Nearly 100 million people in the united states have used marijuana. This past year government surveys have found that over 14 million Americans smoke marijuana despite the strict laws due to it being a schedule 1 drug. Behind alcohol and tobacco, marijuana is the third most accepted recreational drug. The United States of America’s current marijuana policies do not reflect the reality that almost one third of the entire country’s population supports the legalization of marijuana. This vast majority of support is due to marijuana’s numerous health and economic benefits. The legalization of marijuana can provide numerous health benefits for hundreds of in need patients, promote economic growth for community development, and is a safe alternative to other recreational drugs and alcohol. A closet look at the biological makeup of marijuana helps to better understand and evaluate its safety. Marijuana is the most commonly used name for the dried flowers and leaves of the plant Cannabis Sativa. The flowers of this plant contain concentrated amounts of psychoactive chemicals. These psychoactive chemicals are called cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids. The Cannabinoids makes up most of marijuana’s chemical makeup. Cannabinoids can be further broken down into two important ingredients. THC and CBD. THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana and one of the most responsible for its intoxicating effects.
