Weak moral character, otherwise known as someone who does not put others before himself and lives without morality in situations, lacks two particular traits. These traits are moral vision, which would allow people to see the ethical dilemmas that our actions present and strength of will, which would allow an individual to act the way he chooses rather than what he inherently wants. This is deciding to become a certain person and sticking to it.

Character is defined as one’s moral qualities. I have very high expectations for my character, and I hold myself to them. Every time a person isn't the nicest to me or someone else, I remind myself not to stoop to their level. I tell myself, “Treat others how you would want to be treated.” I will always treat myself and everyone around me with respect, courtesy, and kindness.

Someone once said, “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” Kindness is an example of a good character trait to have, but unlike kindness, some traits are not so good. Character traits are what describes a character; they shape and define each character, making them unique. Because of her numerous traits, Mary Moloney is a round character in “Lamb to the Slaughter.”

Ethics and integrity are important to a police chief or county sheriff in a number of ways. First, ethics and integrity assist a police chief or a county sheriff to recruit the best officers who can work in their departments. It is only through application of the principles of ethics and integrity that a police chief or a county sheriff can identify these qualities in the potential applicants, and use them in the recruitment process. Second, ethics and integrity are important to a police chief or a county sheriff because these qualities help them to set the professional standards under which the recruited officers should work. Being the highest ranking officers in the department, a police chief or a county sheriff has all the responsibilities to define working standards for all other officers serving in their departments.

The world is full of crime and hate. When you think of criminal, an image pops in your head of someone wearing bland clothing with a mask or a thug with gang tattoos. The Criminal Justice System is just like every other agency or corporation ever. Police integrity and ethics are fundamental to effective policing and helps with building trust within communities. Sound conduct by police improves the community interactions, enhances communication, and promotes shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder. (USDOJ, 2014) Restoring ethics starts from the beginning, and that is too look harder into the employees or officers that you are going to hire. The thing is that it is much harder than it sounds. People can change or lie on their interviews. So you will never be able to fully prevent every person who might break ethical codes from entering into law enforcement. What you need to do first is let all new officers be aware of what they are getting themselves into.

Nowhere is ethical behavior more important than the administration of criminal justice. Lack of ethical behavior undermines the purpose of the criminal justice system. The cost of unethical behavior will be the downfall of the criminal justice system and only by gaining a true understanding of what ethical behavior is and how to maintain it will the system continue to flourish. While the ethical standard individuals develop through the years are important; utilizing critical thinking skills ensuring ethical standards stay in place.

Character is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual, though morality is subjective, in today’s society it is predominantly agreed upon that someone who is of good character has certain qualities that contribute to their decision making, trustworthiness, and intelligence. On March 23, 2006, a woman named Annie Smith was arrested and sentenced to death for killing her eighteen-year-old son James Smith. I concur with chapter one that agents of the criminal justice system should be held to a higher moral standard. In the view of the discretionary nature of the work and the power invested in agents of the system, it is necessary for them to be held to a higher standard than the average citizen. The agents are here to protect and serve the community moreover required to obtain a higher ethical standard than the norm. Laws should not be considered without some type of ethics, for a law to be passed, there has to be a decision about right or wrong.
