Should Euthanasia Be Illegal In The Giver

Euthanasia is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in a coma. This practice is illegal in most countries, but why? Euthanasia is also known as “assisted suicide”, and has caused a lot of controversy throughout the world. The question is, should it be legal? I believe that it should. Euthanasia is used mainly for pets being “put down” when they are sick or elderly, but this is not available to humans. Euthanasia should be available to humans, but only under certain guidelines and all cases should be investigated into before the person is euthanised.

They have no knowledge about the procedure and what there is to come after. When they are released, to most of the community’s knowledge they are being brought “elsewhere”, as if they are still alive and being brought to another community or place. Later in the book, Jonas, who is the receiver, realizes that release is assisted suicide, well, really he realizes it is death and becomes furious with life in the community and how the people in the community have little to no knowledge about history as well as the world that they live in. In this book, euthanasia is seen as a bad thing, and in those circumstances, I believe the same thing. Really, only the elderly have a choice in this circumstance. Euthanasia is already legal in the Netherlands, India, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, and Colombia. Euthanasia is legal in the U.S. states of Vermont, Oregon, Washington, California, and Montana. In Belgium, both the patient and the doctor decide whether it is best, and I believe that the U.S. should take a similar approach, where the patient and the doctor should really communicate.
