you take part in sports, your coach expects you to be there for the team making yourself the best you can be, full-time. This isn’t only expected in sports, but it is also expected in academics, with hardly any respite. I feel that in certain ways, paying for the ones working hard to stay stable should have some help by being paid for their hard
There have been many debates about whether or not college athletes should or should not be compensated by their schools for their services. The way it should be is that they should not be compensated for their works for various reasons concerning the schools they play for. Coming from a college athlete, compensation for us will only bring trouble for the schools we play for. From many other athletes’ points of view, they want payment for their own benefits or needs, but they don't see how it will affect the schools they attend. Colleges should not be entitled to providing compensation for their student athletes because it will hurt the colleges financially.
While people may have the opinion that college athletes should be paid, the debate for
My whole speech is about unraveling this topic with my three points which cover the reasons why I think that college athletes should not be paid. My first point is that if
College sports can determine a person’s lifestyle. Determines whether or not they can go pro or get a job. Paying athletes can give them a better sense of money. They can learn how to save their money up, learn how to spend it correctly, and a great sense of financial awareness. The problem is that many
The ugly truth behind the money machine that is college sports is that, every year, college athletes are deceived by the institutions the compete for into making them millions of dollars, with relatively little in return. Athletes are said to be given a chance to attend college and to attain a free college degree. However, research has shown that this is not completely true for two reasons. For one, the student athlete will spend most of their time in preparation for competition. Secondly, what education the student athlete does receive hardly serves them outside of maintaining eligibility just so
In her article she emphasizes the fact that paying college athletes would be completely unfair to other students that attend school. She argues that the student athletes have almost everything provided for them in college and how regular students don’t have some of the opportunities that they do. She also goes on to say that the scholarship that the school provides for their athletes is payment enough, whether it is a full or partial scholarship. She also hints on the fact that being broke and having no money is all a part of the “college experience” and that everybody is struggling to make ends meet and that it everybody is working hard to make money and that a majority of the people who attend college cannot afford to go out and overindulge and spend money on the things that they want, so college athletes should not have this privilege either. Also, smaller colleges would not be able to shell out money like larger colleges could so a large school would be able to pay more for a player than a smaller college would, therefore putting the smaller college at a disadvantage.
It is an age old debate on whether a college athlete should be paid. It is a high school student 's dream to play sports at the collegiate level. Many people question why the NCAA, coaches, and administrators are allowed to earn large amounts of money while the student athlete’s hard work and efforts are limited to a scholarship. Others feel that is should be considered a privilege that a college athlete can earn a college degree while enjoying what they love, by playing collegiate sports. Student athletes should not receive payment because they are already receiving payment in the form of an expensive athletic scholarship and are also able to receive the new cost of attendance stipend to assist with further financial burdens.
Student athletes commonly go to school for one reason: their love for the sport they participate in. These student athletes get scholarships from large Division 1 schools, which means things such as schooling, board, and food will be paid for by the school so the student athletes do not have to pay for these benefits themselves (Patterson). If college athletes are to be paid, it will cause unfair compensation between players who are valued or played more than others. When student athletes are rewarded with a scholarship, they have nothing school related that they would need to pay for. This can lead them to blow all of their income on unnecessary or dangerous things such as drugs and alcohol which could get them removed from the team they
