Your alarm goes off on Monday morning and you hit snooze or so you thought. You finally wake up and you see it’s 7:10 and school starts at 7:35. Are you going to grab the first set of clothes that you see or are you going to take time to pick out your clothes? I would just grab the first set of clothes I see. But when you get to school you get called into the office because your outfit because you can see a little bit of your shoulder. Are the school dress code too strict in schools? Should schools have dress codes, but not as strict as they are now. Many schools have different dress codes some are strict and some are not. Many schools have a policy that short’s should be fingertips links or shirt’s without shelves should be three finger long.
The prominent reason behind the various overdone school rules regarding dress is the loose power that administrators have been given. They have been “reserve[d] the right to determine if a clothing item or accessory is appropriate for school” (Carroll High School Student Handbook 2010-2011 18). The officials at school are using their own personal opinions to judge the students’ dress. Since styles change as time goes on, the generation in control and the
School dress codes are believed to be to strict today, and that they need to be changed. These rules on what to wear and what not to wear are applied mainly because shorts and tank tops are seen as a distraction to other students in the classroom. Shorts that show too
To some, arguing over student dress code seems trivial and useless. To others, it goes deeper than that. Dress code might seem like the typical “first world problem”, but to the average high school student, gaining the freedom ‘no dress code’ grants is incredible. The fact of the matter is, the rigid enforcement of student dress code has gone too far in today 's society and dehumanizes us as citizens. Although school dress code attempts to promote modesty and protection, it also reinforces gender inequality, smothers individualism, is unconstitutional, and should not be enforced in public schools.
Dress codes have some kind of restriction on every single item of clothing, among other things, a girl can put on. Shorts and skirts have to be a certain length—normally mid-thigh or knee length. Tops are required to have a certain size strap or sleeve, and bra straps are not allowed to be seen (God forbid a teenage girl wear a bra to school and her strap is visible). No shirts that reveal midriffs are allowed either. Sometimes the amount of how much a girl’s back is showing is restricted, too. Leggings and yoga pants cannot be worn unless the shirt is long enough where the girl’s fingers touch the shirt fabric, and in some schools they are banned completely. One has to control the amount of cleavage visible, which can prove very difficult for any girl, especially those that
All schools have certain dress codes that students need to follow. If the school is selling uniforms, they can make all the clothes the right lengths and styles. Schools will be able to know instantly if the children’s clothes follow the dress code if the kids wear uniforms. If a school’s dress code states that children cannot wear shorts that are more than two inches above the knee, the school can have the uniforms sized that they will never be more than two inches over the knee. The same applies with shirts, pants, sweaters, etcetera. Some might argue that students will want to be able to wear hats and accessories for fun sometimes- I see no problem in this! Schools could have certain days that kids can wear regular clothes instead of uniforms. These days can be holidays, such as
Others may argue that school dress codes are set not only to keep students from wearing clothes that show too much skin, but also to restrict them from showing off gang or drug paraphernalia. However, these rules do not need to be totally diminished, but modified to be made more reasonable. There is a line between wearing something that is provocative and wearing something that is your style. For example, wearing extremely short shorts would be a reasonable restriction, but showing something like your shoulders or back is not distracting. Students have the right to dress they way they choose and schools do not have the ability to take that away from them, to a certain
You're in English class. The teacher asks a question to the whole class, and you raise your hand. Then your shirt goes up. Instead of getting a smile from your teacher for getting the answer correct, you get a one-way trip to the main office. Well, this is what happens to so many girls at school every day. The dress code Brings girls self-esteem down, and you can miss So Many hours of class time.
Lately, being dress coded has led to kids being sent home or, kids having to change into their PE clothes. Has anyone else ever noticed how dress codes are more targeted towards girls or, limit their freedom of expression? Or, how teachers and staff label girls as distractions? The dress code implies that boys can't stop themselves from looking at girls' bodies, so, it's the girls' fault when boys can't pay attention in math. It's the girls who are taken out of class to change their clothes.
“School officials have a responsibility to provide a safe, secure, and productive learning environment.” Therefore, schools have dress codes because the safety of students is very important. A teacher’s number one priority is their student’s safety and to have a good learning environment. All students should have the same right to their education. Is the clothing the students wear distracting others from learning? It is distracting to others, but that is not the only reason why schools have dress codes. Schools also have dress codes because it helps prevent students from being bullied based on their clothing, especially if they wear something offensive or inappropriate. It also helps them prepare for professional environments as adults in the workplace.
Even though dress code may be a small problem the world is facing, it could have a big impact on daily lives. For example, Ph. D Lori Thomas, said this according to the dress code of schools all over, “If schools want a dress code so badly, have them wear uniforms, if schools do not wear uniforms, the kids decide.” This quote is explaining, when schools have
Leggings, crop tops, and short shorts, oh my! From prom dresses to everyday dress wear, females are taught to be ashamed of and hide their bodies. Schools have established different ways to do this to them. In or out of school, these girls are classified as many different things: sluts, whores, or skanks. All because they are confident in their body or want to be comfortable.
In 2015 a female student Emma at Columbia University, was raped on her first day of 7her sophomore year by a classmate of hers. When the incident happened, she did not report it at first. Until she met two other women at school who were also raped by the same classmate as her. They all went to court and all three cases were dismissed because they were treated as single case's. Seven months after she reported the rape incident her hearing took place. The investor in her case did not take down important information like the position she was raped which was anal. Her hearing panelist were not even trained, one woman kept asking how was it possible for anal rape to happen. Columbia did not find her rapist responsible because there was not enough
There are many rules that need to change, but I think the most important thing is that all teachers and staff are in agreement over what is ‘appropriate’ and what is ‘not appropriate’. Most teachers are very lenient with rips in jeans and skirts being a not too short, but every once in awhile you have one teacher that is extremely strict and will call out everything that goes against the dress code. I am not saying that we should just make the teachers be more strict, but that the dress code is made more tolerant of students and their clothes and the teachers should still enforce the few reasonable rules there are. Also I think that the ripped jeans rule in particular should change. There is another rule at most schools about how short a dress or skirt can be, but if someone is wearing jeans with rips in the knees, it is not allowed.
An important issue in current society is whether there should be a dress code in schools. For example, there are many people that are for or against having uniforms in school. My opinion is that even when there are many reasons why people argue for dress codes or uniforms, they should not be implemented just because teachers feel that girls’ clothes are too distracting for boys. For example, a girl was sent home because her outfit was showing her collar bone.
Anytime there is a complaint at the Mayor’s office, it is usually about the dress code. The law is that there needs to be a dress code, but there is a way to fix that. Some children buy a cute outfit, but can never wear it because it is against the dress code. Parent are also having a hard time with this, it is hard for the parents to choose their child’s clothes. There had been a plan that is we get fifty signatures on a petition, then there will be two vans, with five adults in each van, and head off the the SCBOE office.
