Should College Athletes Get Paid?
Should college athletes be paid? This has been a controversial topic ever since college sports started. Many people argue that they should. Many people argue that they should not. College athletes should get paid because they work extremely hard playing their sport. The people that say they should be paid argue that the amount of time athletes dedicate is equivalent to a full-time job, and maybe even more. The people that say they should not get paid argue that college athletes get scholarships that are worth, if not worth more than getting paid as athletes.
Student athletes are the main reason why college sports exist. Even though it is a highly profitable area, the NCAA claims that they cannot afford to pay athletes that are involved in competitive college athletics. There are many reasons why people support college athletes getting paid. One tremendous and controversial reason is, what if the athlete gets injured and cannot live a normal life. This has been in-question many times during debates on college and university athletic departments. Imagine yourself as an injured college athlete and finding out that you have been injured so severely that you won’t be able to walk again or that you won’t be able to take care of yourself.
