Student debt. Most people who have gone to college have experienced this, all of which will say it is not a fun time. What’s that? Debt from college could be eliminated for athletes by just a little compensation for playing what they love? Even though a lot of athletes get scholarships, most of the time it does not even pay for all of the expenses. Let alone food and toiletries that definitely does not come with the scholarship. Because of all the money they bring in to colleges, their financial struggles, and devotion to the sport, college football players should get paid.

Getting scholarships for their athletic ability, but scholarships do not pay for food or living supplies, and sometimes not even everything academically. So if they come from poor families and households, how are they going to get enough money to pay for everything else that scholarships do not pay for. Getting a job would not work because they have to practice for their sport and also find time to study. Paying college football players could solve their financial issues. Student loans could fill in those payments that scholarships do not cover. Unfortunately some people do not qualify for loans from the bank. On the other hand, colleges can revoke scholarships without reason. How are the students going to further their education if their scholarships are revoked? Compensating players seems like the best option. If they do not get paid, then coaches get huge paychecks. Nick Saban, college football coach for Alabama, will make approximately $11,125,000 to coach the Crimson Tide this spring. In spite of scholarships, compensating college football players could help with financial issues. The average college football player devotes 43.3 hours per week on practicing or playing. That is 3.3 hours more than the average american worker. It is their job, and they should get paid for it. Reggie Bush claimed in an article with Business Outsider, “They're putting their
Even though college athletes aren’t able to receive any type of monetary compensation they receive thousands of dollars in scholarships
College athletes don’t have some huge debt waiting for them after college. I’m sure any of these people would have been willing to represent their school by playing a sport without any complaints about not being paid if it took away their debt. (College athletes shouldn’t be paid by Kieran McCauley). In his article Shouts From The Stands: Why The NCAA Shouldn't Pay Athletes, Davis Malone said, “The chances of making a professional sports team is so unlikely that athletes should appreciate and take advantage of the free education and services they are offered.” Malone also stated, “Degrees are more valuable
It is true that their tuition, books, and housing is cover in there scholarships. Such of a scholarship may seem like a lot of money, but it only covers the basics such as thousands of dollars in mysterious university fees, tuition, housing, a meal-plan and expensive textbooks. If an athlete comes from a low income family or household, they only get a few hundred dollars for other miscellaneous scholarships such as a Pell grant. Pell Grants allow athletes to buy chicken soup instead of chicken-flavored ramen noodles. Hall of fame legend Abdul-Jabbar stated “Despite the hours I put in every day, practicing, learning plays, and traveling around the country to play games, and despite the millions of dollars our team generated for UCLA—both in cash and in recruiting students to attend the university—I was always too broke to do much but study, practice, and play,” It is sad that athletes are not able to enjoy themselves in school, it’s hard to go out and have a great time without
Who would be responsible for paying the students in this case? And what system will be used; do athletes with better performance get more pay than other members of the team? These things and a lot more only would result to many complexities, and thus, paying college athletes might indeed just deviate the students from what they went to their respective institutions in the first place, that is, to get a degree, not to gain a salary.” (http://www.youniversitytv.com/college-tips/pros-cons-paying-college-athletes/) There has been numerous college athletes that said they want to paid.
Professor Rick Burton a sports management professor at Syracuse University in New York Says “Many student athletes are already compensated.” He Continues on to say, "Many top players receive tuition, books, tutoring, housing, meals, clothing, elite coaching, medical care, travel expenses, and career counseling," now there are thousands of students going to university for different reasons. The main reason being an education. So should college athletes get free college tuition and a salary? While a biology major is barely scraping by and might have to drop out because university fees are simply too
People think that these athletes should not be paid and should only receive scholarships. If you really think about it though, giving a student a scholarship is paying them. The university is giving the athlete a portion or the whole price of tuition just to attend and play for them. That is paying the athlete because the athlete doesn’t have to pay for school whereas some who just chooses to go there and pay. The athlete has earned their spot by working hard and the university is rewarding them by paying for there
They have no other means to compensate for this need since sports practices take up all of their time after their academic responsibilities. Paying college students, a little extra, would actually go a long way, especially for the ones belonging to a family with low income, which for the most part they are a part of. However, paying student athletes could, in fact, ruin the important role of the universities, which obviously is to offer a good education. The skills and education that theses athletes receive are an education of a lifetime and the education that they receive in college would not even come close to the amount they would receive if they were paid. The other thing I would like to mention is how much these players are bringing into the school and the school officials make possibly millions off of their names without the players not seeing a cent out of it except a full ride scholarship but still have nights where they are broke like every other student with no money for food.
When bringing in that much money in giving the athletes 2,000 to 5,000 does not sound like a unreasonable request. There was a documentary called “Broke” and it was about college football players now
Gaining publicity can get the athlete to be known. At a young age student should work to get scholarships since it would be easier for them in college and they will gain many
Only a select few student athletes are skilled and competitive enough to entertain a large audience of fans. Most people would rather spend their money watching professional athletes over amateurs. Most college athletes can’t afford to attend college so they should be grateful and gladly accept the benefits they are already rewarded. “Another major argument is that athletes do receive compensation for their work in the form of full scholarships worth up to $60,000 a year. Without this benefit, some athletes could not afford college. Leaving college without student loan debt relieves athletes of a major burden” ("Compensation for College Athletes" 2). People are acting like there and no other students in other programs that work just as hard as student athletes that don’t get paid. If you pay college athletes other school programs would start to cause problems and demand
Some families are not able to afford the cost of college because other than major things such as tuition, and dept there are also minor things athletic college students have to pay for such as class books. Other than spending money on classes, athletes have to purchase other equipment such as team shoes, protection, head ware, and anything else pertaining to that sport. Even with a full time job paying for college can be a pain and being that the actual athlete will not be able to work, it makes things even more
I strongly believe that college athletes shouldn’t get paid because a scholarship to a college to play for their team and a free education is enough payment. Student-athletes with full-ride scholarships don’t have to worry about student loans or any other debts they would have to pay back for attending that college.
However, many if not most of those students, will not be able to come up with the money to pay for college until years later, when they have their own jobs and can make their own money. Even with their jobs, however, they still find themselves under the stress of thousands of dollars of debt. Students find themselves struggling throughout the year, finding ways to balance sports, education, and a social life. Students who feel prepared enough to tackle a sport their very first year of college often find themselves overwhelmed, thinking about all of the bills that they are leaving their parents at home to pay the price for. While families drown in debt because of the money that they owe in tuition, student loans, books, and meals, the coaches of college athletics are floating comfortably in the money that they receive for doing nothing but giving kids guidance that they already received in high school. These coaches are most likely not lifting one finger; they are hoping for a win from their team, and they are hoping for a bigger paycheck. However, coaches would not have even half of the career that they do without their student-athletes. Coaches would have no one to coach if there weren’t families willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars that they don’t have on their kids and the sport(s) that they have a passion to play. Coaches owe
Student athletes commonly go to school for one reason: their love for the sport they participate in. These student athletes get scholarships from large Division 1 schools, which means things such as schooling, board, and food will be paid for by the school so the student athletes do not have to pay for these benefits themselves (Patterson). If college athletes are to be paid, it will cause unfair compensation between players who are valued or played more than others. When student athletes are rewarded with a scholarship, they have nothing school related that they would need to pay for. This can lead them to blow all of their income on unnecessary or dangerous things such as drugs and alcohol which could get them removed from the team they
Opponents against paying student-athletes say that they should not be paid because through scholarships, they're already being paid. Yes, a scholarship is a form of payment. A scholarship is nice, but it is not enough. A scholarship will not pay the bills. Moreover, unlike ordinary students without athletics, student-athletes must also many times care for families and spouses. Actually, approximately 24% of student athletes are married, and of that 24%, about 62% have children. Of the students without their own spouses or children, many must care for parents and siblings.
