Anyone and even probably everyone have felt the overwhelming stress of too much homework in high school. I know I have myself. It’s something no one wants to deal with. That’s why I think teachers should have a limit on the amount of homework they should be able to hand out. Less homework would help the student’s mental health from relieving a lot of stress from them, and also help them in the long run with their grades. Plus it would also benefit the teachers by giving them less papers to grade.
One reason I maintain this position is that too much homework causes an extreme amount of stress on the students’ that shouldn’t be added to the original amount they have from their teenage hormones. If the average high school student has homework

In fact, I know a lot of students myself who actually do not learn the new material by doing homework. Surely, before I explain my reasoning, I know people think that the homework actually helps the student achieve higher grades and consume the lesson learned that day. In addition, some may even say that it makes them more confused about the new lesson. These students may need in class experience to learn what they have been taught that day to fully grasp it. For example, if a teacher runs out of time teaching the class, but assigns the homework, some students may struggle that night and not fully understand the assigned work given to them. They might even get more confused than they originally were because they do not have a professional teacher showing them how to do the math problems, or correctly write the essay, or even remember the scientific formulas for their physics class. This then can actually lead to students grades dropping because they bombed the homework assignment. A report done by the Daily Mail has words from the National Foundation for Educational Research saying that “The best exam and coursework results come from pupils who work a sensible and ‘moderate’ amount”. This is basically stating that if students were given a sensible amount of homework grades would actually improve. Surely, this all can be fixed if less or no homework was given to students at
Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between the arguments for more or less homework are remarkable. It is important to see both the positive and negative viewpoints, because homework is something that every student will have to deal with. It can be stressful with extracurricular activities and at some points may seem useless. However, homework is beneficial for understanding the material, and keeping kids out of trouble. Overall, I believe that even though homework may be excessive at some points, it can be extremely beneficial for the future.
Although the homework is related to the schoolwork it is not going to help the students improve because if there is no teacher to help you if you don't understand. If students have after school academic events such as spelling bees, math debates,or quiz bowls they can't make it because of all of the homework. So this is can be to much to handle for them.
"As the new school year begins, administrators, teachers, students and parents will once again face the battle over the value of homework." We should know that homework has great value, but the kind of homework that is given and the amount of homework that tends to be at the heart of the war. When we are given homework there's always a time that we get a large amount of homework that will take forever to finish. For students, lengthy homework tasks tends to frustrate them. This also creates problems for teachers when kids either can't or won't complete the task, thereby stopping the teacher's efforts to continue instruction the next day because he/she counted on homework completion. The teachers need to focus on giving the kids not a large
By not giving out homework, students will work harder in class and have better grades. Teachers have to understand that if students are tired from late nights, they wouldn't be able to work efficiently during the day. In addition, students would be much more excited to come to school because they know they wouldn't have to worry about getting any homework. In 2010, a survey was taken and it showed that about 70% of teen ages 11 to 17 get less than 8 hours of sleep per day due to the amount of homework they have to do (Logos). According to Alfie Kohen, students feel forced to do their homework, therefore they aren't learning as much as they should (Ethos). Students lose interest in the topic and do not benefit from what they’re learning. In China, a cry for change by a mother who lost her thirteen year old daughter who committed suicide due to her inability to achieve in math, the mother considers homework is a huge negative factor toward her deceased daughter's tragic ending along with the pressure of society (Pathos). Such a story should leave us wondering, how many more children need to suffer the silent epidemic of school stress. Statistics prove the leading cause for the majority of physical and emotional complaints leading up to diagnosis of depression in middle and high school due to the amount of
However, I still believe that the school should stop homework from being assigned and this is why. In source 3 "Down with Homework", it reads that studies show how homework isn't the cause of a higher grade score or academics of a student. This is because there is no support that homework helps with students of a small age.
Due to the fact, kids already go to school for eight hours and their brains shut down, causing health complications, too much homework can affect test scores, and kids have outside events, family, sports, church, and jobs to worry about. Some people agree with the idea of forcing teachers to have a limit on homework and some believe it has a beneficiary effect on students. But the negative effects are more damaging long-term.Than the benefits of it long-term. By limiting the amount of homework, given to students can increase the overall performance of the student and will leave them physically/mentally healthy. It will also give the children the chance to not miss out on the bonding time with family and friends. A happy child is a happy life for
People expect so much out of teenagers, especially the students who are involved in sports and maintain a job throughout the school year. They are expected to attend classes and their extracurricular activities; they have to make it to work on time, finish their homework, do their studies, and on top of that, get enough sleep at night. This is the kind of busy schedule students uphold in their week and it’s overwhelming for them. It causes stress and exhaustion, and people still expect them to do well and keep up with everything. Is this how we want students to feel all the time? Sure we want them to accomplish goals and be the best they can be, but one way to relieve some stress is less homework. When they come home from work or sports
Source A makes a point that children should use homework time to be with their families. Home life is an important factor when it comes to a child doing well in school, but children spend just as much time with their families as they do in school, not including weekends. Some people may not have as much time to do homework, but there should be at least an hour they can spare to do homework and improve their education. It should be no different than parents having to bring home paperwork from the office. That time could be spent on family too, but it’s seen as more important because it’s adult work. Children will learn that there are going to be times when sacrifices have to be made and they have to be responsible. If children stop getting homework and putting time and effort into it, then the real world will seem like a greater challenge to them because they won’t be prepared for actual work. Source B makes more neutral arguments by saying that homework is needed, but that it needs adjustments and changes in terms of what it entails, and how the student will benefit from the time they
Heavy loads of homework can be shown more as harmful than good, not only for students but also for their families. As shown in Source B it says, “It is the primary arena in which children, parents and schools interact on a daily basis” (Gill and Schossman). Which I can totally disagree with from my experience, stating that every time I come from school to home, I always have to go straight to my room, turn my computer on, and either work on essays or have to search up problems for my algebra assignments, or just information for any class in general, which takes up a whole day of my life. Another reason is it is very time consuming! These homeworks are always getting in my way of either having activities after school or just time to spend with my family, which I hardly ever have a chance to do because of all the work I have, and might I also state that my mom is always worrying about my health since I usually don’t have time to eat too, also she is always asking me if I have time to read the bible with my siblings and father, which I automatically have to state I can’t because again of all this work. Another statement I have is how homework is mainly useless to our education, grabbing information from Source F, “Kids who wouldn’t dream of cheating on a test or copying a research paper think nothing of copying homework” (Chaika). Since doing homework is just such a waste for us we usually just copy it either from other people or from the internet, and since math class usually just gives a packet about what is going to be on the quiz, we end up using that to study which ends up being more helpful for the upcoming test rather than doing
When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
In many American households, homework is the main cause of stress. Some people think that America is not so well and adding more homework will fix that problem. A study by Indiana University found that students who do more homework tend to get higher scores on standardized tests” (“Do Kids Need Homework?”). “Plus, part of growing up is learning to balance outside activities and the demands of schoolwork” (“Should Parents Help Kids With Homework?). Teachers have their reasons as well. “Teachers say homework is important in the learning process and can help kids develop study and organizational skills. They say kids need to practice what they've learned in school so that the material sticks in their brain” (Strauss). “Having too much homework
If you’re a student you know the stress that runs through you all day, even after school ends. Yes, the learning part of the day is done but there’s still all homework that needs to be finished. As soon as you step foot inside your house, it’s time to decide whether to start studying for the science test or finish the history project. Then you would think to yourself and say; neither because you still have the stack of math homework laying on your bed. Nowadays students get so much homework that they are usually up and losing sleep in order to complete it. On an average, a student should not spend more than 60 minutes on homework per day, but if each teacher assigns homework which exceeds the time limit it adds to the workload. Due to a lack
Although homework may be beneficial to some students, I think it doesn’t help with our education and needs to stop. To begin, is homework necessary? Australia did a study on homework inflicting kids’ learning. It wasn’t helpful for students in grades below 11th and 12th, yet it was beneficial towards upperclassmen in high school. A british study showed homework being beneficial to all students. Homework every night for 2-3 hours helped in english, math and science. Secondly, other than Britain, there is no evidence to demonstrate that homework is beneficial to students below the high school age. More homework isn’t correlated with children in elementary school. The only thing that shows up less positive attitude
The majority of students have, at one point or another, wished for less homework. For some student’s homework is not a big issue but for other students it can take hours and even days to do all their homework. That wasted time could be used for enjoyment or learning life skills instead of homework. Nine in ten high school students reported feeling stressed about homework (Galloway 4). So, should students get less homework? Yes, students should receive less homework because it improves their well-being by reducing stress and its impacts on health, increasing leisure time, and showing that homework does not affect grades significantly.
Students, parents, teachers, administrators and other interested parties all seem to have strong and different feelings towards homework. Students complain that they have too much homework to complete outside of the hours they already attended classes. Students feel that they have personal lives to live and blow off homework while some parents and teachers believe that homework is the key to passing classes and preparation for college. This leads to teachers feeling pressured to push their students to succeed and this can easily get carried away. Parents and school systems still often discuss the topic of homework today. Should homework in school systems be stopped?
